3. CONCEPT
• Designed as one of the Starbucks
Concept stores, “The project aimed to
make a structure that harmonizes with
such townscape, using a unique system
of weaving thin woods diagonally”
• Kengo Kuma says he did not want the
cafe to appear detached from its setting
and wanted to suggest that Starbucks is
‘nestling in a tree’
4. CONCEPT
• The diagonal weaving method is used in
order to bring in a sense of direction and
fluidity
• Four steps come to one point because of
the diagonal- a complicated joint
• Piling up of small parts from the ground
was highly developed in the traditional
architecture of Japan and China
• The end result is a fluid web that curves
as it ‘moves’ inwards, drawing visitors in
along with it.
5. THE WOODWORK
• This is a type of woodwork known as
kigumi - a traditional Japanese method
used to create the framework for
housing
• Instead of using nails to solidify the
structure, the wood is cut into and
slotted together
• In the Architect Kengo Kuma’s own
words, the theme of this store is the
"fusion of the traditional and the modern
using natural materials"
7. MATERIALS
• The criss-crossing lattice work is made
from Cedar wood
• Visible behind or above the lattice work
for the walls and ceiling is the cement-
bonded chipboard that Kuma claims is
one of his favourite materials
• The rest of the space is left relatively bare
with unassuming furniture and a zig-zag
banquette – all in greys, blacks and
untreated OSB (Oriented Strand Board)
• The zigzag bench, the chairs and the
tables, were made of straw and resin
8. LIGHTING
• Daylight is allowed through the ceiling and
it filters through the lattice work to reach
the interiors
• The entrance is completely made of glass
making sure the long interiors have natural
light throughout the day
9. LIGHTING
• As it gets darker outside, the contrast
between the soft lights and the shadows
from the woodwork creates an increasingly
dream-like atmosphere.
• Even the lights near the bar are made of
wood, giving the entire store a soft glow
