The principal's letter discusses goals for the new year at P.S. 14, including improving student performance in reading, writing, and math. The goals are part of the school's Comprehensive Education Plan, which was designed by teachers and the School Leadership Team. The principal emphasizes partnerships between families, teachers, students, and consultants to achieve these ambitious academic targets together in the coming year.

And Now a Few Words From Our
Principal . .
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Happy New Year!
A new year represents an opportunity to begin anew with fresh
resolve and new commitments. We make resolutions and
proclamations. We make promises to be proactive, and we share
our dreams with friends and families. Something we know from time
and research is that the best way to follow through on a
commitment is to identify a rigorous goal and then make an action
plan to achieve it. We begin with the end in mind, and then plan
backwards to ensure that we stay on the path to reaching that goal.
As a faculty and as a School Leadership Team, we have designed our
Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP) for PS 14 The Fairview School
with big goals and ambitious action plans to achieve them. In short,
we plan to:
o Improve reading, writing and math performance across all
grades and subject areas
o Ensure that all teachers have highly effective teaching
practices
o Collaborate effectively with families to improve student
performance
Through partnerships with families, teachers, students, and
consultants we know that we can achieve these goals together.
May peace, joy, and love be with you all year long!
Sincerely,
Heather Benson
Principal, P-S- 14
2. Estimados Padres / Tutores,
iFeliz ano nuevo!
e n s e n a n z a a l t a m e n t e e fi c a c e s
Sinceramente,
H e a t h e r B e n s o n

10. Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful and relaxing break. Our P.S. 14 family wishes
you the very best for 2016! The New Year Is a perfect time to reflect on the past year and set
goals and make plans for the future. As the New Year begins, our students and teachers will
continue to focus on the Common Core Standards and their own Individual learning goals. We
appreciate the time you take at home to talk about your child's day and your encouragement
of them as they complete all their homework and home reading assignments. We are always
happy to offer suggestions for additional ways to support your child at home.
V .
The New Year Is a time of new beginnings and to make positive changes. One New Year resolution that
is fun to keep is to resolve to read with your family all yearlong. Make sure that you create a schedule
or a To-Do list by creating a "Lef s Read Together" calendar with your child. Try and develop a routine
and a specific time where you will get together with your child and read together for at least 25 minutes
every day. At the end of each week add up the number oiminutes you have read together and reward
you child with a special activity that they can choose to do with you over the weekend, or by letting
them stay up late, or taking time off from chores at home. Another resolution you can help your child
make is to have them choose nonfiction literature, which is an important genre that all grade levels
focus on throughout the entire school year. Nonfiction books prepare children to use reading skills in
real-life situations, as well as boosts knowledge about the world around us. Reading nonfiction
motivates children to read, especially when they choose books based on their interests. Kids love to
read about real people, places and events. After they read with you ask them some questions about
what they have just read and the information that they have just learned.

When we Think Win Win everybody can win! Students can problem solve when an issue
comes up with another person. We can think of others and what other people want and
not just what we want for ourselves. We can practice being kind to others and try to think
of ways to help everyone be happy at home as well as at school. Let's try and create
monthly goals that incorporate this helpful habit!
All of us here at P.S 14 wish you and your family a very happy
and healthy holiday season. Remember to read every day MM

Snow School Today
by Alice Knisley Matthias
We bundle ourselves for it's tinne to leave,
The wind whips as we wait for Mr. Steve.
He rounds the corner in the yellow bus,
Opening the door, he calls out for us,
"It's cold this morning! Get in! The heat's on!"
We wave our good-byes and then we are gone.
The trip this morning is a slippery ride.
Look out the window, the snow falls outside.
The street lights blurry and glowing like jewels.
Beneath all our boots, snow melts into pools.
Now safe at school we hear Mr. Steve say,
"Hurry inside now and keep warm today!"
