The Development Of The Horror Genre Throughout The Years

Final Semester Paper
The Development of the Horror Genre Throughout the Years "Both horror and science fiction explore the boundaries of what is means to be human
(Belton, 272)." This is done by emphasizing the dilemmas of the figures who straddle the border of human and non–human (Belton, 273). Horror and
Sci–fi contain narratives that take on a form of a search for knowledge that will enable the human race to overcome any obstacle that involves a
supernatural force (Belton, 273); the story lines require a search or journey to resolve the issue. Horror and Sci–fi often overlap when there is a
monster featured in a sci–fi film; or when a horror film is set in the future (Belton, 271). The two differ in purpose, horror, a sub–genre for sci–fi, was
created to generate fear through a figure of a monster or supernatural being. While Sci–fi has a chief purpose of focusing on science and reasoning
(Belton, 272). The development of both genres is created to a number of works done throughout the years. The improvement of special effects,
influences from the original masters of suspense, camera angles, and heightened elements of the horror film genre has allowed it to maintain its
popular demand amongst audiences for decades.
Although Native Americans have passed legends about werewolves, evil spirits, and monsters from tribe to tribe since before the 14th century, it was
not until this time that spiritual literature emerged with the

Destry Rides Again, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, and the Fall of the Hollywood Studio System
Thomas Schatz cites the 1950's as the inevitable end of the Hollywood film studio system, with the signs appearing as early as the height of the
second World War (472). However, the seeds of discontent and disintegration within the system were apparent as soon as the late 1930's, exemplified
in such films as Destry Rides Again (1939, George Marshall) and Mr. Smith Goes ToWashington (1939, Frank Capra). The production of these two
films and the paths down which they led their star (James Stewart), directors (at least Frank Capra), and studios (Universal and Columbia, respectively)
are evidence of the decline of the studio system. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The balance of power was thus tipped in favor of the individual filmmakers. These films also served to launch James Stewart's career as a successful
leading man (usually next to a star leading lady), particularly in the western genre (The Man From Laramie, The Naked Spur, Winchester 73), as a
patriotic all–American (It's a Wonderful Life, again with Capra), and working with and as an independent (his infamous contract with Universal and
his work with Alfred Hitchcock, both in the 1950's). Destry Rides Again and Mr.Smith Goes To Washington also raise issues regarding the value
placed on dramatic and outright patriotic films in comparison to the value placed on films which serve as mere entertainment. While Mr. Smith Goes
to Washington is an overtly political film, Destry Rides Again, in its own way, is highly political and both films reveal that the United States of 1939
was a politically charged nation preparing itself subconsciously to take part in a worldwide war.
During the second half of the 1930s, Universal came under a completely new ownership. The traditional owners, the Laemmle family, lost Universal at
this time after leading it up and down the mountains and valleys of success and failure. The new owner, J. Cheever Cowdin, set up Robert H.
Cochrane and Charles R. Rogers in charge of Universal. They kept the company going, sometimes by thin margins, until the very end of the 1930s

Gone Girl
From the origin of the Noir genre (although originally shot in all black in white) the dark content has still remained the focal point of the genre.
(Conard, 2007, p.1–4). Now called neo–noir, the genre encompasses a broad variety of films linked together by specific qualities. Those qualities often
revolve around the concept of disorienting the viewer (p.1–4). From inverted stereotypical values, the "bad" guys getting away with the crimes
committed, and the overall twisted, dark plot line reflected in the neo–noir genre all can be encompassed by the disorienting aspect (p.1–4). Gone Girl
is a spitting image of what the neo–noir genre represents. The film revolves around the disappearance of Amy Dunne, who is the wife of Nick.

The film Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher, reflects the definition of a neo–noir film. Through this essay, the disorientation of the viewer, which is
a key aspect of the neo–noir genre, will be analyzed through the cinematography, the flipped traditional values, and the format of the film. The
beginning half of the film tries to convince the reader that Nick has to be the person responsible for Amy's disappearance. The alternating
perspectives of Nick and Amy make Amy appear to be a perfect woman. One of the first scenes of Nicks shows him going into a bar. This day is
the day that Amy disappears, coincidentally the day of their fifth wedding anniversary, although, at this point, Nick does not know. He walks into the
bar, around late morning, early afternoon time, and starts a conversation with his sister. He asks for a bourbon at a very early hour and begins to talk
about his wife. The way Nick talks about his wife makes her appear to be a hindrance in his life. He is perpetuating the stereotype of a male in this
moment. The fact that he is drinking at such an early hour whilst complaining about his wife is the

Peter Jackson Conventions
In modern society within the movie world, we can see which genres are the most striking and appealing to the audience. The genres that come to mind
are adventure, action, fantasy, comedy, drama, horror and thriller. This essay will go over the how director, filmmaker, screenwriter and producer Peter
Jackson makes practical and effective use of genre to shape and decorate his peculiar and original creative visual style into the filmmaking world.
Most known for his work on 'The Lord of the Rings' Trilogy and other films such as 'King Kong', 'The Lovely Bones' and 'Dead Alive'. With all his
movies having one or all of the genres roles mentioned, we will see how they connect to each other and keep audiences involved with these

Even with his past work that dates back to 1992, he still conveys his artistic style, in 'Dead Alive' the genres that are evident in this movie are horror,
comedy, black comedy, horror comedy and splatterfilm, but the movie he directed that put him on the United States map was 'Heavenly Creatures'
this movie was his big step up from the kinds of movies he did previously, which was what he called "splatter comedies". Heavenly Creatures is a true
story behind the friendship between Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, before they were convicted of the brutal murder of Honora Parker, the main
genres are romance, fantasy, drama, and true crime. These two girls that become best friends in the movie become trapped in their own fantasy, as we
follow them through–out the film, their relationship becomes to intense, the mother Honora tries to stop them, Pauline thinks that her mother is the

Movie Analysis : Dog Soldiers
A film that I enjoyed and I constantly revisit is an English horror comedy film, Dog Soldiers. The reason why this film is worth watching is because
of the realistic visual effects used to portray the werewolves in the movie, effective visual elements, and the unpredictable plot. This film is about
platoon of British soldiers sent on a mission to train with a group of British Special Air Service (SAS) soldiers in the Scottish Highlands. Soon the
viewers discover that the SAS forces have been slaughtered by an unseen enemy, werewolves. The British soldiers are later chased into an abandoned
house, where they hold out for the rest of the movie. They are continuously assaulted by the werewolves, which are slowly introduced as the film
progresses, in order to keep the viewer guessing how the werewolves will look. The viewer is eventually given a full view of the werewolves
throughout a few scenes of the film. Slowly, the werewolves wipe out the platoon, until there are only two soldiers left. Also, during the timespan
between the start and end of the film, secrets that offer a plot twist are revealed by an SAS commander who survived the attack on the SAS forces,
which reveal the reason why the British Soldiers were sent on the mission in the first place. An element that adds comic relief to this film is the use
popular culture references, which are placed in the film in many ways, whether it is in the names of characters or dialogue in the film. Films like Evil

New Classics of the Horror Film Genre Essay
Dracula. Frankenstein. Godzilla. These monsters no longer strike fear into the hearts of viewers as they once did. Formerly the villains of the classic

slasher movie of the present, while the monster villain gives its role to the deranged, psychotic serial killer. Friday the 13th series, Nightmare on Elm
Street, Copycat and Seven have become the new classics in the genre of the horror film. With films like The People Under the Stairs, Nightmare on

