2. Clip starts with a close up of a male highlighting his importance/authority/strength. The close
up of the master is constantly referred back to through out the clip to show that he is the
most important and prominent character.
Close Up
3. Mid Shot
The women, Martha, in this shot is wearing masculine clothing, which relates closely to
army uniform, so infers that she is fighting for what she believes in. She has her fair tied
back, demonstrating that she is being stripped of her femininity in order to be strong.
The way she is dressed contradicts the female stereotype.
4. Women are presented in maid outfits to show they are inferior, and all men in the scene are
male, demonstrating how men are stereotypically the stronger sex. The mid shot enables
the audience to see the people order, and effectively their level of importance, starting
with the guard. The women are at the bottom of the hierarchy in this shot.
Mid Shot
5. Over the
shoulder
shot/Low
Angle
The low angle of this shot makes The Master look more powerful and dominant, as he is
standing on top of the stairs, and Martha is at the bottom. Martha I filmed from behind
to highlight that she is not seen as a threat by the Master, and that he has the status,
not her.
6. Close
Up/High
angle
Martha is made to kneel down, as if she is inferior, and is treated like a slave. Also it is
shot from above, in a high angle shot so that she looks lower down, and less important.
She is degraded and treated like a slave, and the type of shot reinforces this.
7. Shallow
Focus
Shot
This is shot in a shallow focus shot, as you can see the timer clearly in the background,
and the Master is blurred out in the fore ground, to show the audience the most important
part of the frame. The timer in the background can be seen counting down, but so you can
see the man clearly linked to this.
8. Zoom in
Shot
Despite the majority of women in the shot being the inferior ones, a man is also being
kept hostage, who is very dirty, which shows that he has gone o great length to try and
beat the Master, but he wasn't powerful enough. He has a gun pointed at him by a
fellow male, which shows who has the power in this shot.
9. Long Shot
This shot is important because it shows who is on top of the hierarchy, and who is the
bottom. The Master and his accomplishes are o the top of the stairs and Martha and
the women dressed as maids are on the bottom. The master is pointing at Martha with
his sonic screwdriver, which is really patronising and degrading as he is treating her
like a child.
10. Midshot
There is a women in a red dress, who is standing behind the Master, demonstrating
that she is essentially his possession. She is wearing a red dress which is very
sexualising and has connotations of love and promiscuity.. She is a blonde, white, slim
women, which is why she is being so objectified.
11. Colour
change
The colour of the shot flashes white to indicate that it is in my past – a flashback. This
effect makes it clear that the setting of the clip has changed, so that the audience
know that they are going back in time to watch something that has already happened.
12. During the flashback, there is a pan shot of all of the people listening to Martha speak.
This shows them all looking very dirty, and poor, and desperate for help. They all look in
awe, and very focused, which highlights that Martha’s words are very important.

13. Special effects are used in this clip,
to highlight how superior the doctor
is that he is rising up, in a field of
light, which makes him seem almost
magical. The light also demonstrates
that Doctor Who is a sci-fi TV show
as the doctor turns from a small old
man, back into himself, which is
clearly fiction.
Special
Effects
14. All the characters begin to feel
relieved as Martha’s plan works, and
therefore there are lots of close ups
of all the characters, which are very
quick shots, and demonstrate that
they are all feeling happy and a lot of
relief.
Quick Shots
15. The camera tilts from the top, downwards, when the master is walking down the stairs.
This shows hat he has been beaten and therefore has less power and authority than
before, which is why the camera is moving down, into a high angle shot. This makes
him look smaller, and shows that the doctor is above him, as he is looking up.
