Additionally, there are even more types of Pukulan found in various forms of dance music
(Abdullah, 2005). A summary of the different Pukulan specific to the Kompang Ezhar community is
shown in Figure 1 below:
Figure 1: A summary of the various types of Pukulan found in the Kompang Ezhar (Abdullah, 2005)
In Kompang, rhythm is mainly characterized by the interlocking of different parts divided within the
Kompang ensemble. Interlocking is basically done with two or more Kompangs playing
simultaneously, with one part playing the Basic beat which is usually the downbeats; another part
playing the Rhythm beat which is usually the off beats; and an additional part(s) playing the Leading
beat which is usually characterized by triplets or a syncopated rhythm that creates a unique
interlocking texture specific to the Malay Kompang musical genre (Hahril, 2010). In addition,
instrumentation is a musical element that is relatively fixed in Kompang; there is usually a group of
Kompangs playing together, and occasionally, accompanying voice.
1.3 Performance Context
In the Singaporean context, the Malay Kompang is usually seen performed at weddings and
celebratory ceremonies, or at traditional showcases. As the Kompang is usually performed in large,
open spaces, it

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Studio Band ' Essay
Adjusting to college is, as us students would put it, "wild." But, very few can say they had an
experience comparable Andrew Neiman from Damien Chazelle's Whiplash. As a freshman at the
Shaffer Conservatory (the fictitious best music school in the U.S.), Neiman happens into the best
Jazz ensemble in the whole school. "The Studio Band" is directed by Terence Fletcher, who is
unashamedly abusive to his students. During Neiman's first rehearsal, Fletcher catches him "off–
tempo" and responds by slapping him, hurling a chair at him, and verbally abusing him in front of
the whole class. Neiman, committed to never feeling that level of embarrassment again, responds by
practicing until his hands bleed. Through this intense treatment, he finds new drive in striving to
become one of the greatest drummers of his time. Neiman's drive transitions into obsession and his
relationship with Fletcher becomes increasingly toxic. Director Chazelle wanted to paint a picture of
a world he himself had lived. He shares his own life through the "ticking clocks of the rehearsal
rooms, the padded soundproofing of the practice booths, the trombonists emptying spit valves, the
popped blisters and bleeding hands – I might be able to examine how that world reflected America
as a whole." Chazelle gives us a "natural point of entry" (Smith 5) to invoke an idea that can
resonate deep inside all of us: passion. Some art aims to invoke emotionlessness in us by depicting
something completely unrelatable,

Creative Writing: The Musical
He had heard of people who play from the heart. Who can pick up an instrument and let all their
emotions free with no sheet music or chords to follow, and still make it sound crafted by the gods.
He'd heard of people sitting down with a cello in front of an audience and making the audience feel.
Levi had heard of people who play from the heart, but frankly, he didn't believe any of it. That was
all romanticized bullshit fit to play to the hearts of teens who believed music was some form of
magic that brought two lost souls together. It was limited to movies and romance novels found in
any YA section.
Levi believed in order, structure. He believed in the crisp sheet of music that sat in front of him on a

Levi doubted that statement had much truth behind it, there was a tuba player who was actually high
at the moment.
"And then you come in here, you disrespect me, you disrespect your peers. Get off my stage. Now."
Eren set his drum sticks down on the edge of his drum, put his hands in his pockets, and walked off.
In front of the stage was a few rows a chairs that usually held an audience of about 20 during
concerts, mostly made up of parents and the occasional grandparent cheering on their darling child
during a concert they were required to attend unless they wanted an F. Eren took the seat furthest
away from the stage and pulled his phone out of his pocket. Behind him the conductor let out a sigh
and held up her hand again.
"Take the pick up at measure 34." She seemed calmer this time, more collected. Normally after an
Eren incident she would be ruthless to the rest of the concert band until the bell rang.
"And Levi." He raised an eyebrow in return.

My Life As A Life
At times, I see my life as being stupidly stressful. I'm young, I want time to myself. Time where I
have nothing to do. Where I can take naps, eat a half–gallon of ice cream and become addicted to
some new television series. As a matter of fact, I lived that lifestyle once. To be honest, I absolutely
hated it. As stressful as days can be, with little to no pauses, I much prefer it than not keeping
busy.Time is so scarce, I try to make the most of it. More specifically by playing time, or rather,
playing drums. My hit–kit, as some rarely refer to it as, journey began when I was twelve years old.
In junior high school, I was a part of my schools jazz band. In high school, I was again a part of the
schools jazz band. In addition, I was in bands here and there, but didn't play out often. I also
auditioned and made it into the Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO) Jazz Ensemble. I even made
is as an alternate for New York State School Music Associate (NYSSMA) All State Jazz Ensemble.
Lastly, I was accepted and spent my first two semesters of college at Berklee College of Music.
However, as great as these experiences and opportunities were, they did not keep me nearly busy as
I am today with music. Actually, they really didn't keep me busy at all. Well, Berklee was an all
music college, but its not like I was playing gigs all the time. It was not until recently, within the
past year, that my adventures with drumming began to pick up. Arguably, to the point of where I'm

To Do Or Not To Play Argumentative Essay

To Play or Not to Play It seems that no matter what at some point in a child's life they wander up to
their parents and ask, "Mom, Dad, can I learn to play an instrument?" Whether or not it is the guitar,
drums, piano, or flute a child could possibly have the thought of wanting to learn how to play an
instrument. When Mom and Dad end up saying no to their child they should stop and realize that
when a child knows how to play a musical instrument it can help them out in many more ways than
they know (iDiva). Having a young kid learn an instrument can help develop better coordination,
build better concentration, help with stress relief, and enhance a child's intelligence, along with

Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach are some of the most creative people in the history of the World, and
what did they do? They played instruments. Playing a musical instrument for a child is a creative
pursuit (Caron). Parents are always pushing their children to be more and more creative, well
parents why not buy them an instrument and let their creativity be expressed? "Everybody is born
creative, but many people don't realize it because it's not encouraged in their early years (iDiva)."
Having your child play an instrument would let that creativity that is bundled up inside them, that
they did not even know they had, and would let it sore out. Look at the creativity that the guitarist in
the last thirty to forty years have. Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Angus Young are three
of the greatest guitarist. Imagine if their parents would have never bought them a guitar. Then some
of the best music ever would have never been written. It is the ultimate feeling someone can receive
when they are just playing along on an instrument and all of a sudden compose some sort of music.
When I'm playing my guitar just doing really nonsense chord progressions, or playing random riffs,
and I build a song on the guitar the feeling is unreal. Once that happens the only thought that goes
through my head is, "Whoa, I just made music on my own." I've been playing for about 8 years now
and that feeling never goes away. Along with

Jk Simmons And Character Clash
Tyler Christiansen/ Section A/ Whiplash/ Peter Stone
A young actor can learn a lot from the performances of JK Simmons and Miles Teller in Whiplash.
Throughout the film each actor clearly had an understanding of not only who their character was,
but what their character's overall objective was. Building character is essential to a great
performance and by watching this film I could easily tell each actor did the proper preparation it
took to get a better understanding who Fletcher and Andrew were. These actors are a great example
of what we, as actors, should be striving for when we begin to analyze a new character.
The chemistry between Simmons and Teller on screen was incredible, and I believe a huge portion
of that was due to their comprehension of their characters. A factor that played a great part between
these two characters was the idea of high status and low status. Fletcher is clearly the high status
character, holding the power to make or break Andrew's life–long dream. Simmons plays this part of
Fletcher quite clearly through his physical and vocal choices. His movement is very meticulous,
almost as if he's constantly thinking about every move he makes. His posture is tall and overbearing,