Liver alone?!" When none of the others laugh, Stu's smile fades and he remarks in an incredulous tone, "Liver alone. It was a joke." While Stu's
friends may not be able to see past the joke's tactless nature to its humor, I laugh each time Isee the film again.
Not only do the characters not take themselves seriously, they also don't take horror movies seriously. A day after the first murders take place,
Sidney Prescott receives a cryptic phone call. However, she is not frightened because she believes the caller to be one of her own friends Randy, a
movie lover, calling to harass her. The mysterious caller asks her why she doesn't like horror films and she replies, "What's the point? They're all the
same: some stupid killer stalking some big–breasted girl who can't act and is always running up the stairs when she should be going out the front
door. It's insulting." As an audience member, I realize that this skeptical"and often accurate"view of horror movies is a message directly from the
film's writer and director (Riptov 86).
Later in the film, when Sidney suggests that the killer might still be on the loose, her best friend Tatem replies, "Don't go there, Sid. You're starting
to sound like one of those Wes Carpenter flicks." As the audience, we get a laugh out of this statement because not only do we know that Tatem has
misnamed Wes Craven, we also know this is a"Wes Craven flick." These scenes are like inside jokes for the viewers;

Instruction for Case: Netflix’s Business Model and...
Instructions for Analysis of Case 6
1.How strong are the competitive forces in the movie rental marketplace? Do a five forces analysis to support your answer.
Below is an analysis of five forces model of competition in the movie rental industry:
Rivalry among companies competing in movie rentals
Rivalry is centered on such factors as
Price of movie rentals (rented either individually or via a subscription plan); variety of subscription plans to choose from.
Convenience in renting movies (including returning rented DVDs).
Breadth of selection (size and diversity of movie rental library).
Availability of the DVD
Of course, DVD availability is not a factor when the rented movie is being streamed over the Internet by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But while collective competitive pressures are fairly strong and likely to intensify, they are now not so strong as to prevent many movie rental
companies–especially Netflix–from being profitable. Up to this point, the movie rental companies (with the exception of Blockbuster and Movie
Gallery) have able to cope with rivalry, the bargaining power of the movie studios, and the competitive pressures from substitutes. It would not,
however, come as a shock if the bargaining power of the movie studios begins to squeeze the profitability of VOD/Internet streaming providers as they
demand bigger fees in return for granting streaming access to the libraries of movie titles.
The dismal financial performance of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery confirm that competitive conditions for earning attractive profits are pretty tough.
Netflix, on the other hand, is doing very, very well from the standpoints of revenue growth and financial performance. (This is true of Redbox, as well,
which is the subject of the next case)
2.What forces are driving change in the movie rental industry? Are these driving forces likely to have a favorable or unfavorable impact on competitive
intensity and future industry profitability?
пЃ®Technological changes related to the Internet.
пЃ®Changes in how the product is used.
пЃ®Changes in costs

Comparing Dziga Vertov's Film, Man with a Movie Camera and Run Lola Run
" The main and essential thing is : the sensory exploration of the world through film. We therefore take as a point of departure the use of the camera as
a keno–eye, more perfect than the human eye, for the exploration of the chaos of visual phenomena that fills space."
– Dziga Vertov , Manifesto The Council of Three (1923)
The innovative theories and filmmaking techniques of Dziga Vertov revolutionized the way films are made today. Man With a Movie Camera (1929), a
documentary that represented the peak of the Soviet avant–garde film movement in the twenties, displayed techniques in montage, creative camera
angles, rich imagery, but most importantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Not 'filming life unawares' for the sake of the 'unawares', but in order to show people without masks, without makeup, to catch them through the eye of
the camera in a moment when they are not acting..." (41 Vertov)
His original ways of thinking, isolated him from all other filmmakers. Even his style of using "montage" (editing style commonly used by Soviet
directors) in Man with a Movie Camera was very different. In this film, hours of footage are edited together in many cuts, which is the style that
Vertov is well known for. His cuts are very rapid and he displays them accordingly to music to add excitement to the sequence. The sequences act on all
three levels of montage: narrative, intellectual, and emotional. For example in the beginning of Man with a Movie Camera, there is a sequence in a
theatre where the cameraman sets up the film for the audience to watch (appendix 1). The lights come on, the seats go down, the cameraman sets up
the projector, the audience enters, the lights dim, the orchestra awaits and then the manifest begins. The narration comes from the editor throughout the
whole film. The cameraman cannot possibly be the narrator since he is randomly out of frame and it is a silent film.
"From the very beginning... the centrality of the cameraman's vision is put into question, since he moves out

John Waters Use Of Taboos In Cult Film
Taboo as defined the dictionary is: "banned on grounds of morality or taste." Taboo topics in cult film are often dealt with in an excessive manner.
These taboos can include ideas about sex, family, and gender roles among others. They showcase these taboos in an excess manner. The following
films have not only discussions of taboo subjects but depict taboo acts. The films Eraserhead and Pink Flamingos feature excess and the liberal
discussion of taboos. Eraserhead represents a taboo of traditional family life. The way in which everyone treats the 'baby' is a taboo against the
traditional family views of the time. The film appears to want you to be appalled by the actions of Henry towards the 'baby'. Traditionally there would

John Waters intends to break almost every possible taboo in this film. "Waters's creatures were a mГ©nage of corpulent transvestites, blue–haired
flashers, egg–sucking hags, and chicken fucking adolescents," they write in "John Waters Presents The Filthiest People Alive" from Midnight
Movies of the characters in the film (137). This statement alone, about the characters, is enough to know this film has crossed some lines. There
is excess in the amount of taboos presented in this film including bestiality, incest, cannibalism, and rape among many others. Some social taboos
broken are worse than others. While Divine holds the title of 'filthiest person alive' it is her family that allows her to reach that title. It is more so
her son, Cracker that does or is involved in the worse taboo actions. His act of bestiality with his chickens is much worse than Divine smuggling
raw meat between her legs or running a jogger off the road. Her most taboo act would be the incestuous act of fellating her son, second to that being
her murder of the Marble couple. The Marble couple on the other hand are predators. Between their kidnapping of girls in order to impregnate them
and sell their babies and his flashing of his genitals to unsuspecting girls on the street, these two at first glance seem to be worse and more vile than
Divine and her

Essay on Quentin Tarentino
Quentin Tarentino
Throughout the many years the film industry has grown, a certain type of filmmaker immerged, known as an auteur. An auteur, usually a director, has
a strong personal style and exercises creative control over his or her works. Quentin Tarentino, for example, has proven himself to be an auteur in
various ways. Quentin Tarentino worked for four years as a clerk in a Los Angelesvideo store, where he made his feature directorial and screenwriting
debut of Reservoir Dogs, and where he further expanded his great knowledge of film. Tarentino's personal style incorporates a lot of well thought out
violence, swearing, repetitive casting, and many other filming techniques. In looking at Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, and ... Show more content on

The last very brutal scene of the movie is when the whole crew of gangsters hold guns that are pointed at each other for the sake of Mr. Orange's
life. Eventually, the whole gang ends up dying, even Mr. Orange. When he confesses to being a cop Mr. White puts a bullet in his head and is
instantly killed by the police officers that came in for the bust. All this violence portrays many things about the film and about what Tarentino is
trying to suggest. He manifests these gangster characters with such disregard to living, going to jail, and swearing simply to show the audience how
he believes criminals act. Quentin therefore tries to present a criminal lifestyle as it most likely is, not worth it. He suggests that a life of crime and
violence leads to dead ends such as jail, death, or predicaments such as having an informant on a well–planned out diamond heist. Quentin Tarentino
uses tracking shots that also leave his mark on the movies he directs. For instance, when Mr. Blonde starts to lead his fellow criminals out to the car
to look at the cop he has captured. The camera begins to follow the group out to the car from their backsides, and then opens up to the outside of the
warehouse, from dark to light. This shows the criminals containment in the warehouse; in a way trapped from leaving. When they arrive to the car, the
camera shows the criminals from a low–angle. This represents their power over the cop, and the feelings they hold for their superiority over law, when

The term impersonator is considered somewhat demeaning in the acting world, suggesting that the actor has simply copied the manner, dialect, and

Even though he can be considered a personality actor, no one would argue that Nicholson, who has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won

