HPR 205 Week 1 Laboratory Assignment
Evaluating Homeostasis
Scientific Method. Due by Day 7. Prior to working
on the lab exercise, watch the How to Formulate
a Hypothesis video.
To view the lab exercises, log into the eScience
Labs student portal. Register your account using
the code sent to you by the bookstore. Keep your
login and password information as you will use
the portal again in each of the upcoming weeks.
By completing the Week One lab exercise, you
will learn how to look at data using the scientific
method. This includes scientific observation,
variables, controls, and errors, methods of
3. collecting data, data analysis, calculations,
scientific reasoning, and writing a lab report. In
the exercise, you are asked to partner with
another person, who is capable of doing physical
exercise for one minute. A resting heart rate and
post-exercise heart rate will be taken and
recorded. Use the heart rate information to
complete the Respiratory and Heart Rate Table.
You will create a hypothesis to predict what the
physiological response is to exercise and how
this helps the body maintain homeostasis.
Finally, answer lab questions that address the
different elements of the scientific method.
You will complete your answers on the Lab
Report form linked in the Week One lab exercise
area on the eScience Lab portal. Please open the
form, click on File, choose Save As, and save to a
folder where you can find the form later, add
your answers, and Save again. Finally, you will
attach and submit the form to Waypoint in the
Week One Laboratory in the Ashford University
classroom. Please note: the document must be
attached and submitted to Waypoint.
Assignments that are copied and pasted into the
comment box or emailed to the instructor will
not be accepted and will receive a zero score.
4. Your assignment must be formatted according to
APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford
Writing Center.

HPR 205 Week 3 Laboratory AssignmentReflexes
NEW
Nervous System: Special Senses. Due by Day 7.
Log into eScience Labs to review the nervous
system via animations and pre-lab readings for
the exercise. The animations will address the
anatomy of the ear, the sense of hearing, the
sense of sight, the sense of smell, the sense of
taste, reflex arc, and the 12 cranial nerves. The
pre-lab readings will reinforce the different
segments of the central nervous system and the
peripheral nervous system, the type of receptors
that allow for the sense of touch and pain, and
the anatomy and physiology of the remaining
special sense organs.
During the lab exercise, you will learn about the
pupillary light reflex is and possible
14. dysfunctions seen via this reflex. This exercise
enables you to see a reflex arc in action and to
describe the steps of this function of the body.
Further, you will learn how the cranial nerves
function by testing the cranial nerves with a
partner. Finally, you will perform an exercise in
which you will experience how touch,
temperature, and pain are differentiated.
You will complete your answers on the Lab
Report form linked in the Week Three lab
exercise area on the eScience Lab portal. Open
the form, click on File, choose Save As and save
to a folder where you can find the form later.
Enter your answers, and Save again. Attach and
submit the form to the Week Three Laboratory
Dropbox in the Ashford University classroom.
Please note: The document must be attached and
submitted to the Dropbox. Assignments that are
copied and pasted into the comment box or
emailed to the instructor will not be accepted
and will receive a zero score.

Pressure
Blood Pressure. Due by Day 7. This week, you
will log in to eScienceLabs to complete the two
lab exercise assignments. These labs cover the
cCirculatory and reproductive systems. You will
learn about these systems via animations and
pre-lab readings for the exercises. The
animations will address the anatomy and
physiology of blood and the heart, the
circulatory system, blood pressure, and the
reproductive system.
The pre-lab readings will reinforce the elements
of the circulatory system, including the role the
respiratory system plays, the branches of the
circulatory system, blood pressure, and cardiac
output. You will view the Blood Pressure Virtual
17. Lab animation before completing the Lab Report
data and questions; data from the animation will
be used in the Lab Report. Throughout the Blood
Pressure lab, you will learn the basics on how to
take a blood pressure reading, how blood
pressure shows circulatory health, and what the
normal sounds of blood pressure indicate, and
how exercise impacts blood pressure.
For this assignment you must:
Complete the blood pressure and pulse reading
table.
Answers questions one through six
Your assignment must be formatted according to
APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford

review the anatomy and answer the lab report
questions. At the end of this lab exercise, you will
be able to identify which anatomy is comparative
in function in the male system versus the female
system. You will fill in your answers on the Lab
Report form linked in the Week Four lab
exercise area on the eScience Lab portal.

HPR 205 Week 5 Final Project Power Point
Presentation
PowerPoint Presentation. Due by Day 7. In your
role as a health care professional, you have been
asked to speak to a community group regarding
the connection between the human body and
disease. You have been asked to select one of the
CDC’s top five diseases (heart disease, stroke,
cancer, diabetes, or arthritis) that affects the
systems explored in the class (see table below)
and create a PowerPoint presentation that:
20. Uses lay-person and medical terminology to
describe the anatomical and physiological
changes associated with the condition.
Describes proper functioning of the primary
system(s) that is/are affected by the chronic
disease you select:
o Major organ(s)
o Essential functions o Importance to health
Evaluates the dysfunction as a result of your
chosen disease and describes the following: o
Contributing factors
o The nature of the dysfunction
o The effect on other systems(comorbidities)
Evaluates at least one genetic factor and at least
two lifestyle factors that contribute to the onset
of the disease.
Analyzes at least two preventive actions people
can take to reduce their risk of getting the
disease.
Analyzes at least two environmental elements
that contribute to the onset and progression of
the disease.
21. Examples include: air quality, chemicals in
products regularly used and/or consumed, food
quality, consumption of soda and caffeine,
petroleum-based chemicals used on and in food,
genetically modified foods, impact of plastic,
tobacco use and/or second-hand smoke, UV light
exposure, environmental carcinogens, etcetera.
Analyze ways in which the treatment of the
disease can negatively impact the environment.
Examples include: medical and household waste,
recycling challenges, radiation, and production
of electricity, water usage, paper usage, air
pollution, and etcetera.
Systems covered in class:
Skeletal
Muscle

impacts a person’s blood pressure.
At the conclusion of this lab exercise, you will
understand and be able to use normal urinary
analysis findings to make a diagnosis based on
24. urinalysis data and other findings provided in
multiple scenarios. Additionally, you will learn
how urine indicates overall hydration, health
problems that can be identified through urine
color, and why taking a regular urinalysis is
important in pregnant women. Answer the
questions on the respective Lab Report form.
For this Assignment you must:
