4. Extinction is a hybrid of horror, sci-fi
and drama. It will be released in 2015.
Extinction is about two men, a young girl
and hatred that separates them. Something
happens to the two men and they have to
leave behind everything to protect their
loved ones.

6. The teaser trailer starts with the company involved in making the film. It cuts to the first
scene. The house looks very white and old. It fades to the next scene, which juxtaposes with
the previous scene. This scene is dull and dark. The score is constantly and the rhythm is slow
and regular. There is a voice over which talks about the weather forecast.
The next shot is in the same place as the first one. A man walks with a gun. A gun is a
convention of horror and this makes the audience worry. The medium shot of the man allows
us to examine him. There is also the first title.
7. The next scene is in the same house. The medium shot allows us to see the two people on
the sofa. We can see they are really cold, which links in with the voiceover. The second title
is shown with a young girl and a man. They are staring outside the window. This makes us
wonder what they are looking at. The short take of the man with blood (a convention of
horror) on his face grabs our attention because he is injured. The score fades.
After the short take, there are shots of people panicking and running away. This makes us
think about what is going on. Dark lighting is used and is a convention of horror. This makes
us pay attention to what is going on. There is screaming, which is a convention. This type of
sound has been used to create a tense atmosphere.

9. The house looks very
white and old. It fades
to the next scene, which
juxtaposes with the
previous scene. This scene
is dull and dark. In
typical horror films, there
are constant
comparisons
between lights. This
therefore means it is a
convention of horror.
The next shot is in the same house as the first one. A man
walks with a gun. A gun is a convention of thriller and
makes the audience worry and question why he has a
gun.
10. The short takes of the man with blood is a convention of horror. The blood is on his face,
which grabs our attention because he is injured. The short take is also a convention of
horror because it helps build tension and makes the audience feel terrified.
After the short take, there are shots of people panicking and running away. This makes us
wonder what is going on. Dark lighting is used and is a convention of horror. This makes
us pay extra attention to what is going on because it is difficult to see what is going on.
Another convention used is screaming. This type of sound has been used to create a tense
atmosphere.
11. There is a long shot of the
setting, which is a convention of
horror as it shows the setting.
Settings are significant as it
starts to build the mood and
atmosphere.
The over the shoulder shot makes the
audience wonder who the person is and
what she is doing there. This makes the
audience scared because they do not
know how the person looks like.
12. The score used in this trailer is a convention of
horror because it is tense and makes the audience
terrified. The volume and pace of the score varies,
depending on the tension created.
The medium shot allows us to see the
persons face. It seems as if she is cold.
The shot makes the audience scared
because we do not know whom she is
and why she was standing there. Making
the audience scared is one of the main
purposes of a horror.
13. What could I borrow/repeat?
Short takes – creates a tense and
mysterious atmosphere
Juxtaposition – increases the importance
of both shots
Dark lighting – the audience has no
choice but to pay close
attention
Score/music – the pace and volume is
usually in relation to the
actions that creates a
jumpy atmosphere.