But a lesser talent who relies too much on personality risks staying power. Will audiences 50 years from now recognize the strength of personality? Or
will it simply seemed mannered and curious, a distraction instead of a beloved trait?
Stars
To define a star, think about a personality actor, only more so. A star is a distinctive screen persona, who is well
–known and popular with the
moviegoing public, often to the point that some avid movie fans become deeply curious about the actor's private life Hollywood has a long love
affair with stars, since the days of Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. Stars are actors who are simply famous on–screen and off, personalities so
magnetic that we are interested not just in their movies but in their personal lives as well. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are both talented actors. But
they're also famous stars, so much so that tabloids and gossip sites endlessly speculate on their relationship, their children, and every other aspect of
their lives. Obviously this has been taken to almost absurd extremes today, where Web sites breathlessly report the content of text messages between

The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early Nineteen–Thirties The late 1920s in America was a particularly tumultuous period of time for the
country. The Wall Street Crash in 1929 had led to high levels of unemployment and dissatisfaction within the country. The Depression (1929
–1934),
which was a direct result of The Wall Street Crash, led to a breakdown of industry and commerce within the country and weakened its global position
as a superpower. People began to realise that the ideal which had been frequently promoted by governmental propaganda of The American Dream

During this period the rise of urban gang rule and mobsters was unprecedented, mainly emerging from minority immigrant groups (Jewish/Italian
/Irish). Initially the gangsters of the period were seen as high achievers as they were associated with the proletariat and seemed to be capable of rising
above there roots, even during hard times in America, and achieve wealth. When considering the socio–economic factors it is easy to understand why
such men were considered as "gangster–heroes"[3] who represented the people, however the only way that gangsters could achieve this wealth,
subsequently fulfilling the American Dream, was by stealing it. "Accruing capital meant accruing power over others"[4]. Therefore it could be argued
that the success gangsters exemplified was a perverse form of the American dream as it disregarded some of the key elements of the ideal. The fact that
at this stage in America gangsters were the only group within society who could make upward mobility believable, "tells much about how legitimate
institutions had failed – but that mobility was still at the core of what Americans held to be the American dream"[5].
In the early 1930's productions began within Hollywood of what were commonly described as "social problem pictures"[6], these films dealt
specifically with the social difficulties of the period such as unemployment/labour struggles ("Black

How Does Stooddard Reveal The Truth
Tom doesn't say anything because he knows that Stoddard is grounded in his beliefs and believes that the town can turn around with the help of his

Stoddard doesn't reveal the truth because it would be detrimental to his campaign. Not only is he not the man that shot vance, which would ruin his
clout, but now he is the man that lied about killing a man, that would now ruin his reputation as a politician.
This film has an interesting moral complexity to it. Stoddard is inspired to handle his opposition with Vance in a civil and legal matter, which many
people would consider noble and moral. However, when it comes to protecting his own self interests (i.e. Haley and the nomination), Stoddard's morals
and integrity become rather flexible.

under laws of self defense, is justifiable. However, the arguments for Ransom cease as the viewer considers that not only has Stoddard gone against
his very vocal opposition to guns, but now is also basing his entire campaign on a lie, that he in fact did not kill

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window: Sound Essay
Sound is everywhere. It is part of our everyday lives and our interactions and definitely a part of film. Sound, especially dialogue, makes it easier to
understand what is happening. But it also provides texture and emotion to each scene. Though most moviegoers might think of film as an essentially
visual experience, we cannot underestimate the importance of sound and music in film. Most movies would not be interesting at all if you were to take
away the sound and music. Sound enables the director to create certain moods and emotions, express continuity throughout the film, tell a story, and
even enhance meanings. Not only can sound be an aural sense but a visual sense as well and director Alfred Hitchcock knew this and applied it in ...

Thorwald or even another character's ill–fate. We also find sound used in this manner when Mr. Thorwald finds out that Jeff is the one that has been
spying on him. Mr. Thorwald can only be heard exiting the elevator and making his way towards Jeff's apartment. Lars Thorwald has only been seen
from a safe distance through Jeff's window. Now the murderer can only be heard approaching with each footstep, louder than the next. Hearing only
footsteps as they draw closer creates the feeling of suspense and fear, where one feels like they are in Jeff's apartment with him. Hitchcock not only
creates suspense or terror with sounds, he also creates balance and ambiance using carefully selected sounds. In John Fawell's book, Hitchcock's Rear
Window: The Well–made Film, he notes that "Hitchcock gave careful consideration to the smallest sounds in his films" (Fawell 28).
Hitchcock made sure to limit the sounds to ones that could only be heard from Jeff's point of view, since the majority of the film was through his
eyes. Conversations being held throughout the apartments can vaguely be heard as if the audience is inside Jeff's apartment with him. For example
when Mr and Mrs. Thorwald engage in a verbal battle, the audience is only able to hear muffled words, but the tone of those words can clearly be
identified. Hitchcock did not add irrelevant noises that were outside of the apartment complex to create the sense that the characters were stuck in

The Film, Like All Extremist Films
Beginning around the late 1990s, a transgressive cinematic movement by the name of The New French Extremity emerged and brought forth an
"aggressive and abrasive [form] of cinema that [sought] a more confrontational experience." (Palmer, 22). Among the numerous films within the
movement, few films have maintained their initial notoriety, and far less have continued to be as provocative as Martyrs (2008). Like other films
within the New French Extremity, Martyrs aims to be uncompromising and unpleasant through its implementation of avant garde filming techniques
and its pushing of social boundaries.

they eat breakfast. The doorbell rings and when the father answers the door, he's shot in the chest and propelled into the staircase behind him with

Comparisons to torture porn have been drawn to films like Martyrs in an attempt to dismiss its use of brutal violence as pointlessly excessive. As Xan

there are undeniable similarities between films of the New French Extremity and torture porn, these seem to be deliberate subversions of the
conventions found in the latter subgenre. Where in a torture porn film, there is "no point of identification for the spectator" and this provides the
audience with a safe viewing experience in which they're free to revel jovially in the horrific imagery; Martyrs allows the audience to sympathize and

Predator Compare And Contrast
1987's film "Predator" is an unprecedented action thriller that graced the world with its grandiose portrayal of over the top action, suspense, and more
than enough muscle between these actors to put even such films as "Pumping Iron" to shame. Predator is a simple film, and one that has no time for
romance nor the "time to bleed". This film is so brilliantly casted, and along with its simple plot and dialogue it is a blatant message to anyone who
watches it even today; Hollywood can simply never successfully remake or replicate this masterpiece in today's cinema.
Predator as far as film plots go is extremely simple in its story and acting. It does not try to make itself out to be anything more than that. It starts off

It's been made a lot easier to get ahold of pirated films and can usually be downloaded in minutes
one can peer–to–peer share with friends

I wonder if this is really Hollywood's way of two–tiered marketing. Supply movie theatres with blockbuster releases and make huge profits at
concession stands as well as the box office then market bootlegs (Yes, I am asking aloud if they might be in on it) to the people who cannot afford to
enjoy the deluxe movie experience.
They look at us as losers, a negligible group on the margins of society and would rather we be kept out of their shiny cineplexes, lest our BO offend
the other patrons or we try to pester them for spare change.
Piracy is a thorny issue in the Philippines. I think very few here can be holier–than–thou and say they haven't bought a pirated game, bootleg DVD or
other counterfeit good at some point. Yet most of us agree that piracy is acrime.
Read my Infotech article "Game piracy may be financing other crimes: ESA exec," based on my e–mail interview with Ric Hirsch, senior vice
president for intellectual property enforcement of the Entertainment Software Association. ESA is the US industry association representing the world's
biggest game publishers, and is the owner and operator of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

Written and directed by one of the greatest exploitation directors of all time, Jack Hill, Coffy is just one of many examples of the genre legend's fine
work. The film stars the great Pam Grier in the titular role of Coffy, who promises to take out local drug pushers after her eleven–year–old sister is
hospitalized after shooting up some bad heroin.
Coffy uses her sexuality to take her revenge – even pretending to be drugged up and looking for some action – as she lures unsuspecting scum to their
deserving demise. There's plenty of sex mixed in with some great action via Coffy's shotgun, but Coffy as a film is still played straight, opting to
concentrate as much on the exploitation elements as it does the characters and story. This is a true testament to the respect Hill had for the movie he
was making.
The character of Coffy is sexy, deadly, and smart, all the elements that make for a great revenge film character. Coffy is the film that put Grier on the
exploitation map, and even though she's a little rough around the edges performance wise, she remains highly entertaining, especially in how well she
delivers Hill's fantastic dialogue.