As an actor I tend to do really well in low status roles. It's difficult for me to play someone who's
intimidating, due to my smaller stature, and my hesitance when it comes to emotionally connecting
to my anger and letting myself let go and be big and bold. However I do excel at connecting
emotionally to anxiety or nervousness and I believe because my usual soft spoken voice it's much
easier for me to truthfully play a character like Andrew. Ideally I would like to be able to play both
of them and I think in the future I would be able to approach both roles with such honesty as

The Origins Of The Percussion Family
Examining the Origins of the Percussion Family
To get a clear view of the origins of the percussion family, one should first have to the ability to
classify the plethora of instruments. For the sake of this document we will use the broad
classification of Janissary instruments and non–Janissary instruments. The Janissary instruments
find their roots in the Turkish military bands of the Ottoman Empire. The term Janissary refers to the
Turkish Yeñi–çeri, or "new troops". Sultan Orkhan I, of the Ottoman Empire, created The
Janissaries, but his successor, Murad I, officially established the corps circa 1360's CE. They were
originally an elite corps of troops made up of the Sultan's loyal slaves. The corps eventually picked
up the use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is most likely the influence of the Crusades that would have brought Arabic culture, albeit in a
violent way, to Europe.
Timpani, as aforementioned, hold an intrinsically military tradition. Because of its use in the Turkish
armies, the Europe borrowed the instrument in its armies. These influences can be seen in the
earliest uses of timpani. The timpani that were taken from the Arabs were made into an essential
element of prestige for the nobility. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries both trumpeters and
kettle drummer were restricted to only those of high rank or nobility. This lead to the creation of an
exclusive guild to train the instrumentalists. This lead to a surplus of players, especially after the last
failed Siege of Vienna in 1683 CE. Due to this surplus, the Classical period, when timpani were
used on a regular basis, began to use timpani in a limited fashion. In combination with the trumpets,
the timpani mostly played rhythmically driving music. This is best observed in Handel's Messiah.
During the Hallelujah Chorus the trumpets and timpani can be easily heard playing the same
material. This pairing is not coincidental, both instruments had a high amount of military
background during the time of Handel. So, the pairing would have observed that military tradition,
but this military tradition followed the Eastern custom of pairing trumpet with timpani. It is
important to note that this trend among the Classical composers to use timpani

Analysis Of Darius Milhaud, A French Composer
When Africans were sold as slaves to Central and South America in the 16th and 17th centuries,
they continued to make marimbas there. The instruments underwent further development on the
American continent, especially in Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil ("Marimbaphone", 2003). In these
countries the calabashes were replaced by precisely tuned wood resonator chambers.
In Latin America, the name "marimba" refers to every kind of large xylophone with calabashes as
resonators of the type that originated from Africa. The name "marimba" was eventually applied to
the concert and orchestra instrument that had been inspired by the Latin American model
("Marimbaphone", 2003). Darius Milhaud, a French composer, made the marimba popular and gave

Steel Drum. The steel drum is a skillfully hammered 55–gallon oil barrel which has been carefully
tuned by hand to produce perfect musical tones ("Steel Pan History", 2017). It was developed on the
Caribbean island of Trinidad during the early years of the 20th century. Old rubbish tins, care parts,
and garbage can lids formed the first "Iron Bands", which led to the realization that a dented section
of a barrel head could produce a musical note. Careful refinement of this discovery produced the
modern steel drum that is now often seen being played by street musicians.
Conclusion
Percussion has evolved throughout its history into what it is today. Melodic instruments have several
origins, the two main origins being Eastern Asia and Africa. In each culture their first intended use
was for religion and war. Melodic percussion instruments, like most instruments, are now used for
less serious events than their original uses. Rather than being linked to war and religion, a majority
of melodic percussion is used for entertainment. Along with the change of melodic percussion's
contributions in war and religion, comes the advancement melodic percussion has made for
entertainment. Today they are played in most places around the world in ensembles or even on
streets during street performances. Although the instruments belonging to melodic percussion can be
played and enjoyed on their own, the main purpose of a melodic percussion instrument now usually

A Snapshot Of The Village Life During Bronze Age Vietnam
Dongson Drums: A Snapshot of the Village Life in Bronze Age Vietnam
Thesis Statement: Although many scholars believe that the feathered figures on the drums are
depictions of ancestor figures, ethnographic evidences from the Karen's use of the drum and the
Toraja's funeral rites suggest that the images engraved on the drums are mere portrayals of village
life in Dongson.
Located in the Hong (Red) River valley, the Dongson society is said to be highly dependent on
water for agricultural purposes. Some examples of images on the drum that portray farming
activities include villagers pounding rice with hand pestles and water buffalos working the fields. In
his article, Bernet Kempers offers ethnographic evidence to the use of kettledrums by ... Show more

The rice harvest usually is situated before the ceremonies to provide more food to the attendees.
Processions "accompanied by rhythmic sound of gongs" are also involved in moving a tau tau from
one place to another. From these, similarities of the Toraja funeral ritual to the images on the
Dongson drums are quite apparent. The images of houses on stilts with boat–shaped roofs seen on
some Dongson drums are similar to the clan houses at Tana Toraja. A large number of livestock
animals such as pigs, water buffalos, and goats are also depicted on the drums. As mentioned before,
activities related to rice harvest such as pounding of rice are portrayed. Rhythmic drum
accompaniments and feathered dancers also appear on the tympanum of the Dongson drum. In her
article, Maria Christou affirms claims that the Toraja is closely related to the Dongson. She states
that most of the art produced by the Toraja including beadwork, carving, textile, and painting
reflects the designs of the Dongson drums. Thus it is safe to say that the scenes on the Dongson
drums may correspond to ceremonial rites similar to Toraja funerals.
The real question that needs to be answered though are about the feathered human–like figures
riding elaborately decorated boats, and whether or not they are ancestor figures, which would
indicate that the Dongson people are some kind of ancestor cult. The popular opinion is that these
feathered ancestors guide the deceased to

Abstract
This paper is intended to evaluate the success or failure of the fisheries management regarding Red
Drum or Sciaenops ocellatus in the coastal Florida area of the United States. The Red Drum, or the
common name "Redfish", is a popular sport fish among anglers due to its reputation as a formidable
adversary, and the value of it on the market for table fare. The advent of blackened recipes from the
bayous of the southeast has also increased its popularity.

