Special Assistant Position
1.
Special Assistant – Systemwide Admissions Initiatives & Strategic Planning As an integral part of the Undergraduate Admissions department’s analytical and management team at UCOP, the Special Assistant will provide analytical and policy level guidance on significant undergraduate admissions policy issues emanating from or anticipated as part of the President's Initiatives (e.g., implementation of community college transfer initiative, outreach & recruitment of underserved populations), as well as long‐range undergraduate admissions issues requiring sustained, in‐depth attention and analyses. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Admissions, and based in Oakland, California, the objective of the Special Assistant position is to contribute to the development of UC's overall messages on undergraduate admissions policies, practices, and outcomes, especially as it pertains to the admission of a diverse, well‐qualified student population. Basic Responsibilities: ▪ Conducts analyses that anticipates Presidential Initiatives and emerging issues in the area of undergraduate admissions. Provides deep background on national trends that may support or bolster innovations at UC in support of undergraduate admissions at the freshman and transfer student levels. ▪ Takes initiative and proposes strategic solutions and/or viable options to resolve problems and conflicts among differing views and opinions relating to undergraduate policies and practices among differing University constituencies. ▪ Contributes to the development of UC’s undergraduate admissions reports to the Regents and the legislature; identifies and analyzes themes and trends to be included in each year’s report; coordinates the production of necessary data. ▪ Provides insight, context, and expert understanding of the political and legal implications of undergraduate admission policies and practices as well as the highly complex interaction of all aspects of application, admission, and enrollment of students across the entire UC system. Requirements: ▪ Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences or a quantitative field and at least 10 years of processional experience in complex admissions policy analysis, project management and/or advanced quantitative analysis in an academic setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. ▪ Ability to acquire a thorough understanding of California’s educational landscape and other entities involved in the state’s higher education policy development. ▪ Demonstrated ability to work under a high level of independence in order to perform policy and operational analyses, formulate institutional recommendations based on these analyses, and implement operational and programmatic changes as a result of these recommendations. ▪ Exceptional writing skills, including the ability to prepare materials ranging from detailed, thorough analyses to concise summaries and talking points on complex issues for a variety of audiences at all levels of an organization. Preferred: ▪ Advanced degree (Masters or Doctoral) in the social sciences or quantitative field. ▪ Familiarity with UC campuses’ systems and operations related to undergraduate admissions programs.