The Movie ' The Demand For Self Reflexivity '
The horror genre has tended to receive little critical success throughout its history. It is one of the genres who relies on its audience to both decide
how they're going to develop future texts and mediums, as well as the subject that they will focus on. The fact that it has been around for a long time
makes the new developing genre of comedy/horror understandable, as a way to both reflect on the generic tropes that have become second nature, as
well as provide a new viewing experience. The demand for self–reflexivity can be seen in various social media and fan outcries whereby audiences
constantly belittle or ridicule their most beloved genre. They focus on the classic elements of the genre, and how widespread they become throughout
each movie, therefore commenting on how those films made to be scary have become more comical than anything else. Since the rise in these
activities, Hollywood creators have taken the same approach as a way of both paying homage and mocking the genre, in addition to creating
relatability to the viewers and their criticisms. Two films that emulate this are the 2009 Hollywood hit Zombieland and the Swedish Cult Film Dead
Snow. Through an analysis of these two, and their commentary on horror film themes and characteristics, the idea of fandom interaction and
interpretation will be seen as having a strong influence of the genre. Moreover, it will illustrate how the new shift from the pure generic manifestation
of the genre has assisted in, not only

Movie Review: Sense And Sensibility Essay
Movie Review: Sense and Sensibility
Ang Lee, who directed, and Emma Thompson, who adapted the screenplay, have done an excellent job of bringing Jane Austen's Victorian novel, Sense
and
Sensibility, to the movie screen. The movie's collection of actors are a joy to watch as they bring out the emotions of an otherwise polite and reserved
era in time. The production work is top notch with bright, cascading photography that sets a romantic "I wish I was there" setting. The
purpose of the Sense and
Sensibility is to bring out the romance in all of us and show us that Austen's philosophy of love exists today as much as it did two centuries ago.

Kate Winslet plays the wild, fatally romantic Marianne who cannot control her feelings. Opposite her is the experienced Emma Thompson who plays
the reserved, intelligent Eleanor who is far more sensitive than she ever lets on.
These two sisters embark on a romantic adventure that finds them searching for the right man. The two actors compliment each other with their
opposite nature which balances the story perfectly.
Yet, as wonderful as these two characters are, Alan Rickman's Brandon is the core of Sense and Sensibility. His performance is eloquent and
beautifully controlled but you can tell the torment he fights inside. His voice may be confident and steady, but his eyes alert you to his true emotions.
Brandon's heartache touches you at the core but this heartache makes him more regal because of his perseverance.
Hugh Grant compliments this array of actors by giving the film some classical slapstick comedy. He fits perfectly against the reserved Emma
Thompson who will occasionally bring out that wide smile after one of Grant's humorous anecdotes. Grant brings just enough charisma to his character
of
Edward to bring a little excitement to the movie.
Although the film did not need use the blockbuster special effects of more recent movies, they satisfy the needs of the movie and there are no errors

Film Review : ' Halloween '
Slasher films have been produced and released since the 1970s, with the most famous slasher film being 'Halloween' (1974), which is recorded as the
'highest–grossing independent film of all time.' [1] John Carpenter provided the original template to slasher films that have been re–used again and
again in its most popular period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Slasher films involve a killer who hunts down a bunch of teenagers and kills
them graphically. Victims are usually young adults or teenagers who are isolated and can't call for help. Most of the films begin with the murder of a
female and end in one female survivor who outwits the killer. Women in slasher films are exposed to acts of extreme violence, sexualised by men and
believed to be in need of saving. Mark Jancovich stated that "it may be useful to make a distinction between the beauty and the beast in the horror film"
suggesting that women should be beautiful whilst the beast is gruesome and frightening. [2]
Other films such as 'Friday the 13th' (1980) 'The Cabin in the Woods' (2012) and 'Scream' (1997). By comparing a mixture of old and more recent
slasher films that involve similar storylines helps build an understanding on why only females seem to prevail and men fall at the last hurdle. Using a
variety of theories that explore the representation of women and being able to contradict ideas.
An essential element in slasher films is the 'final–girl' – this refers to the "last woman alive to confront the

The film is based on a true story of a 70–year–old angler, who killed four women between August and September 2007 in Bosung.
Hyun–ah is a young actress who travels to the countryside with a director who has promised her a role in his next film. Eventually, they stop in a

Descriptive Essay About Love
I believe in going out on Saturday nights. I believe in the frost from my breath visible the cold air, the squish in my soaked shoes from inches of
rain, and the hair on our arms raising from fear of the zombies being paid to scare us in the haunted house. I wouldn't change the rain hitting against
my windbreaker or the cold sweat for anything. Okay, I know what you're asking yourself: Am I about to read another cliche, teenaged romance?
No, this isn't a story of how I met my boyfriend or a proclamation of my love, this is about the cold, hard truth: life is unpredictable and you can't do
anything about it. You constantly think you've got your life all planned out. Suddenly, you're blindsided and you don't know what to do; but, I know
exactly what to do. My thoughts throughout these three dates might give you a big step in the right direction, if you let them. For our first date, he

Halloweens thereafter. Newsflash, I'm still alive. I survived through him pulling up into my driveway and through my mother shaking his hand. I felt

Django Unchained Sparknotes
Quentin Tarantino's movies are best known for their disjointed narratives and romanticized depictions of violence. Django Unchained is no exception.
However, Django Unchained does provide an interesting example of how thoughtful approaches to diegetic and non–diegetic sounds, the narrative
frame, and a character's point of view can keep an audience interested for over 2 hours of runtime. To start off,Quentin Tarantino gave much attention to
detail in his diegetic sounds. By including crickets chirping, floorboards creaking, bullets ricocheting off multiple surfaces, and, of course, blood
splatter, Tarantino truly brings his audience into the old American west. Another example of diegetic sounds in thefilm is when Dr. Schultz is waiting

By telling the story from Django's perspective, Quentin Tarantino not only explores Django's past with Broomhilda, but also wraps the audience up
in his experience by using subtle changes in filming. For example, Django's flashbacks of Broomhilda being punished are faded in color to show
how little he remembered of the moment in his panicked state. Broomhilda takes up a majority of the scenes composition and only small portions of
these memories have the slave owners in them. When the slave owners are shown however, they are usually towering above Django. In another scene,
Django is tied upside down, watching a man heat up a knife to castrate him. His horror is clearly shown through the shaky sideways camera angle that
sways with the ropes he is tied up with. In conclusion, Django Unchained has plenty of examples for how these aspects of film can affect an audience.
Quentin Tarantino's use of obscure cut offs in non–diegetic music, a non–lineal narrative frame, and off–centered camera angles make Django
Unchained a perfect example of how attention to detail in these key elements can turn a good film into a great

The Living Dead
The 1970s represented a truly diverse time in the history of horror cinema. This was a reflection, perhaps, of how life was growing more complex
in the 1970s, with competing problems pulling audiences towards different fears. Some horror films in the 1970s were revisionary, based on the
fresh principles of a freer, more personal cinema. Other horrors were merely old resurrections and variations of monsters who had appeared on the
silver screen, in one form or another, since the 1930s and 1940s. Nevertheless, following the path of Night of the Living Dead, most low–budget horror
films of the early 1970s depicted the raw social and sexual conflicts. For example, films such Wes Craven's Last House on the Left (1972) shares the