The primary focus of the CCA agenda regarding management changes is in the zoning regulations
imposed by the FWC. These zones are divided by a north and south sector with an increase of bag
limits to be allowed in the north zone exclusively. The argument posed by CCA is that creating
separate zones and increasing bag limits will jeopardize the entire management plan and place the
species at risk.
The CCA credits a successful 1988 campaign of prohibiting commercial harvesting and improved
restriction driven by their organization. The claim is that the additional protective measures resulted
in the revitalized stock assessment by the FWRI. Without these changes, they argue, the population
would be in serious decline with possible change of status to "vulnerable". They also claim that a
stock assessment from the FWC does not support an increase in bag limits citing Spawning Potential
Ratio (SPR) instead of escapement percentage. They also use data from the FWC escapement charts
that indicate a declining rate over the past decade.
No biological evidence exists to support a zoning status regarding the state fisheries. If a zoning
regulation were to be implemented, genetic and tagging data indicates the zones to be east and west
rather than the current objectives. This resultant data is an indication of juvenile stocks and
migration of

The Potlatches of Northwestern Tribes
In the Metropolitan Museum of art there is a wide verity of objects for the Northwest tribes. In the
Northwest coast music is highly associated with ceremonies and feasts known as the potlatches.
Potlatches were held by a host to establish or uphold his status position in society. Other times they
were to signify a significant event in his family like the birth of a child, a daughter's first menses, or
a son's marriage. Potlatches are to be successful and guests are invited to a potlatch to share food
and receive gifts or payment. The host provides everything from food, drink, entertainment and, also
his gifts to each of his guests. The value of the gift depends on the social status of the recipient, the
higher the respect for him the more valuable the gift is. If his gift in not that valuable or wanted it
would look bad for the provider. If this happens the host must add another gift to satisfy his guest. A
potlatch can last for several days when celebrating a passing spirit that contains feasting, singing,
performing ritual dances, competitions and other events.
During these potlatches the events is traditionally marked by ceremonial dances and also by songs.
The songs get an extra effect by providing whistles, rattles, and specific vocal utterances. Whistles
are associated with the spirits. A main element used by the Northwest coast is the beat of a drum.

Music During The Civil War
Through out the years, music has developed and many genres have been created and have been
evolved. During the 1960s, music started to become louder. Drummers were required to hit their
drums and cymbals harder to fit the style of music (6). While jazz styles were still widely popular,
music was being created in a straight and loud feel, and it has remained that way to this very day (7).
Many modern drummers have taken the influences of drummers from the early 20th century and
they are using it in music today. With all this development in styles of music, the drum kit evolved
along with them.
The Civil war was over. The former slaves were now free to play music and share their influences.

Timpani Research Paper
The timpani is a percussion instrument with the longest tradition. It's been used in a variety of
music: ranging from music to symbolize the power of monarchs to church music. The tuning of the
instrument has changed throughout it's lifespan. First from not being able to tune them at all, to
having large, awkward screws, to having an operating pedal on the bottom to change the tension of
the head (Tucmandl). The way performers tune this drum has always been improved, making it
easier on the performer when on stage. The next step to improve the efficiency of tuning was made
with a new way to tune, with electronics. Recently, inventor David Byrd Ribner has created a tuning
and pitch control system for the timpani. This makes it almost automatic, and also makes it
extremely easier for a timpanist to perform on the spot.
The control system uses a position sensor that specifies a reference value corresponding to a desired
timpani pitch. Then it uses a control unit applies a force on the timpani head, determining a

Imagine the noodle and string as the pedal of the timpani head, where as it goes to the right the
tension of the head increases, which also creates a higher pitch, and the zone indicates the desired
pitch. One can see the difficulty of the pitch changes by trying to quickly flick the noodle in the
zone with their eyes closed, just like trying to tune a timpani to a desired range without knowing
what the current pitch is, with only one chance for perfection. After a few times, it becomes easier as
one knows the zone more. With the device, one can see the comparison by flicking with their eyes
open, and also having two chances to flick it, since the device tells the timpanist what the pitch is
and also how they need to change the pedal. This creates the obvious simplicity the device makes to
the timpanist, especially when

Harvey Mason And The Canopus Drums
"Harvey Mason is probably the most recorded and most influential drummer /percussionist in this
genre." proclaims Nathan East, member of fOURPLAY, prominent Jazz, R&B, and Rock artist. Mr.
Mason was born February 22nd, 1947 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He is international known as a
drummer. Harvey Mason can play the Canopus Drums, Sabian cymbals, Remo drumheads, DW
pedals, Vic Firth drumsticks, and Roc N Soc drum thrones. To add to that astonishing list, he even
has his own signature drumstick and Vic Firth Harvey Mason Chameleon signature drumstick. In
past years, he used various instruments such as Gretsch Drums, Premier drums, Rogers Drums, Tana
Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Toca percussion and Gibraltar Hardware. I do not know what those are
but Harvey Mason had to be a great musician to master all those instruments.
Since a young age Harvey Mason never had a problem picking up beats. He remembers lying in bed
at night, locking into the rolling groove of his mother's washing machine, fluffing his pillow into a
ball and playing along to it with his fingers. Harvey started taking formal drum lessons at age 7,
playing in school groups eventually purchasing his first drum set at 16 years old. He played so
amazingly well that Atlantic City 's Wonder Gardens Club proprietor, Sonny McCall, got a unique
permit just so the teenaged Mason could play there without any trouble. Harvey proceeded with his
musical training first at the Berklee School of Music, then on full grant to the

Red Drum Fishing Analysis
The red drum fishing contest was just under way, and fishermen from miles around gathered on the
beaches of Avon, looking for that prize winning catch. It's ironic, Morgan Menlock hated fishing,
and yet, here he was, dangling from the hook of Skip Baldridge's new surf–fishing rod, complete
with Momoi Diamond monofilament 130–pound line. Skip chuckled to himself that the ad was
correct...the line was 200% tougher than tested strengths, because Morgan was not a small man. It
had taken considerable effort to reel in this catch, and as the body reached the surface, Skip couldn't
help the feeling of disappointment that washed over him. The prize money wouldn't solve all Skip's
problems, but every bit helped. Dare County Sheriff Henry Roads stood

Essay On Bring It On
The Toms River High School North's Nautical Star Theater Company presented the musical, Bring
It On, this past weekend. It was at auditorium of my home school, Toms River High School. Bring It
On was a tremendously relatable play, with a great amount of action; it is a recent play that came out
in 2000, so the costuming and music was very modern. The concert environment was very familiar
to me because like I said, I attended High School North; therefore, I felt at home. To be honest, the
seats were and always have been very uncomfortable due to them being hard plastic; it is not so bad
if you are just sitting on them for a couple of minutes, but after a while it becomes horrific. On a
positive note, the auditorium was very clean, making it very welcoming. The temperature was very
cold in the lobby, though as I went ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believed this was the most upbeat song of the entire musical with the full cast on stage dancing and
singing and the pit orchestra playing along. The tempo is vivace, it is in quadruple meter, and the
tonality is major, being in the key of F major. "I Got You" has a dynamic marking between mezzo
forte and forte, depending on the part of the song. All three textures– monophony, homophony, and
polyphony are used. Again, repetition is found a various numbers of times as the lyrics, "i got you"
are sang. The timbre is composed of the entire pit orchestra; two guitars, two pianos, a drum set, a
bass, and other percussion instruments, but the drum set is heavily featured. The timbre is also
composed of the male and female singers on stage, varying in all voice types– soprano, alto, tenor,
and bass. "I Got You" was the most entertaining and lively song of the show with the differing
pitches of voices, lyrics, and dance parts. I truly enjoyed this number the most and it made for a
great ending of the

Caribbean Music History
The history of Caribbean music is correlated to the history of the Caribbean itself. That islands were
invaded by outsiders whom inflicted violence, slavery, and genocide upon those that originally
inhabited the islands. Its surprising that Caribbean music is aimable despite this formative
background. Based on Christopher Columbus's voyage, Spain claimed the entire region as its own.
This displeased natives and Spain's European neighbors which provoked a war that erupted across
the islands of the Caribbean, fought by Spain, France, England, Denmark, and the Netherlands. All
these battles, in addition to the diseases brought from Europe, decimated the native tribes knocking
out entire cultures. Thus the Caribbean was colonized as part of the various European empires. The
native culture was eroded further when the Europeans imported African slaves to work the sugar and
coffee plantations on the island colonies. In multiple circumstances the native cultures and musics
were replaced with those brought over from Africa.
The most important instrument in Caribbean music is the drum. As well as being the foundation of
African music, drums are inexpensive, simple and can be handmade with easily obtainable
materials. Almost all Caribbean music acquires a distinct beat created by the drums. Most drums are
some version of the bongo or the larger congo, a smooth wooden drum that is played with the hands.

