EDU 324 Week 1 Assignment Colonial Classroom Then
and Now NEW
Instruction in colonial schools was primarily religious
and authoritarian. Its goal was preparation for
eternity. The curriculum stressed the four Rs: readin’,
’ritin’, ’rithmetic, and religion. Memorization and
recitation were the dominant instructional processes.
2. The schoolmaster relied on fear to motivate children
and to keep them in order. It was not uncommon for a
gag to be put in the mouth of a child who talked too
much or for a child who did not perform well to be
made to stand in the corner, sometimes on a stool,
wearing a dunce cap.
Classes often lasted from about 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a
two-hour break for lunch, for eight months (March to
October) and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for four months
(November to February). In the early Colonial Period,
classes were held in the house of the schoolmaster or
the town meeting house. Later, when schoolhouses
were built, they were scarcely more than a narrow log
box with a master’s desk and crude wooden student
benches. “Many schoolhouses did not have glass set in
the small windows but newspaper or white paper
greased with lard were fastened in the rude sashes, or
in holes cut in the wall, and let in a little light” (Glubok,
1969, p. 120).
3. Choose four points from above (e.g., fear to motivate,
memorization and recitation as instructional practice)
and compare them to today’s classroom in the graphic
organizer below.
In a one- to two-page essay, provide examples to
demonstrate how the practices from colonial days are
similar to or different from today’s practices. Describe
any practices from the Colonial Period you wish were
still in practice today and explain why. After reviewing
the graphic organizer, explain whether or not
progression has occurred in the education field over
time. Outline how this transformation affects you as a
classroom teacher in the 21st century.
Your finished paper must include the graphic
organizer, a title page, and a reference page using APA
6th-edition formats. It should not exceed three pages
in length (not including title and reference pages).
Include a minimum of two sources in addition to your
textbook and reference them in APA style.

EDU 324 Week 1 Journal The New England Primer
NEW
It has been said that The New England Primer was the
most influential textbook in history. This text, written
by Benjamin Harris in 1690, was used to teach
reading. School in the 1700s was heavily influenced by
religion. The common belief was that the inability to
read was Satan’s way to keep people from reading the
Bible.
Scenario: Imagine you walk into your third grade
classroom and your reading/literature textbooks have
been replaced with The New England Primer. What
5. would you say to your administrator? Predict your
students’ reactions. Decide what you would do for
reading today.

EDU 324 Week 2 Assignment Take a Stand NEW
Education was a priority for the founding fathers. Dr.
Benjamin Rush, unlike his peers, was an advocate for
education that included both females and blacks. He
founded one of the first female academies in the
United States, the Young Ladies Academy of
Philadelphia. Although he was a believer in women
being educated, his reasoning for the importance of
education was that it would make women more
subservient to men.
In a one- to two-page APA-formatted paper, refer to
your text and then “take a stand.” You will either
7. defend Rush’s position for creating the curriculum he
implemented (a few of the subjects taught: general
knowledge of bookkeeping, vocal music and dance,
and moral philosophy) or discredit his stance and
explain how women would be better off without this
bias and/or unfair education. List at least three
reasons to support your opinion.

Your finished paper must include a title page and a
reference page formatted in APA 6th-edition style. It
should include a minimum of one source in addition to
your textbook and should not exceed two pages (not
including title and reference pages).

7. Horace Mann (1779-1859) is best known as the
father of the American public education system. Mann
improved the school system by limiting private
influence, increasing the number of high schools and
increasing attendance. In addition, he was
instrumental in bettering the salaries for teachers.
Review the following quotes from this great advocate
for education. Select one of the quotes and explain
what it means to you more than 200 years later.

W.E.B. Du Bois was the first AfricanAmerican to earn a
doctorate from Harvard. He fought for African
American rights and cofounded the NAACP. Du Bois
sought social, economic and political reforms to
expand equality and access for minorities (Pullman &
Van Patten).
Watch the short biography of W.E.B. Du Bois on
Bio.com. Then reflect on the following quote:
13. “Education and work are levers to uplift a people.
Work alone will not do it unless inspired by the right
ideals and guided by intelligence. Education must not
simply teach work—it must teach life.” - W. E. B.
DuBois, The Negro Problem, 1903
Although this quote is more than 100 years old, the
words still ring true for our society today. Please
explain what you think “Education must not simply
teach work—it must teach life” meant then and what it
means now.

EDU 324 Week 5 Final Project Interactive Timeline
For the Final Project, you are required to make a
timeline of the events in the history of American
education that made a significantimpact, and include a
summary of each event.
18. Guidelines for the Timeline
To create the timeline, use the information from each
week’s Timeline Discussion Forum response. (You
may use the events you listed or the events your peers
have listed. You will upload your text, event by event,
to a timeline you create using Tiki-Toki. You must
include historical events, with each significant time
period being represented with at least two different
events/individuals. You must include an introduction
timeline slide (as prompted by tiki-toki) that will
include your name, the name of the course, and a brief
description of what your timeline entails. You must
include a minimum of 20 historical events; feel free to
include more events in the area(s) that you feel were
most significant. You are encouraged to use scholarly
sources where appropriate. After selecting the
historical events, compose a brief summary (25 to 50
words) for each, and select and include a
historical image or video that highlights the event.
Include a minimum of three sources in addition to
19. your textbook and reference them in APA 6th-edition
style. Once the timeline is complete, please include the
final tiki- toki link in your written document.
Written document must include:
-toki link
Reflection Items:
Determine which event listed in your timeline you
feel is the most significant and explain why.
and explain why.
which event you would like to have been a part of and

future timelines and provide a rationale.
20. Please note you will be graded on the clarity of your
narrative and the appropriateness of design (e.g., the
quality of the images, how well the images relate to the
given event) and the quality of your response to the
reflection items.
The summaries and the written portion of the Final
Project will be submittedto Turnitin, so be sure to cite
your sources appropriately. Note that you must also
cite in APA format the source of each of the selected
historical images and/or videos. Music clips are also
welcome if you can legitimately connect the song to
the historical event (and properly cite the source).

EDU 324 Week 5 Journal What is Balance in the
Elementary Classroom? NEW
Review the following paragraphs from the
Introduction in Chapter 10 of your text:
The first president of the new century, George W.
Bush, offered a reform plan called No Child Left
Behind (NCLB). The most sweeping education reform
legislation since the Elementary and Secondary
22. Education Act of 1965, it created “a much larger
federal presence in educational policy and funding and
set the foundation for a national testing system”
(Lewis, 2002, p. 423). It also provided the framework
and impetus for standards-based reform of education
at the state level.
The NCLB mandates for Title I schools were quickly
adopted and applied to all public schools, many of
which struggled to develop and deliver curricula to
meet state standards, develop and administer
assessments of student progress, improve student
achievement, staff the schools with “highly qualified”
teachers, and increase accountability to various
constituencies. (Webb, 2014)
Now, take a look at the following cartoon:
There is a clear focus on testing in both the text
explanation and the above cartoon. Please explain

means to you.
