COUNSELLING DEFINITION
2. COUNSELLING
Counselling is a purposeful, private conversation arising from the intention
of one person to reflect on and resolve a problem in living, and the willingness
of another person to assist in that endeavour.
3. COUNSELLING
Counselling is the skilled and principled use of relationship to facilitate self-
Knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth and the optimal development of
personal resources.
4. COUNSELLING
The Overall aim is to provide an opportunity to work towards living more
satisfyingly and resourcefully.
5. COUNSELLING
Counselling relationships will vary according to need but may be concerned
with developmental issues, addressing and resolving specific problems, making
decisions, coping with crisis, developing personal insights and knowledge,
working through feelings of inner conflict or improving relationships with
others” – The British Association for Counselling.
6. COUNSELLING
“Counselling denotes a professional relationship between a trained counselor
and a client. This relationship is usually person-to person, although it may
sometimes involve more than two people.
7. COUNSELLING
It is designed to help clients to understand and clarify their views of their life
space, and to learn to reach their self-determined goals through meaningful,
well informed choices and through resolution of problems of an emotional or
interpersonal nature” – (Burks and Stefflre 1979: 14).
8. COUNSELLING
“Counselling is a way of enabling choice or change or of reducing confusion.
It does not involve giving advice or directing a client to take a particular course
of action.
Counsellors do no judge or exploit their clients in any way.
9. COUNSELLING
In the counseling sessions the client can explore various aspects of their life
and feelings, talking about them freely and openly in a way that is rarely
possible with friends or family.
10. COUNSELLING
Bottled up feeling such as anger, anxiety, grief and embarrassment can
become very intense and counseling offers an opportunity to explore them,
with the possibility of making them easier to understand.
11. COUNSELLING
Acceptance and respect for the client are essentials for a counselor and, as the
relationship develops, so too does trust between the counselor and client,
enabling the client to look at many aspect of their life, their relationships and
themselves which they may not have considered or been able to face before.
12. COUNSELLING
The Counsellor may help the client to look at the options open to them and
help them to decide the best for them” – (British Association for Counselling
and Psychotherapy)”.