Cymbals Research Paper
In the earliest centuries of art entertainment, music was considered an expensive form of art
exclusively for the upper class. As the art progressed, materials that were used for centuries in other
ways became common in the musical profession. From the beginning of time to modern day music,
the cymbal has progressed and improved to become one of the most versatile yet simplest
instruments in any band. The progress of cymbals lies in part in the hands of those who create it as
well as the materials and techniques they choose to make it. The cymbal as the world knows it today
began thousands of years ago with multiple different uses and has evolved into its own art form
mastered by few to invent thousands of cymbals seen in multiple music scenes across the world.
The cymbal, a common percussion instrument, varies both in style and use simply by how it is
constructed and the materials used to construct it. While the common person would easily mistake a
cymbal to be a very simplistic and elementary instrument of the percussion family, a cymbal's size,
weight, and even indention pattern can impact not only the type of cymbal, but also the sound it
creates. Throughout the cymbal's existence, talented craftsmen have perfected the art of cymbal
making. Materials such as bronze, nickel silver, and brass are most commonly used to manufacture

Analysis Of The Film 'Whiplash'
Stage 1 English
Responding To Texts: Film Study
How do the cinematic techniques (mise–en–scène, cinematography, editing, and sound design) work
together in the selected scene or sequence to develop the film's central characters and themes?
Damien Chazelle's Whiplash (2014) follows Andrew Neiman, a fame–driven drummer joins the
studio band at a prestigious music school, Shaffer Conservatory where he is acquainted with the
manipulative and vigorous Terence Fletcher who pushes him to his limits. The salient themes of
volatile and manipulative student–teacher relationship, overcoming adversity and relentless pursuit
of perfection are accentuated through cinematic techniques such as mise–en–scène, cinematography,
and sound design and editing. The scene which exemplifies these themes are when Andrew Neiman
is competing against two drummers, Ryan Connolly and Carl Tanner, to "earn the part" of becoming
the main drummer of a jazz composition called Caravan (1936) composed by Duke Ellington.
Chazelle's usage of mise–en– scène is used to demonstrate the important theme of volatile and
manipulative student–teacher relationship. The dimly–lit room is representative of Fletchers'
personality, throughout the film Fletcher is portrayed as a manipulative teacher who would go out to
any means to get what he desires. The costumes used in this scene are vital to express the volatile
relationship between Fletcher and his students. During this scene, Connolly is the only drummer to

Drums History
Drums have existed for a very long time. Some say they even date back to 6000 BC. It is no wonder
then, that they have been used for a variety of situations and have evolved to create a wide range of
different types. This being said, all drums, or 'membranophones' (the technical classification),
consist of at least one drum–head or drum skin. This is stretched over a shell and beaten either by
hand or instrument to produce its sound. Most commonly it is used as a musical instrument as a part
of the percussion group, to be used in rituals or entertainment such as modern day's rock bands.
Throughout the world, drums have been created from many materials, including wood, metal,
plastic and even clay.
The material of the drum skin can also vary from place to place, culture to culture. The skins of

A drum can have two heads on either side of the body, or alternatively, one drum–head on the top of
the body. There are drums which have been designed to be easy to carry around, such as those used
in street parades, and drums which are immobile.
When we listen to music such as rock, the drums we are hearing are inevitably part of the
aforementioned drum kit – a selection of drums that are non–pitched and can be used together in
harmony. The sounds and rhythms one can create with a drum kit are so diversified that a number of
music genres can use them to create their preferred sound.
The bass drum is large and when played, creates a very low pitch. More specifically we are talking
about the orchestral bass drum, the smaller 'kick' drum and the pitched bass drums. Orchestral drums
are the larger of the three and are primarily used in orchestral concerts. The kick–drum is the largest
drum in a drum–kit and is utilized with a foot pedal. The last one mentioned, the pitched bass drum,
is a popular choice for marching parades and the drums

Drums
What is the absolute best sound in the world? Is it the crashing of waves, the sound of a V8 hemi, or
the sound of a credit card being swiped and approved? For a musician, in particular a percussionist,
the sound of a drum set would be their favorite sound in the world. Today I am going to briefly talk
about the origin of the drum, the components of the modern drum set, and the benefits of drumming.
I) Percussion instruments have been used since prehistoric times.
A) Drums are found in nearly every culture in the world and have existed since before 6000 B.C.

a) Snare drum: mounted on a special stand, placed between the players knees. Contain steel strands
underneath it which produce its unique sound.
b) One or more tom toms drums, (high pitched short drums), mounted on raised stands without
snares underneath them like the snare drum.
c) A hi–hat stand(set of 2 cymb.) , operated by the left foot. Also, one or more suspended cymbals
are used (normally crash, ride). All the drums and cymbals are hit using a drumstick, w/ the
exception of the bass drum
d) Bass drum: Played by a pedal operated by the right foot. Low end, Deep, punchy sound.
e) The drumset is usually played seated on a drum stool or throne.

The Musical Exploration Of Isms
Introduction
Mickey Hart once said, "Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a
rhythm machine, that's what we are." Percussion is one of the oldest instrument families and has
grown to a degree of vast importance in all forms of modern Western music. Namely, this is because
of the incorporation of percussion into both academia and entertainment music. At first, percussion
was introduced into Western Classical music during the Classical period, as a means of getting
exotic and unusual sounds for composers; however, the twentieth century works brought a unique
gravitation to percussion. Twentieth century composers, such as Edgar Varese and John Cage,
helped pave a way for an era of music history marked by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Janissary instruments find their roots in the Turkish military bands of the Ottoman Empire. The
term Janissary refers to the Turkish Yeñi–çeri, or "new troops". Sultan Orkhan I, of the Ottoman
Empire, created The Janissaries, but his successor, Murad I, officially established the corps circa
1360's CE. Furthermore, they were originally an elite corps of troops made up of the Sultan's loyal
slaves. The corps eventually picked up the use of military bands, which was a highly esteemed
military tradition. These military bands are even documented in a 1237 CE manuscript inscribed
during the Crusades, which depicts two "long trumpets" and a pair of mounted "kettledrums" with
battle flags and standards. The date of this manuscript indicates the Arabic and Persian heritages of
one of the major instruments in the Janissary classification, the Timpani. In addition, the Ottoman
Expansionism throughout the 1600's gave the Western world a large amount of exposure to the
Turkish military band music and instruments. Countless militarily effective instruments were carried
into Western armies, such as the Cavalry Kettledrums, or Timpani.
Figure 1: Mounted Trumpeters and a Kettledrummer (Persian, 1237 CE) Timpani was the first
incorporated percussion instrument in Western music. Subsequently, it evolved from a Medieval
instrument called Nakers. The Nakers are