The possessed child levitates off her bed, spews green vomit, turns her head around backwards, and masturbates with a crucifix while screaming a

Exorcist was one of the most profitable movies of the decade. The Exorcist was set in Washington DC and released at the height of the Nixon

early in the film, we see Chris MacNeil (mother of Regan MacNeil) on the set of a campus anti–war protest. Meanwhile, we also see old Father Martin
has been living in Woodstock, New York, presumably trying to expel the evil spirits of its countercultural demons. The film also represented the tense
political anxieties of the 1970s. The climax, with the girl saved but the priests dead, strongly suggested that the battle between good and evil as the
film defined it had ended in an exhausting and uneasy draw. This example can be a reference to the United States' stalemate and withdraw from the
Vietnam War in the 1970s. It was a very exhausting war for American troops and uneasy success. Accordingly, The Exorcist inspired many horror films
throughout the decade and beyond. For instance, The Omen (1976) used certain ideas from The Exorcist to describe the birth of the antichrist to the

"Born on the Fourth of July"
This book was incredible! In all truth this was the first book I have ever read cover to cover. The book, by Ron Kovic, as compared to the film, by
Oliver Stone, had some impressive similarities. Both the book and the film did a great job of portraying Ron's childhood in Massapequa, Long Island.
From the little league games to playing war in the woods, leading charges and setting ambushes. This was especially well done in the movie, and
exactly as I pictured them while reading the book. The time that he spent in Mexico was well defined in the book as well as in the film. While there

His parents were also a lot more concerned with him going in the film than they were in the book, especially his mother. While in the book Kovic
makes it extremely clear that the most influential reason for him joining the Marines was because of the movies he saw as a boy, specifically the
"Sands of Iwo Jima" and "To Hell and Back". He loved the way that Hollywood had glamorized the battles and the wars. When he thought of war that
was what he thought about, John Wayne making a stand, taking out Japs and Nazi's with quick shots from the hip, all these things. No innocent people
were hurt, the hero always came home and that hero was loved and applauded when he got there. What Kovic found out was that these ideas were
indeed influenced by Hollywood. The hero seldom comes home, and during these times he was not greeted by screaming fans but by "hippies" that
protested his involvement.
It also seemed that the film did not do a great job of portraying the deplorable conditions of the veteran's hospitals. Sure they showed some of the
crude parts, but for the amount of the book that was dedicated to exposing what was going on in the VA hospitals the film did not seem to express it.
From what I can tell Oliver Stone did an incredible job making this movie. There were a few discrepancies between the book and the film, but on the

Take The Wicker Man Analysis
Sometimes it's hard to define a particular horror movie's genre, but in an attempt to sort through the confusion, I'm going to provide an explanation of
both the basic genres in horror, of which there are about 4 with closely related branches in their family tree. Often horror movies tend to fuse different
film genre elements together to create a horrific masterpiece, or just something awful to watch that ends in disaster. I'm not talking about the movie plot
itself, but those failed attempts at crafting masterful cinema. Take the Wicker Man, for instance. This film includes elements of psychological horror,
fantasy, macabre, thriller, and even exploitation horror.
Basic Horror Genres
Creature Features – Creature features include, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Exploitation Horror – Exploitation horror films generally exhibit blood, guts, and gore for the sake of provoking a shocking reaction in these horrific
movies. Splatter flicks (I Spit on Your Grave) are included in this genre, often along with cannibal (We Are What We Are), sexual deviancy (A Serbian
Film), murderous cult (Bless the Child), and backwoods psycho motifs (House of 1,000 Corpses & the Devils' Reject) running through them.
Urban Legends – Often urban legends come in the form of a horror anthology, which is a set of stories that can be related on unrelated that are
typically short and told by a person in a position of wisdom, such as Jud Crandall in Pet Cemetary, who is a very elderly, local man who provides
information that to live becomes quite valuable to Dr. Creed, as a new town resident.
Urban legends aren't always a story told in an anthology form. Often, a good urban legend or horrific folktale has enough detail to be a decent horror
story on it's own. Lizzie Borden Took an Axe and the spinoff Lifetime Series, The Lizzie Borden Chronicles are good

Horror Narrative Essay
The horror genre has many lessons to teach us as an audience although being the genre most connected with that of ridiculousness. It is regularly
associated with the reaction it seeks from its audience; both emotional and physical. In cinema success is measured by terrifying chills, bloody deaths
and the volume of the audiences scream. The appeal of horror narrative in literature, film and theatre lies in the pleasures it associates with fear,
suspense and terror; no matter what it is trying to convey to the audience. Even when writers layer the genre with academic thoughts on psychology,
theology and the world in which we live in, horror remains the primary outlet to examine the notions of dread, uncertainly, mysterious and the abject....

Films such as 'Carrie' (DePalma 1976), 'Misery' (Reiner 1990), 'Evil Dead' (Raimi 1981), 'The Exorcist' (Friedkin 1973), 'The Birds' (Hitchcock 1963)
have all been made into stage productions; treading the boards as a Broadway Musical or as serious drama. These adaptations have gained cult
followings and mixed reviews.
In 2014 the London theatre scene will be dominated by horror on stage. Productions of 'Fatal Attraction' (Dearden 2014), 'American Psycho'

is extremely intensified because it is live. The question for the stage though is how do we adapt iconic horror from screen to stage without the magic of
high expensive technical effects?
Horror on stage could be said to date back to the Ancient Greeks and their tales of incest, murder and revenge, only using the role of the messenger as
narrator to the horrors that happened off stage. In modern times, however, we only need to look to Paris and the Théâtre du Grand–Guignol, which
presented explicit revenge tales from the late 1800s to the mid–1900s. The plays placed emphasis on

Gender Depiction in Horror Films
There has been a large variety of horror films produced throughout the last fifty years. People are always going to be frightened and scared by
different types of horror films. But, what type of horror film scares more people, and were men or women more frightened by these horror films?
Each one of the horror films had its own agenda to frighten its audience using several different methods of horror. Some of these methods were more
so directed at the female audience than the male audience. Most horror movies show the female as being vulnerable, because in real life females are
defenseless against monsters.

Are women singled out to be killed more in slasher–films?
The first big stalker film stalker film to come out was John Carpenter?s Halloween in 1978. Halloween took a reported $325,000 to be made and
grossed over $80 million world wide up until 1987. This gave Halloween one of the highest proportional returns in film history (Waller, p. 87). The
first film to copy its narrative and cinematic structure was Friday the 13th . I believe that younger community and women are the target market for
stalker films like Halloween. Vera Dika writes, ??R–rated films were frequented by adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, and these films of
excessive violence against women found an audience that was 55 percent female? (Waller, p. 87). Horror movies portray women as vulnerable a lot of

effectively influence the portrayal and development of characters in the film.
In Strictly Ballroom, Luhrman uses many different camera angles and lighting techniques to exaggerate scenes, settings and even characters'

him as he dances, drawing the audience to watch him. This happens whenever Scott dances and it shows the audience that Scott has a sense of purity
and that he is the protagonist of the film. Luhrman uses low angle shots when Scott and Fran are dancing at the end of the film, this is a good
technique used so the audience can see them dancing and also gives the audience the impression that they are dominate and confident. Another
character who is a good example of camera angles and film techniques being used on them to portray their personality is Barry Fife. Barry is a mean
character and Luhrman uses dark, reddish lighting to make him seem evil.

