Rules for two of my
Game Shows
Juliana Silva
All Star Family Fortunes
In family fortunes, there is three rounds;
In single money, the teams are asked to guess the results of surveys. One person from each
family goes up to the podium and stands with one hand on the buzzer and one hand behind
their back. The host reads out the question, and the first person to push the buzzer, gets to
answer the question. If they get the top answer, they are allowed to ‘play or pass’ if they do
not, the other person is allowed to answer the question. If they answer with the top answer,
they are allowed to play or pass. The host then passes down the line of the controlling team,
asking for an answer from each. After each answer, the board reveals whether this answer
featured. If not, the family is given a strike. After three strikes, the family loses control of the
board. If a family manages to come up with all the survey answers before striking out, they win
the amount in pounds of the total number of people who had given the answers. If a family
strikes out, the opponent is given the chance to "steal" by coming up with an answer that may
be among those missing. Only the head family member may give the answer. If this answer is
present, this family wins the round and is said to have "stolen" the money, otherwise, the
family which played the board keeps the money.
In double money, gameplay is the same as the first rounds, but each answer is worth £2 for
each person who said it. The family who gets the most points go on to play "Big Money" for the
jackpot.
Big money is the final round, which only the winning family play. This involves two contestants
answering five questions that fit with those given by the "100 people surveyed”. The first
contestant answers the five questions within 15 seconds; then the second contestant (who has
been out of earshot) answers within 20 seconds (the extra time is available in case the
contestant repeats an answer already given). If they get 200 points or more from the ten
answers they win the top cash prize.
This game show has a linear structure as there is a set beginning, middle and end. It is also a
very closed game show as there is a clear winner and resolution.
It also connects to one of Barthes theories, which is an enigma, as the host asks a question,
and the answers are not immediately obvious to the audience and contestants.
As well as this it also includes binary opposites, where one team is against another team, and
one wins and the other loses.
Fort Boyard
The main plot of the game show is to steal back the bad guy’s money, but the rules
of the show vary from challenge to challenge.
The general aim is to get a key out of the room before the timer runs out, or you'll
be locked in.
You work in groups, but only one person participates in each challenge, while the
others wait outside the door giving advice and are able to watch what is going on
inside the room. However, if you are locked in, your team mates can get you out
later on in the game.
Once you have completed the challenges and got all the keys, you need a password
to open the door, meaning each of the remaining team mates have 2 minutes to do
one more challenge each, to get as many clues as they can figure out the password.
They then have to put themselves on the letters spelling out the password on a giant
alphabet on the floor.
If they get it correct, the gate to the money is opened, but they only have a certain
amount of time to get as much money as they can, and run out, before the door is
closed, and the tigers are let out of their cages.
Like All Star Family Fortunes, there is a linear structure, as there is a start, middle
and finish. It also starts each episode linking to what happened last episode. It is
also closed, as there is a definitive conclusion at the end of the game.
This game show also links to one of Barthes’ theories, but the Action theory. The
fast-paced show creates tension and keeps the audience interested in how hey will
fix their mistakes, in this case, keys that they didn’t manage to get.
There is a slight introduction of binary opposites, as it is the contestants, the good
guys, versus the bad guy, the evil one.
Rules and narrative theory for my
Game Show
My Game Show
My game show would include the new world of virtual reality.
There would be three teams, and it would include one contestant from each
team on the show wearing a VR headset and being thrown into a different
world, with no idea on what to do or how to do it.
There would also be four other contestants on each team on the show to
guide the person with the headset on. For example, the one contestant with
the headset on would be put into the virtual reality of a huge maze with
obstacles and challenges they need to complete to continue to the next
round.
The contestants still in the real world would have a booklet with instructions
on how to guide the person with the VR headset on, through the maze,
meaning the person with the headset on would have to describe what they
saw, or what the challenge was, and the people at the panel would have to
find the correct set of instructions.
There would be three rounds, and they are all races. In the first round, the first
person to complete the challenge is first, and the last loses and is taken out of
the game. This is then the same for the next round where the two remaining
teams would be in a head to head race. The winner then continues to the final
round and the losing team is also thrown out of the game. In the last round,
the last team would be in a race against time. There would be a time limit, and
if they complete the challenge in the time limit, they win the jackpot prize, but
if they don’t, they just keep what they’ve won so far. Contestants can win
prizes after certain challenges, but not all.
Narrative theory
My game show will be linear, as it will have a start, middle
and definite end to it. It is also closed as there is a winner,
and every week there are new contestants, so the show does
not continue from one episode to another.
According to Barthes, my game show is connected with his
theory of action, as the person in the world of virtual reality
is presented with a question, in this case being the world
that they are put into. They then have to work out a way of
answering the question, or getting through the level.
However there are no enigmas as the show does not leave
anyone confused for the whole show, but does have an air of
mystery while being played, until it is figured out.
There is also a very strong element of Levi-Strauss’ theory of
binary opposition as the whole game is based on Team A v.
Team B v. Team C, so there is always a sense of rivalry.
Audience Theory for my
Game Show
The audience targeted by my show would be members of the public, as the game show itself
should be played by the public. The demographic analysis of my audience would be the ABC1
group, as they are most likely to be the ones to have enough money to buy a television and a
television licence and also have enough spare time to watch the game show as they are not
overwhelmed with work. They would also be aged 18-25 and be early-adopters and explorers of
the digital world as my game show is based on virtual reality.
We can also see by the Uses and Gratifications Theory that they would use this show for
Entertainment and Diversion, as it distracts them a it and provides a part of their day where
they have no worries. As well as that, they could also us it for Social Integration and Interaction
(companionship) as someone watched my show, and someone they knew watched it too, they
would be able to talk about it and create a friendship based on similar interests.
They would also be aspirers as they would enjoy watching people win money and life changing
prizes and ‘aspire’ to also be the ones to have those things, however my game show would not
be suitable for the resigned as they do not like game shows based new things and my game
show is solely reliant on new technology.

It is also closed as there is a winner, and every week there are new contestants, so the show does not continue from one episode to another. According to Barthes, my game show is connected with his theory of action, as the person in the world of virtual reality is presented with a question, in this case being the world that they are put into. They then have to work out a way of answering the question, or getting through the level. However there are no enigmas as the show does not leave anyone confused for the whole show, but does have an air of mystery while being played, until it is figured out. There is also a very strong element of Levi-Strauss’ theory of binary opposition as the whole game is based on Team A v. Team B v. Team C, so there is always a sense of rivalry.
  • 5. Audience Theory for my Game Show
  • 6. The audience targeted by my show would be members of the public, as the game show itself should be played by the public. The demographic analysis of my audience would be the ABC1 group, as they are most likely to be the ones to have enough money to buy a television and a television licence and also have enough spare time to watch the game show as they are not overwhelmed with work. They would also be aged 18-25 and be early-adopters and explorers of the digital world as my game show is based on virtual reality. We can also see by the Uses and Gratifications Theory that they would use this show for Entertainment and Diversion, as it distracts them a it and provides a part of their day where they have no worries. As well as that, they could also us it for Social Integration and Interaction (companionship) as someone watched my show, and someone they knew watched it too, they would be able to talk about it and create a friendship based on similar interests. They would also be aspirers as they would enjoy watching people win money and life changing prizes and ‘aspire’ to also be the ones to have those things, however my game show would not be suitable for the resigned as they do not like game shows based new things and my game show is solely reliant on new technology.