What Is My Favorite Place Essay
Everyone has a place they go to when they need to be comforted or a place to feel safe. For some
people it's their school, house, park, or even a friend's home. For me, my favorite place to go to is
the Fine Arts Building. Every time I have ever found myself in a situation where I was greatly upset
or felt unsafe I always ran to the fine arts building on UNK campus even if it meant driving half an
hour. Music has always been a comforting thing and that's what the fine arts building is all about. I
can go almost anywhere in the building and feel completely at home. There are three places within
the building that I enjoy the most.
The lobby is the hub of the music building. It is the main place for people to drink coffee and chat.
Everyone in the music building lives off of coffee and almost anyone can be seen drinking some
kind of caffeinated beverage. The entire building always smells like coffee in every single room. No
matter how far away the room is from the coffee shop. The lobby is always filled with people
chatting or working on homework or studying music scores. I know that I can always find someone
willing to talk to me whenever I walk into the lobby. All along the walls are dark gray couches with
little end tables separating them. During marching season, there is always an iron and a sewing kit

Correlation Between Music and IQ in Children Essay
1. Introduction
This project investigates the effect which the playing of a musical instrument – namely the drums –
has on one's intelligence and academic ability. A search of the literature reveals that studies of this
kind have been conducted by other researchers in many parts of the world and has led to the
conclusion that music is an extremely healthy activity to be involved in.
A study conducted on school children in America concluded that children who took voice or piano
lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Dye (2012)
reinforces this, stating that scientific research shows that studying music improves school
performance. Gaser and Schlaug (2003) showed that musicians learn advanced ... Show more

The aim of this study is to ascertain whether learning to play the drums increases one's IQ score or
not. Will learners who take daily drum lessons for two weeks improve their intelligence by
improving their memories and having their brains stimulated?
2. Review of Literature
A number of studies showing the relationship between the playing of musical instruments and IQ
development are discussed below. A few studies on the effect of drum lessons on brain development
are also considered.
2.1 Correlation between Music and IQ in children
In Canada, Schellenberg conducted a study on school children and college students and concluded
that those who took voice or piano lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did
not (Munsey, 2006). Schellenberg also studied whether the effect of an increase in IQ would
continue to improve with more than a year's lessons and his most recent work has proven that this is
in fact the case. The study found that young adults who had taken music lessons in childhood did
have higher IQ's and better high school grades than people who didn't. He concluded that college
students who had played a musical instrument regularly as children were two points ahead in IQ

Why Is It Said To Be So Alive?
Rapid clacking noises of the rim of the taiko drums began the opening ceremony. All I saw were
bamboo sticks and mechanisms connecting my eyes and ears while my hands held the mouth. I
jumped up and got in my crouching position. The bass of the taiko drums vibrated in my heels and
chest; I felt alive. Adults and children, watching my partner and me, were amazed and a little scared.
As I shook and swung the 20–pound lion head around, I realized my effect as a leader on the crowd.
As I feasted on the cabbages, Chinese red envelopes, and oranges, I realized I was much more than
just some bamboo sticks and mechanisms. On the outside, I was a lion. A golden fur bearded, red
and green–eyed, rainbow–colored pom–pom covered, various art patterned lion!
Boom, bang, cling. The beat of taiko drums, gongs, and cymbals rang in coordination as I ran
downstairs with my friends. As we rushed, our teacher shouted at us to slow down because we can
barely reach the huge steps that go downstairs, but I was excited, so I ran anyways. As I burst
through the doors, I saw a colorful lion going crazy, parading around the auditorium! I stood there as
my heart raced and stared at it just wondering how they were making the lion look so alive. Right
then, I was instantly hooked.
Two years later, when I finally graduated kindergarten, I went to first grade. I became the butt of the
lion, the follower, the bottom. There was a strap that connected to my waist that allowed my

During the cool fall Saturday mornings, my dad would wake me up early to leave for rocket football

and Pink Floyd. My dad when he was younger used to play the drums, so while we were driving he
would tap the steering wheel and the fold up seat in between us with the beat of the song. Those
were the first moments that my passion for drumming was fueled. By late elementary school, my
parents gave me some electric drum sticks that would connected to my mp3 player and would make

Patliness And Death In Funeral Blues, By WH Auden
Funeral Blues, by WH Auden, is a poem in which the poet gives an account of his loved one who
has died. He expresses feelings of sadness, loneliness, and blankness, we get to know that because
of the techniques used by him. One of his phrases that show these feelings is "Let aeroplanes circle
moaning overhead, Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead." Here he wants to show that the
terrible loss of his loved one meant a lot to him. He wants everyone to feel the way he does, that is
sad. That is the reason he wants the aeroplanes to scribble the message "He is Dead" in the sky. He
wants that everyone in this world should grieve because his loved one is dead. He says "He" a word
mostly used for God, for his loved one because the person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

And to indicate that he uses a mass of figurative language. He uses metaphors such as "My working
week and my Sunday rest" here the poet is comparing his lover with his working week, that is all the
seven days in a week. In short he wants to illustrate that the person who has died was everything for
him. A second effective metaphor is "dismantle the sun" where he uses the word dismantle, which is
mainly used for machines or a structure. The poet here compares the sun to a machine that is to be
dismantled. The poet sees the sun as a light giving machine. Infact he doesn't want any brightness
and therefore he wants to dismantle the sun. He also uses hyperbole when he say "Pour away the
ocean". It is a hyperbole because pouring away the vast ocean cannot be done by anyone, it is
impossible to do so. It is obvious that the poet is exaggerating. He mentions this so as to express that
as the fishes can't live without water even he cannot live without his lover. In short he wants the
nature to express the blankness in

Drum-Early History: The Invention Of Musical Instruments

"The use of drums has been recognized as being able to put people into spiritual trances throughout
history. The drum is a musical instrument with great power and presence that gives the "pulse" or
backbone to the music it is incorporated with." 1 This quote from the article The History of the
Drum – Early History, describes how much impact the musical instrument has on human beings, as
well as the influence it has on the music it is performed with. Seemingly, this makes the drum
appear to have a major effect on society, and more so the culture during specific time periods as

As culture and society has grown, changed, so have percussion and the instruments used. When
looking back, the impact drums and percussion had on these peoples is unprecedented. As said by
many artists and musicians alike, drums are the backbone of any piece of music or band. What
started as a simple object played with your hands has turned into a diverse, complex range of
diversified snares, toms, bass drums, etc. Many current percussion and set players today trace the
roots of their art and style back to the time periods mentioned. African percussion items like the
djembe are still used in bands today, and are being produced and sold by the biggest brands in the
drum industry. The instruments discovered in the past have encouraged many of us, including
myself, to take a look at what we used to play as a community, and how it brought us together or
even gave us hope, as witnessed during the Middle Ages. Percussion was a vital part of many
cultures and now we hear it in everything: in the background of a commercial, in the beat of a song,

Ginger thanked him too, then added, "It must've cost you a lot of money. It might be a while before