Bonilla's point that movies are a reflection of the time period of which it was made and Django Unchained was intended to serve that role. Although
Django Unchained had a strong anti–slavery message, many critics felt the film did not address the racial issues that are still present in America. The
revenge plot in Inglorious Basterds was unequivocally anti–Nazi, with its plethora of burned swastikas and slain Nazi's; Tarantino made it very clear

This character began to appear in the 1930's, at the same time that an audio component was introduced into cinema. The audience was not however
interested in the voice of the vamp but rather for her appearance and sex appeal. She was often depicted as exotic and sensual. As Tara Osorio writes,
"In early cinema, Hollywood represented Latinas as ignorant, and valued their striking appearance and figure rather than their intelligence, character,
and personalities." (Tara Osorio) With the introduction of musicals into cinema, there were many opportunities for vamp roles. There were three
particular women in early cinema who were infamous for portraying the vamp character. Carmen Miranda, Dolores Del Rio, and Lupe Velez were
typecast in such roles and were seen in the majority of films produced in these decades.
This character represented an image that was offensive and insulting to many. The character did not have many diverse elements and was a rather
one–dimensional figure. It was even more damaging when you take into account that the same role was repeated, often by the same actress in a

instead of dominated side characters. In horror genre women are the ones fighting against evil and men are the ones dying trying to help these
heroines. Or perhaps the horror genre uses heroines to differ it self from hero dominant action genre. Or maybe horror films were created to represent
the ultimate horror of the dominant masculine society: a strong woman who can survive by herself. This essay will analyse genders used in
contemporary horror genre and it will delve in to the difference of masculinity and femininity presented in present horror films. ... Show more content

Reason for that might be purely economical, when the monster stays alive, the sequels can be made. Also the society's social order can handle the
death of male monsters. If the male monster dies entirely, it would mean that females had won the battle of sexes.
Contemporary horror film's heroines' power and independency keeps on growing when society it represents gets more liberal. For example in the
Scream films (1996, 1997, 2000) female protagonist was highly independent and equal to challenge male monster. The heroine has grown from victim
to almost masculine fighter. The heroine can be called masculine, but she still has the feminine touch, that got her in trouble in first place, in her. Even
in her final fight she still struggles between strength and fears. The final girl can not loose her vulnerability, because it would take away the element of
horror from the film. It can also be argued that masculine society can not handle the death of women. Women give birth so if they died it would be the
end of society.
In contemporary horror films the traditional gender qualities have shifted. Female protagonist has masculine elements in her behavior, like has to act
logically to beat the monster. The male monster on the other hand has feminist features in his behavior (Clover 1999, p. 203). The male monsters often
have some kind of psychological trauma as catalysis on their actions. The male monsters often look funny and they were masks to cover their

Movie Analysis : Dog Soldiers
A film that I enjoy and constantly revisit is an English horror comedy film, Dog Soldiers. The reason why this film is worth watching is because of
the effective visual elements, unpredictable plot, and the realistic special effects used to portray the werewolves in the movie.
This film is about a platoon of British soldiers sent on a mission to train with a group of British Special Air Service (SAS) soldiers in the Scottish
Highlands. Soon, the viewers discover that the SAS forces have been slaughtered by an unseen enemy; werewolves. The British soldiers are later
chased into an abandoned house, where they hold out for the rest of the movie. The werewolves repeatedly assault the house, while the soldiers fight
them off to survive for as long as possible until they can carry out an effective escape plan. An element that adds comic relief to this film is the use of
popular culture references, which are placed into the film through many ways; whether it is in the names of characters or dialogue in the film. Films
like Evil Dead, Star Trek, and Zulu, and famous people like H.G. Wells and Bruce Campbell are referenced throughout the film, either for comical
effect or to reference popular culture past and present. Speaking of popular culture, the film also brings to light Germany and England's soccer rivalry
by bringing up references to soccer, constantly talking about a soccer game between England and Germany, and also giving a scene of the scores from
the England–Germany

Cultural Changes In Rear Window
As our culture changes so do the films we see. If we look at films and their remakes decades later, it is easy to see the changes in our culture.
Between the time of the film Rear Window was released in 1954, under direction of Alfred Hitchcock, and the 2007 film Disturbia, directed by D.J.
Caruso, our country has experienced many cultural changes over those 53 years we have seen an increase in violence, huge advancement in
technology, and the increased use of sexuality, because of the media coverage of the Vietnam War, the inventing of the microchip and computer,
and the end of the Hays Code in 1968. In Rear Window and Disturbia, both Jeff, played by James Stewart in Rear Window and Kale, played by Shia
Lebeouf in Disturbia have been forced to remain indoors, and because of extreme boredom they have taken to spying on their neighbors to pass the
time. While observing their neighbors they see something strange from one of the men in their neighborhood. Kale and Jeff become convinced that
their neighbor is a killer, played by David Morse in Disturbia and Raymond Burr in Rear Window. They also convince their friends of this. They end
up trying to find a way to obtain evidence to use against the suspected killer. They become obsessed with trying to catch the killer in the act, until they
realize that they aren't the only ones watching.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The world would forever change in 1958, when Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce invented the first integrated circuit, also known as the micro–chip.
Without this invention there wouldn't be any cellphones, laptops, high–definition televisions, or I–pods. Which also means there would be no Google,
Apple, Microsoft, or many of the major technology companies we have today, that have innovated our world. In the two films Rear Window and
Disturbia, you can see many examples of the differences in technology resulting from there

Compare And Contrast Drive And The Avengers
To What Degree The films Drive and The Avengers are two strikingly different films that display violence in two different lights. In The Avengers
violence is portrayed in a fun, entertaining way that doesn't cause anxiety or apprehension while Drive, on the other hand, portrays violence with
intense emotion and realistic violence. These differences are evident throughout both of the films before, during, and after violent actions that take
place in the story. One of the significant differences in both of these films is how violence is initiated. In The Avengers violence is often treated as
the right thing to do, occurs with lots of foreshadowing, and the characters enter this violence jovially. During the middle of the final battle while
New York is being demolished, the Avengers have time to stand in a circle posing. As the heroes all leave their "huddle", the Hulk gives the audience
a big grin then proceeds to smash multiple Chitauri (Loki's soldiers) into walls, throw them from buildings, and knock them off of their flying vehicles.
In no instance does the audience asks... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Violence is shown as something that is uncontrollable and somber. The main character's efforts to escape his violent life include a personal list of
rules, which he lays out in the opening scene of the movie. This list of rules includes no guns and he only waits 5 minutes as he assists as a
getaway driver. His expectation that a list of rules will allow him to escape the violence is quickly dampened when The Driver agrees to help
Standard pay off his debt with Cook. Everything was going according to plan until someone from inside of a rinky–dink pawnshop shot Standard in the
neck as he was walking back to the car. The violence in Drive is extremely sudden, monologue does not precede the violence and the audience is left
with a depiction much more akin to real world

Gothic Horror : Frankenstein And Dracula
It's strange trying to think about these original film properties–Frankenstein and Dracula, respectively–as serious pictures, void of camp and cheese.
However, most of this comes from age. It's interesting then, watching the Hammond–era films, and trying to view them as anything remotely serious.
They aren't. However, they do, at times, manage to disguise themselves as such. In reality, these movies are no Rosemary's Baby, but rather the birth of
a new brand of gothic horror–the gore filled, B–movie, spin–off franchise films; a weird series of twisted exploitation reboots, upping the ante and
upping the ridiculous names. The two things that immediately came to mind when watching these films is the obvious influence they had on the work
of Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro, and Kate Bush's song "Hammer Horror" – I admire both artists greatly, so I went in the Hammerverse with
my eyes wide open. In regards to the evolution Terence Fischer took the genre into, it could be said that grabbed horror by the haunches and pulled
into a new, appalling era. Author Sinclair McKay, writing for The Telegraph, describes the reception for the early Hammer films, "Indeed, when the
Hammer Horrors first appeared with The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957 the critics rose up like a torch–bearing mob, horrified by the (minimal) shots
of blood. The word "Hammer" became synonymous with the shocking limit of cinematic nastiness." Taking that into consideration, one could surmise
that, while quite

