1. This shot is a medium close up of The Master’s
face. This immediately tells the audience that he
has a lot of authority. He is given a lot of space on
the screen compared to Martha. In the
background we can see Martha with the guards
which shows the audience how females are
represented as she is so small compared to The
Master. This is a stereotypical representation
women as it shows her being less relevant and
similar to a prisoner.
This shot is a low angle. The angle shows how The
Master is placed at the top of the screen, looking
down at Martha, which shows how he is above
her in the hierarchy and how she is at the bottom,
meaning she lacks his respect. Although the
woman in the red dress is standing next to him,
she is no more than an object to him as she has
no expression and she does not say anything.
2. This shot is taken from a high angle as the camera is
facing down on her. It makes the audience look down
on her, this also makes them feel sorry for her as she
seems powerless against him and that she is almost his
slave. She is looking up at The Master which may make
him seem more powerful and in control as she
kneeling down to him as though he is a god like figure.
This mid shot is taken at eye level, which shows that
he is respected more as he is a man, and although he
has also been captured, he isn’t being degraded like
Martha who is usually filmed from a low high angle to
make the audience look down on her. This shows the
difference in how males and females are represented
as they are both on the same level, yet he is shown at
eye level.
3. Through editing, we are able to know when the
flash back happens as the screen fades to white,
this helps the audience become aware of the time
change and helps them to differentiate between
what is current and what is in the past.
The flash back scenes have also been filtered to look
different so that the audience know what is current
and what is from the past, the use of the filter also
gives the clips a more vintage look to help reinforce
the fact that clips are form the past
4. CGI has been used to show the transformation
of the doctor, the audience see a bright blue
light which implies something is happening, it
also shows the representation of males as he
was trapped behind bars and with the help of
Martha he is able to become him self again yet
the doctor is shown as powerful and the blue
light gives him an angelic effect.
This shot of Martha is taken at a high angle
which shows how she has progressed
through the clip as before she was always
shown in a low angle to make the audience
look down on her, however, now the high
angle shows how she is victorious and how
she was able to out smart The Master.
Which changes the stereotypical view of
women the audience were shown at the
start.
5. This mid long shot shows The Master is shown to be smaller
to signify him losing his power, the camera has also been
angled to look down on him to emphasise him losing his
power as the audience is shown to be looking down on him.
In this medium long shot women are again represented
regressively as we see one man holding a gun towards
the two women showing them as vulnerable. However
the stereotypical representation of men is being
subverted to as one man holds the gun up to another
man implying he is as vulnerable as the women.
6. This long shot shows the setting as well as the different
statuses that different genders have. Most of the men
are shown ‘upstairs’ looking down on the women
suggesting that women have a lower status giving them
a regressive representation. Due to the way the long
shot represents the genders we can see a negative
representation of gender
This long shot shows The Master losing his power as
he is positioned at the bottom of the screen and the
doctor is rising above him gaining his power back. The
blue light surrounding him also helps to reinforce the
audience that he is now more powerful than him