The Performance Art Center On Texas State University 's...
On the first of November I visited the Performance Art Center, on Texas State University's campus.
There I saw the Texas State Jazz Ensemble perform with guest, Steve Houghton. The performance
began at 7:30pm and lasted for an approximate hour and a half. As I observed the stage I noticed
that there were a variety of instruments played in the jazz ensemble. The instruments that were
played included string (grand piano, electric guitar, electric bass, bass), brass (trumpet, trombone,
French horn), woodwind (tenor sax, alto sax, baritone sax) and percussion instruments (six piece
drum set, bongos). On the drum set was, special guest, Steve Houghton from the music school of
Iowa. Overall, there were several different pieces of different sub–genres of jazz music. The pieces
that were played in the ensemble included the following: Slide's Derangement by Slide Hampton,
BBC by Bob Florence, Dangerous Curves by Matt Harris, Blues for 70 by John Clayton, Jazz
Crimes by Joshua Reden, Isotope by Joe Henderson, Basie's Back in Town by Ernie Wilkins. Each
piece named above had its own uniqueness. The characteristics of each musical piece will be
described below: Slide's Derangement started off with a solo performed by an alto sax. There were
also solos performed by a trumpet and the drums. Each solo was accompanied by a melodic
repetition of numerous crescendos performed by brass and woodwind instruments. The drums and
the rhythm kept the upbeat tempo by the string instruments. The

Why I Want To Be A Drummer
Drummers are perennially underrated. Some writers make rock critic jokes, even other musicians
make drummer jokes. But where would the Beatles be without their drummer Ringo Star. The real
human drummer was replaced with electronic computer machines during the eighties and nineties
for a while, but music fans realized that this was not as good as the sound of a real talented
drummer. The drummer does not just support the band they hold it up and push the forward. Robert
Plant, the lead singer of Led Zeppelin was very fond of his drummer, John Bonham, who was one of
the best drummers out there during his time and even today. When he passed away the lead singer
could not go on anymore in the band Led Zeppelin, because he knew it would not be the same
without his original and super talented drummer. The loss of ... Show more content on

This goes to show just how important the drummer is and how they can keep a band together.
The argument on how much practice it takes to be a drummer is essential for new musicians to learn
about because if they truly want to be a drummer they must know that it is not the usual go to
instrument in a band. It takes so much patience and practice to become a good enough drummer to
even be in a band. It is also imperative to know how much work goes into becoming the drummer
because some fans may view the drummer as just the guy or girl in the background where they need
to realize how a band cannot be a band without the drummer. This argument is also for the
drummers out there who need to receive more recognition from their fans. Drumming has been
around forever, and it is such remarkable instrument to learn. Drummers may also