The Development Of The Horror Genre Throughout The Years

  • 1. The Development Of The Horror Genre Throughout The Years Makhi Hughes Section 5 15 November, 2016 Final Semester Paper The Development of the Horror Genre Throughout the Years "Both horror and science fiction explore the boundaries of what is means to be human (Belton, 272)." This is done by emphasizing the dilemmas of the figures who straddle the border of human and non–human (Belton, 273). Horror and Sci–fi contain narratives that take on a form of a search for knowledge that will enable the human race to overcome any obstacle that involves a supernatural force (Belton, 273); the story lines require a search or journey to resolve the issue. Horror and Sci–fi often overlap when there is a monster featured in a sci–fi film; or when a horror film is set in the future (Belton, 271). The two differ in purpose, horror, a sub–genre for sci–fi, was created to generate fear through a figure of a monster or supernatural being. While Sci–fi has a chief purpose of focusing on science and reasoning (Belton, 272). The development of both genres is created to a number of works done throughout the years. The improvement of special effects, influences from the original masters of suspense, camera angles, and heightened elements of the horror film genre has allowed it to maintain its popular demand amongst audiences for decades. Although Native Americans have passed legends about werewolves, evil spirits, and monsters from tribe to tribe since before the 14th century, it was not until this time that spiritual literature emerged with the ... Destry Rides Again, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, and the Fall of the Hollywood Studio System Thomas Schatz cites the 1950's as the inevitable end of the Hollywood film studio system, with the signs appearing as early as the height of the second World War (472). However, the seeds of discontent and disintegration within the system were apparent as soon as the late 1930's, exemplified in such films as Destry Rides Again (1939, George Marshall) and Mr. Smith Goes ToWashington (1939, Frank Capra). The production of these two films and the paths down which they led their star (James Stewart), directors (at least Frank Capra), and studios (Universal and Columbia, respectively) are evidence of the decline of the studio system. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The balance of power was thus tipped in favor of the individual filmmakers. These films also served to launch James Stewart's career as a successful leading man (usually next to a star leading lady), particularly in the western genre (The Man From Laramie, The Naked Spur, Winchester 73), as a patriotic all–American (It's a Wonderful Life, again with Capra), and working with and as an independent (his infamous contract with Universal and his work with Alfred Hitchcock, both in the 1950's). Destry Rides Again and Mr.Smith Goes To Washington also raise issues regarding the value placed on dramatic and outright patriotic films in comparison to the value placed on films which serve as mere entertainment. While Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is an overtly political film, Destry Rides Again, in its own way, is highly political and both films reveal that the United States of 1939 was a politically charged nation preparing itself subconsciously to take part in a worldwide war. During the second half of the 1930s, Universal came under a completely new ownership. The traditional owners, the Laemmle family, lost Universal at this time after leading it up and down the mountains and valleys of success and failure. The new owner, J. Cheever Cowdin, set up Robert H. Cochrane and Charles R. Rogers in charge of Universal. They kept the company going, sometimes by thin margins, until the very end of the 1930s ... • 3. Gone Girl From the origin of the Noir genre (although originally shot in all black in white) the dark content has still remained the focal point of the genre. (Conard, 2007, p.1–4). Now called neo–noir, the genre encompasses a broad variety of films linked together by specific qualities. Those qualities often revolve around the concept of disorienting the viewer (p.1–4). From inverted stereotypical values, the "bad" guys getting away with the crimes committed, and the overall twisted, dark plot line reflected in the neo–noir genre all can be encompassed by the disorienting aspect (p.1–4). Gone Girl is a spitting image of what the neo–noir genre represents. The film revolves around the disappearance of Amy Dunne, who is the wife of Nick. Alternating between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher, reflects the definition of a neo–noir film. Through this essay, the disorientation of the viewer, which is a key aspect of the neo–noir genre, will be analyzed through the cinematography, the flipped traditional values, and the format of the film. The beginning half of the film tries to convince the reader that Nick has to be the person responsible for Amy's disappearance. The alternating perspectives of Nick and Amy make Amy appear to be a perfect woman. One of the first scenes of Nicks shows him going into a bar. This day is the day that Amy disappears, coincidentally the day of their fifth wedding anniversary, although, at this point, Nick does not know. He walks into the bar, around late morning, early afternoon time, and starts a conversation with his sister. He asks for a bourbon at a very early hour and begins to talk about his wife. The way Nick talks about his wife makes her appear to be a hindrance in his life. He is perpetuating the stereotype of a male in this moment. The fact that he is drinking at such an early hour whilst complaining about his wife is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Movie Analysis : Dog Soldiers A film that I enjoyed and I constantly revisit is an English horror comedy film, Dog Soldiers. The reason why this film is worth watching is because of the realistic visual effects used to portray the werewolves in the movie, effective visual elements, and the unpredictable plot. This film is about platoon of British soldiers sent on a mission to train with a group of British Special Air Service (SAS) soldiers in the Scottish Highlands. Soon the viewers discover that the SAS forces have been slaughtered by an unseen enemy, werewolves. The British soldiers are later chased into an abandoned house, where they hold out for the rest of the movie. They are continuously assaulted by the werewolves, which are slowly introduced as the film progresses, in order to keep the viewer guessing how the werewolves will look. The viewer is eventually given a full view of the werewolves throughout a few scenes of the film. Slowly, the werewolves wipe out the platoon, until there are only two soldiers left. Also, during the timespan between the start and end of the film, secrets that offer a plot twist are revealed by an SAS commander who survived the attack on the SAS forces, which reveal the reason why the British Soldiers were sent on the mission in the first place. An element that adds comic relief to this film is the use popular culture references, which are placed in the film in many ways, whether it is in the names of characters or dialogue in the film. Not only do the characters not take themselves seriously, they also don't take horror movies seriously. A day after the first murders take place, Sidney Prescott receives a cryptic phone call. The mysterious caller asks her why she doesn't like horror films and she replies, "What's the point? They're all the same: some stupid killer stalking some big–breasted girl who can't act and is always running up the stairs when she should be going out the front door. It's insulting." As an audience member, I realize that this skeptical"and often accurate"view of horror movies is a message directly from the film's writer and director (Riptov 86). Later in the film, when Sidney suggests that the killer might still be on the loose, her best friend Tatem replies, "Don't go there, Sid. You're starting to sound like one of those Wes Carpenter flicks." Up to this point, the movie rental companies (with the exception of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery) have able to cope with rivalry, the bargaining power of the movie studios, and the competitive pressures from substitutes. It would not, however, come as a shock if the bargaining power of the movie studios begins to squeeze the profitability of VOD/Internet streaming providers as they demand bigger fees in return for granting streaming access to the libraries of movie titles. The dismal financial performance of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery confirm that competitive conditions for earning attractive profits are pretty tough. Netflix, on the other hand, is doing very, very well from the standpoints of revenue growth and financial performance. All this violence portrays many things about the film and about what Tarentino is trying to suggest. He manifests these gangster characters with such disregard to living, going to jail, and swearing simply to show the audience how he believes criminals act. Quentin therefore tries to present a criminal lifestyle as it most likely is, not worth it. He suggests that a life of crime and violence leads to dead ends such as jail, death, or predicaments such as having an informant on a well–planned out diamond heist. Quentin Tarentino uses tracking shots that also leave his mark on the movies he directs. The fact that it has been around for a long time makes the new developing genre of comedy/horror understandable, as a way to both reflect on the generic tropes that have become second nature, as well as provide a new viewing experience. The demand for self–reflexivity can be seen in various social media and fan outcries whereby audiences constantly belittle or ridicule their most beloved genre. Film Review : ' Halloween ' Slasher films have been produced and released since the 1970s, with the most famous slasher film being 'Halloween' (1974), which is recorded as the 'highest–grossing independent film of all time.' [1] John Carpenter provided the original template to slasher films that have been re–used again and