Burkholderia glumae and Burkholderia gladioli are bacterial pathogens that cause panicle blight in rice. High temperatures, especially at night, promote growth and virulence factor production in these bacteria, leading to severe disease outbreaks and yield losses. Sources of resistance have been identified but are still being studied. Seed treatment and quarantine are important control measures to reduce disease spread.

Suramérica ocupa el quinto lugar en el mundo en emisión de gas metano en arroz con 14,875 Gg CO2e yr‐1 y Colombia produce hasta
2,100 Gg CO2e yr‐1 (FAOSTAT, 2012). Según experimentos llevados a cabo en Filipinas por IRRI, la adopción del
sistema de moje y secado (Alternate Wetting and Drying, AWD+ por sus siglas en inglés) puede llegar a reducir
el uso del agua hasta en un 30%.