A summary of the different Pukulan specific to the Kompang Ezhar community is shown in Figure 1 below: Figure 1: A summary of the various types of Pukulan found in the Kompang Ezhar (Abdullah, 2005) In Kompang, rhythm is mainly characterized by the interlocking of different parts divided within the Kompang ensemble. Interlocking is basically done with two or more Kompangs playing simultaneously, with one part playing the Basic beat which is usually the downbeats; another part playing the Rhythm beat which is usually the off beats; and an additional part(s) playing the Leading beat which is usually characterized by triplets or a syncopated rhythm that creates a unique interlocking texture specific to the Malay Kompang musical genre (Hahril, 2010). • 4. Analysis Of The Movie ' The Studio Band ' Essay Adjusting to college is, as us students would put it, "wild." But, very few can say they had an experience comparable Andrew Neiman from Damien Chazelle's Whiplash. As a freshman at the Shaffer Conservatory (the fictitious best music school in the U.S.), Neiman happens into the best Jazz ensemble in the whole school. "The Studio Band" is directed by Terence Fletcher, who is unashamedly abusive to his students. During Neiman's first rehearsal, Fletcher catches him "off– tempo" and responds by slapping him, hurling a chair at him, and verbally abusing him in front of the whole class. Neiman, committed to never feeling that level of embarrassment again, responds by practicing until his hands bleed. Through this intense treatment, he finds new drive in striving to become one of the greatest drummers of his time. Neiman's drive transitions into obsession and his relationship with Fletcher becomes increasingly toxic. Director Chazelle wanted to paint a picture of a world he himself had lived. He shares his own life through the "ticking clocks of the rehearsal rooms, the padded soundproofing of the practice booths, the trombonists emptying spit valves, the popped blisters and bleeding hands – I might be able to examine how that world reflected America as a whole." Chazelle gives us a "natural point of entry" (Smith 5) to invoke an idea that can resonate deep inside all of us: passion. Some art aims to invoke emotionlessness in us by depicting something completely unrelatable, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Who can pick up an instrument and let all their emotions free with no sheet music or chords to follow, and still make it sound crafted by the gods. He'd heard of people sitting down with a cello in front of an audience and making the audience feel. Levi had heard of people who play from the heart, but frankly, he didn't believe any of it. That was all romanticized bullshit fit to play to the hearts of teens who believed music was some form of magic that brought two lost souls together. It was limited to movies and romance novels found in any YA section. Levi believed in order, structure. Levi doubted that statement had much truth behind it, there was a tuba player who was actually high at the moment. "And then you come in here, you disrespect me, you disrespect your peers. Get off my stage. Now." Eren set his drum sticks down on the edge of his drum, put his hands in his pockets, and walked off. In front of the stage was a few rows a chairs that usually held an audience of about 20 during concerts, mostly made up of parents and the occasional grandparent cheering on their darling child during a concert they were required to attend unless they wanted an F. Eren took the seat furthest away from the stage and pulled his phone out of his pocket. Behind him the conductor let out a sigh and held up her hand again. "Take the pick up at measure 34." She seemed calmer this time, more collected. Normally after an Eren incident she would be ruthless to the rest of the concert band until the bell rang. "And Levi." He raised an eyebrow in return. Where I can take naps, eat a half–gallon of ice cream and become addicted to some new television series. As a matter of fact, I lived that lifestyle once. To be honest, I absolutely hated it. As stressful as days can be, with little to no pauses, I much prefer it than not keeping busy.Time is so scarce, I try to make the most of it. More specifically by playing time, or rather, playing drums. My hit–kit, as some rarely refer to it as, journey began when I was twelve years old. In junior high school, I was a part of my schools jazz band. In high school, I was again a part of the schools jazz band. In addition, I was in bands here and there, but didn't play out often. I also auditioned and made it into the Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO) Jazz Ensemble. I even made is as an alternate for New York State School Music Associate (NYSSMA) All State Jazz Ensemble. Lastly, I was accepted and spent my first two semesters of college at Berklee College of Music. However, as great as these experiences and opportunities were, they did not keep me nearly busy as I am today with music. Actually, they really didn't keep me busy at all. Well, Berklee was an all music college, but its not like I was playing gigs all the time. It was not until recently, within the past year, that my adventures with drumming began to pick up. To Do Or Not To Play Argumentative Essay AJ Carter Argument Essay Aubrie Cox 17 October 2012 To Play or Not to Play It seems that no matter what at some point in a child's life they wander up to their parents and ask, "Mom, Dad, can I learn to play an instrument?" Whether or not it is the guitar, drums, piano, or flute a child could possibly have the thought of wanting to learn how to play an instrument. When Mom and Dad end up saying no to their child they should stop and realize that when a child knows how to play a musical instrument it can help them out in many more ways than they know (iDiva). Having a young kid learn an instrument can help develop better coordination, build better concentration, help with stress relief, and enhance a child's intelligence, along with many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach are some of the most creative people in the history of the World, and what did they do? They played instruments. Playing a musical instrument for a child is a creative pursuit (Caron). Parents are always pushing their children to be more and more creative, well parents why not buy them an instrument and let their creativity be expressed? "Everybody is born creative, but many people don't realize it because it's not encouraged in their early years (iDiva)." Having your child play an instrument would let that creativity that is bundled up inside them, that they did not even know they had, and would let it sore out. Look at the creativity that the guitarist in the last thirty to forty years have. Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Angus Young are three of the greatest guitarist. Imagine if their parents would have never bought them a guitar. Then some of the best music ever would have never been written. It is the ultimate feeling someone can receive when they are just playing along on an instrument and all of a sudden compose some sort of music. When I'm playing my guitar just doing really nonsense chord progressions, or playing random riffs, and I build a song on the guitar the feeling is unreal. Once that happens the only thought that goes through my head is, "Whoa, I just made music on my own." I've been playing for about 8 years now and that feeling never goes away. Along with ... Throughout the film each actor clearly had an understanding of not only who their character was, but what their character's overall objective was. Building character is essential to a great performance and by watching this film I could easily tell each actor did the proper preparation it took to get a better understanding who Fletcher and Andrew were. These actors are a great example of what we, as actors, should be striving for when we begin to analyze a new character. The chemistry between Simmons and Teller on screen was incredible, and I believe a huge portion of that was due to their comprehension of their characters. A factor that played a great part between these two characters was the idea of high status and low status. Fletcher is clearly the high status character, holding the power to make or break Andrew's life–long dream. Simmons plays this part of Fletcher quite clearly through his physical and vocal choices. His movement is very meticulous, almost as if he's constantly thinking about every move he makes. His posture is tall and overbearing, often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Origins Of The Percussion Family Examining the Origins of the Percussion Family To get a clear view of the origins of the percussion family, one should first have to the ability to classify the plethora of instruments. For the sake of this document we will use the broad classification of Janissary instruments and non–Janissary instruments. The Janissary instruments find their roots in the Turkish military bands of the Ottoman Empire. The term Janissary refers to the Turkish Yeñi–çeri, or "new troops". Sultan Orkhan I, of the Ottoman Empire, created The Janissaries, but his successor, Murad I, officially established the corps circa 1360's CE. They were originally an elite corps of troops made up of the Sultan's loyal slaves. The corps eventually picked up the use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is most likely the influence of the Crusades that would have brought Arabic culture, albeit in a violent way, to Europe. Timpani, as aforementioned, hold an intrinsically military tradition. Because of its use in the Turkish armies, the Europe borrowed the instrument in its armies. These influences can be seen in the earliest uses of timpani. The timpani that were taken from the Arabs were made into an essential element of prestige for the nobility. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries both trumpeters and kettle drummer were restricted to only those of high rank or nobility. This lead to the creation of an exclusive guild to train the instrumentalists. This lead to a surplus of players, especially after the last failed Siege of Vienna in 1683 CE. Due to this surplus, the Classical period, when timpani were used on a regular basis, began to use timpani in a limited fashion. In combination with the trumpets, the timpani mostly played rhythmically driving music. This is best observed in Handel's Messiah. During the Hallelujah Chorus the trumpets and timpani can be easily heard playing the same material. This pairing is not coincidental, both instruments had a high amount of military background during the time of Handel. So, the pairing would have observed that military tradition, but this military tradition followed the Eastern custom of pairing trumpet with timpani. It is important to note that this trend among the Classical composers to use timpani ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Analysis Of Darius Milhaud, A French Composer When Africans were sold as slaves to Central and South America in the 16th and 17th centuries, they continued to make marimbas there. The instruments underwent further development on the American continent, especially in Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil ("Marimbaphone", 2003). In these countries the calabashes were replaced by precisely tuned wood resonator chambers. In Latin America, the name "marimba" refers to every kind of large xylophone with calabashes as resonators of the type that originated from Africa. The name "marimba" was eventually applied to the concert and orchestra instrument that had been inspired by the Latin American model ("Marimbaphone", 2003). The steel drum is a skillfully hammered 55–gallon oil barrel which has been carefully tuned by hand to produce perfect musical tones ("Steel Pan History", 2017). It was developed on the Caribbean island of Trinidad during the early years of the 20th century. Old rubbish tins, care parts, and garbage can lids formed the first "Iron Bands", which led to the realization that a dented section of a barrel head could produce a musical note. Careful refinement of this discovery produced the modern steel drum that is now often seen being played by street musicians. Conclusion Percussion has evolved throughout its history into what it is today. Melodic instruments have several origins, the two main origins being Eastern Asia and Africa. In each culture their first intended use was for religion and war. Melodic percussion instruments, like most instruments, are now used for less serious events than their original uses. Rather than being linked to war and religion, a majority of melodic percussion is used for entertainment. Along with the change of melodic percussion's contributions in war and religion, comes the advancement melodic percussion has made for entertainment. Today they are played in most places around the world in ensembles or even on streets during street performances. A Snapshot Of The Village Life During Bronze Age Vietnam Dongson Drums: A Snapshot of the Village Life in Bronze Age Vietnam Thesis