again in its most popular period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Slasher films involve a killer who hunts down a bunch of teenagers and kills them graphically. Victims are usually young adults or teenagers who are isolated and can't call for help. Most of the films begin with the murder of a female and end in one female survivor who outwits the killer. Women in slasher films are exposed to acts of extreme violence, sexualised by men and believed to be in need of saving. Hyun–ah is a young actress who travels to the countryside with a director who has promised her a role in his next film. Eventually, they stop in a village to eat. Unfortunately, the seemingly peaceful and polite owner, Pan–gon is paranoid murderer who, almost immediately, kills the director and chains the girl in a cage in his basement. Her sister, Hyun–jung, who is worried when she does not communicate with her foe some, goes to the village and starts searching for her. The local police officers show no will to help her. She, however, starts suspecting Pan–gon after a while. Kim Sung–hong does not delay at all in portraying what the movie is all about, since, by the end of the first quarter, Pan–gon has revealed his true nature. From that point on, the script revolves around Hyun–ah's tortures in his hands, and Hyung–jung's desperate efforts to find her. • 26. Descriptive Essay About Love I believe in going out on Saturday nights. I believe in the frost from my breath visible the cold air, the squish in my soaked shoes from inches of rain, and the hair on our arms raising from fear of the zombies being paid to scare us in the haunted house. I wouldn't change the rain hitting against my windbreaker or the cold sweat for anything. Okay, I know what you're asking yourself: Am I about to read another cliche, teenaged romance? No, this isn't a story of how I met my boyfriend or a proclamation of my love, this is about the cold, hard truth: life is unpredictable and you can't do anything about it. You constantly think you've got your life all planned out. Suddenly, you're blindsided and you don't know what to do; but, I know exactly what to do. My thoughts throughout these three dates might give you a big step in the right direction, if you let them. For our first date, he picked a haunted house. I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn't know if going out would be a one–time deal or if it would continue until the sun is melting your sneakers to the sidewalk and we're going out getting ice cream in Chicago. Heck, I could've ended up six feet under for the Halloweens thereafter. Newsflash, I'm still alive. I survived through him pulling up into my driveway and through my mother shaking his hand. I felt numb but maybe it was just the rain pelting against my windbreaker; maybe it was how cold the seat of his car was; maybe even the fear from the way he drives ... • 27. Django Unchained Sparknotes Quentin Tarantino's movies are best known for their disjointed narratives and romanticized depictions of violence. Django Unchained is no exception. However, Django Unchained does provide an interesting example of how thoughtful approaches to diegetic and non–diegetic sounds, the narrative frame, and a character's point of view can keep an audience interested for over 2 hours of runtime. To start off,Quentin Tarantino gave much attention to detail in his diegetic sounds. By including crickets chirping, floorboards creaking, bullets ricocheting off multiple surfaces, and, of course, blood splatter, Tarantino truly brings his audience into the old American west. Another example of diegetic sounds in thefilm is when Dr. Schultz is waiting for Mr. Candie to sign the papers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By telling the story from Django's perspective, Quentin Tarantino not only explores Django's past with Broomhilda, but also wraps the audience up in his experience by using subtle changes in filming. For example, Django's flashbacks of Broomhilda being punished are faded in color to show how little he remembered of the moment in his panicked state. Broomhilda takes up a majority of the scenes composition and only small portions of these memories have the slave owners in them. When the slave owners are shown however, they are usually towering above Django. In another scene, Django is tied upside down, watching a man heat up a knife to castrate him. His horror is clearly shown through the shaky sideways camera angle that sways with the ropes he is tied up with. In conclusion, Django Unchained has plenty of examples for how these aspects of film can affect an audience. Quentin Tarantino's use of obscure cut offs in non–diegetic music, a non–lineal narrative frame, and off–centered camera angles make Django Unchained a perfect example of how attention to detail in these key elements can turn a good film into a great ... • 28. The Living Dead The 1970s represented a truly diverse time in the history of horror cinema. This was a reflection, perhaps, of how life was growing more complex in the 1970s, with competing problems pulling audiences towards different fears. Some horror films in the 1970s were revisionary, based on the fresh principles of a freer, more personal cinema. Other horrors were merely old resurrections and variations of monsters who had appeared on the silver screen, in one form or another, since the 1930s and 1940s. Nevertheless, following the path of Night of the Living Dead, most low–budget horror films of the early 1970s depicted the raw social and sexual conflicts. Along with blockbusters as The Godfather (1972), The Sting (1973), and Jaws (1975), The Exorcist was one of the most profitable movies of the decade. The Exorcist was set in Washington DC and released at the height of the Nixon administration's engagement in the Watergate scandal. Throughout the film, there are various references to relating to the Vietnam–era. For example, early in the film, we see Chris MacNeil (mother of Regan MacNeil) on the set of a campus anti–war protest. Meanwhile, we also see old Father Martin has been living in Woodstock, New York, presumably trying to expel the evil spirits of its countercultural demons. The film also represented the tense political anxieties of the 1970s. The climax, with the girl saved but the priests dead, strongly suggested that the battle between good and evil as the film defined it had ended in an exhausting and uneasy draw. This example can be a reference to the United States' stalemate and withdraw from the Vietnam War in the 1970s. It was a very exhausting war for American troops and uneasy success. Accordingly, The Exorcist inspired many horror films throughout the decade and beyond. The book, by Ron Kovic, as compared to the film, by Oliver Stone, had some impressive similarities. Both the book and the film did a great job of portraying Ron's childhood in Massapequa, Long Island. From the little league games to playing war in the woods, leading charges and setting ambushes. This was especially well done in the movie, and exactly as I pictured them while reading the book. The time that he spent in Mexico was well defined in the book as well as in the film. While in the book Kovic makes it extremely clear that the most influential reason for him joining the Marines was because of the movies he saw as a boy, specifically the "Sands of Iwo Jima" and "To Hell and Back". He loved the way that Hollywood had glamorized the battles and the wars. When he thought of war that was what he thought about, John Wayne making a stand, taking out Japs and Nazi's with quick shots from the hip, all these things. No innocent people were hurt, the hero always came home and that hero was loved and applauded when he got there. What Kovic found out was that these ideas were indeed influenced by Hollywood. The hero seldom comes home, and during these times he was not greeted by screaming fans but by "hippies" that protested his involvement. It also seemed that the film did not do a great job of portraying the deplorable conditions of the veteran's hospitals. Sure they showed some of the crude parts, but for the amount of the book that was dedicated to exposing what was going on in the VA hospitals the film did not seem to express it. Take The Wicker Man Analysis Sometimes it's hard to define a particular horror movie's genre, but in an attempt to sort through the confusion, I'm going to provide an explanation of both the basic genres in horror, of which there are about 4 with closely related branches in their family tree. Often horror movies tend to fuse different film genre elements together to create a horrific masterpiece, or just something awful to watch that ends in disaster. I'm not talking about the movie plot itself, but those failed attempts at crafting masterful cinema. Take the Wicker Man, for instance. Urban Legends – Often urban legends come in the form of a horror anthology, which is a set of stories that can be related on unrelated that are typically short and told by a person in a position of wisdom, such as Jud Crandall in Pet Cemetary, who is a very elderly, local man who provides information that to live becomes quite valuable to Dr. Creed, as a new town resident. The appeal of horror narrative in literature, film and theatre lies in the pleasures it associates with fear, suspense and terror; no matter what it is trying to convey to the audience. The question for the stage though is how do we adapt iconic horror from screen to stage without the magic of high expensive technical effects? Horror on stage could be said to date back to the Ancient Greeks and their tales of incest, murder and revenge, only using the role of the messenger as narrator to the horrors that happened off stage. Contemporary horror film's heroines' power and independency keeps on growing when society it represents gets more liberal. For example in the Scream films (1996, 1997, 2000) female protagonist was highly independent and equal to challenge male monster. The heroine has grown from victim to almost masculine fighter. The heroine can be called masculine, but she still has the feminine touch, that got her in trouble in first place, in her. Even in her final fight she still struggles between strength and fears.