Statement: Although many scholars believe that the feathered figures on the drums are depictions of ancestor figures, ethnographic evidences from the Karen's use of the drum and the Toraja's funeral rites suggest that the images engraved on the drums are mere portrayals of village life in Dongson. Located in the Hong (Red) River valley, the Dongson society is said to be highly dependent on water for agricultural purposes. Some examples of images on the drum that portray farming activities include villagers pounding rice with hand pestles and water buffalos working the fields. The rice harvest usually is situated before the ceremonies to provide more food to the attendees. Processions "accompanied by rhythmic sound of gongs" are also involved in moving a tau tau from one place to another. From these, similarities of the Toraja funeral ritual to the images on the Dongson drums are quite apparent. The images of houses on stilts with boat–shaped roofs seen on some Dongson drums are similar to the clan houses at Tana Toraja. A large number of livestock animals such as pigs, water buffalos, and goats are also depicted on the drums. As mentioned before, activities related to rice harvest such as pounding of rice are portrayed. Rhythmic drum accompaniments and feathered dancers also appear on the tympanum of the Dongson drum. In her article, Maria Christou affirms claims that the Toraja is closely related to the Dongson. She states that most of the art produced by the Toraja including beadwork, carving, textile, and painting reflects the designs of the Dongson drums. Thus it is safe to say that the scenes on the Dongson drums may correspond to ceremonial rites similar to Toraja funerals. The real question that needs to be answered though are about the feathered human–like figures riding elaborately decorated boats, and whether or not they are ancestor figures, which would indicate that the Dongson people are some kind of ancestor cult. Lyles COMM/215 May 7, 2012 David Mumford Abstract This paper is intended to evaluate the success or failure of the fisheries management regarding Red Drum or Sciaenops ocellatus in the coastal Florida area of the United States. The Red Drum, or the common name "Redfish", is a popular sport fish among anglers due to its reputation as a formidable adversary, and the value of it on the market for table fare. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The primary focus of the CCA agenda regarding management changes is in the zoning regulations imposed by the FWC. These zones are divided by a north and south sector with an increase of bag limits to be allowed in the north zone exclusively. The argument posed by CCA is that creating separate zones and increasing bag limits will jeopardize the entire management plan and place the species at risk. The CCA credits a successful 1988 campaign of prohibiting commercial harvesting and improved restriction driven by their organization. The claim is that the additional protective measures resulted in the revitalized stock assessment by the FWRI. Without these changes, they argue, the population would be in serious decline with possible change of status to "vulnerable". They also claim that a stock assessment from the FWC does not support an increase in bag limits citing Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) instead of escapement percentage. They also use data from the FWC escapement charts that indicate a declining rate over the past decade. No biological evidence exists to support a zoning status regarding the state fisheries. If a zoning regulation were to be implemented, genetic and tagging data indicates the zones to be east and west rather than the current objectives. • 39. Timpani Research Paper The timpani is a percussion instrument with the longest tradition. It's been used in a variety of music: ranging from music to symbolize the power of monarchs to church music. The tuning of the instrument has changed throughout it's lifespan. First from not being able to tune them at all, to having large, awkward screws, to having an operating pedal on the bottom to change the tension of the head (Tucmandl). The way performers tune this drum has always been improved, making it easier on the performer when on stage. The next step to improve the efficiency of tuning was made with a new way to tune, with electronics. Recently, inventor David Byrd Ribner has created a tuning and pitch control system for the timpani. This makes it almost automatic, and also makes it extremely easier for a timpanist to perform on the spot. The control system uses a position sensor that specifies a reference value corresponding to a desired timpani pitch. Then it uses a control unit applies a force on the timpani head, determining a deviation between a measured pitch value ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After a few times, it becomes easier as one knows the zone more. With the device, one can see the comparison by flicking with their eyes open, and also having two chances to flick it, since the device tells the timpanist what the pitch is and also how they need to change the pedal. That islands were invaded by outsiders whom inflicted violence, slavery, and genocide upon those that originally inhabited the islands. Its surprising that Caribbean music is aimable despite this formative background. Based on Christopher Columbus's voyage, Spain claimed the entire region as its own. This displeased natives and Spain's European neighbors which provoked a war that erupted across the islands of the Caribbean, fought by Spain, France, England, Denmark, and the Netherlands. All these battles, in addition to the diseases brought from Europe, decimated the native tribes knocking out entire cultures. Thus the Caribbean was colonized as part of the various European empires. The native culture was eroded further when the Europeans imported African slaves to work the sugar and coffee plantations on the island colonies. In multiple circumstances the native cultures and musics were replaced with those brought over from Africa. The most important instrument in Caribbean music is the drum. As well as being the foundation of African music, drums are inexpensive, simple and can be handmade with easily obtainable materials. • 49. Cymbals Research Paper In the earliest centuries of art entertainment, music was considered an expensive form of art exclusively for the upper class. As the art progressed, materials that were used for centuries in other ways became common in the musical profession. From the beginning of time to modern day music, the cymbal has progressed and improved to become one of the most versatile yet simplest instruments in any band. The progress of cymbals lies in part in the hands of those who create it as well as the materials and techniques they choose to make it. The cymbal as the world knows it today began thousands of years ago with multiple different uses and has evolved into its own art form mastered by few to invent thousands of cymbals seen in multiple music scenes across the world. The cymbal, a common percussion instrument, varies both in style and use simply by how it is constructed and the materials used to construct it. While the common person would easily mistake a cymbal to be a very simplistic and elementary instrument of the percussion family, a cymbal's size, weight, and even indention pattern can impact not only the type of cymbal, but also the sound it creates. Analysis Of The Film 'Whiplash' Stage 1 English Responding To Texts: Film Study How do the cinematic techniques (mise–en–scène, cinematography, editing, and sound design) work together in the selected scene or sequence to develop the film's central characters and themes? Damien Chazelle's Whiplash (2014) follows Andrew Neiman, a fame–driven drummer joins the studio band at a prestigious music school, Shaffer Conservatory where he is acquainted with the manipulative and vigorous Terence Fletcher who pushes him to his limits. The salient themes of volatile and manipulative student–teacher relationship, overcoming adversity and relentless pursuit of perfection are accentuated through cinematic techniques such as mise–en–scène, cinematography, and sound design and editing. The scene which exemplifies these themes are when Andrew Neiman is competing against two drummers, Ryan Connolly and Carl Tanner, to "earn the part" of becoming the main drummer of a jazz composition called Caravan (1936) composed by Duke Ellington. Chazelle's usage of mise–en– scène is used to demonstrate the important theme of volatile and manipulative student–teacher relationship. The dimly–lit room is representative of Fletchers' personality, throughout the film Fletcher is portrayed as a manipulative teacher who would go out to any means to get what he desires. The costumes used in this scene are vital to express the volatile relationship between Fletcher and his students. During this scene, Connolly is the only drummer to be ... The sounds and rhythms one can create with a drum kit are so diversified that a number of music genres can use them to create their preferred sound. The bass drum is large and when played, creates a very low pitch. More specifically we are talking about the orchestral bass drum, the smaller 'kick' drum and the pitched bass drums. • 58. Caribbean Music History The history of Caribbean music is directly correlated to the history of the Caribbean itself. That islands were invaded by outsiders whom inflicted violence, slavery, and genocide. It comes as a surprise that Caribbean music is aimable despite this formative background. Blame it on Christopher Columbus, the first European to land in this region in 1492. Based on Columbus's voyage, Spain claimed the entire region as its own. This displeased natives or Spain's European neighbors; within a few years, bloody battles raged across the islands of the Caribbean, fought by Spain, France, England, Denmark, and the Netherlands. All these battles, and diseases brought from Europe, decimated the native tribes knocking out entire cultures. Thus the Caribbean was colonized as part of the various European empires. the native culture was further eroded when the Europeans imported African slaves to work the sugar and coffee plantations on their island colonies. In multiple cases, the native cultures, and the native musics, were replaced with those brought over from Africa. The most important instrument in Caribbean music is the drum. Besides being the foundation of African music, which slaves brought with them to the area, drums are inexpensive, simple and can be handmade. Nearly all Caribbean music possesses a strong beat created by drums. Most drums are some version of the bongo or the larger congo, which is a smooth wooden drum that is played with the hands. • 60. The Musical Exploration Of Isms Introduction Mickey Hart once said, "Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine, that's what we are." Percussion is one of the oldest instrument families and has grown to a degree of vast importance in all forms of modern Western music. Namely, this is because of the incorporation of percussion into both academia and entertainment music. At first, percussion was introduced into Western Classical music during the Classical period, as a means of getting exotic and unusual sounds for composers; however, the twentieth century works brought a unique gravitation to percussion. Twentieth century composers, such as Edgar Varese and John Cage, helped pave a way for an era of music history marked by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, they were originally an elite corps of troops made up of the Sultan's loyal slaves. The corps eventually picked up the use of military bands, which was a highly esteemed military tradition. These military bands are even documented in a 1237 CE manuscript inscribed during the Crusades, which depicts two "long trumpets" and a pair of mounted "kettledrums" with battle flags and standards. The date of this manuscript indicates the Arabic and Persian heritages of one of the major instruments in the Janissary classification, the Timpani. In addition, the Ottoman Expansionism throughout the 1600's gave the Western world a large amount of exposure to the Turkish military band music and instruments. Countless militarily effective instruments were carried into Western armies, such as the Cavalry Kettledrums, or Timpani. Figure 1: Mounted Trumpeters and a Kettledrummer (Persian, 1237 CE) Timpani was the first incorporated percussion instrument in Western music. For some people it's their school, house, park, or even a friend's home. For me, my favorite place to go to is the Fine Arts Building. Every time I have ever found myself in a situation where I was greatly upset or felt unsafe I always ran to the fine arts building on UNK campus even if it meant driving half an hour. Music has always been a comforting thing and that's what the fine arts building is all about. I can go almost anywhere in the building and feel completely at home. There are three places within the building that I enjoy the most. The lobby is the hub of the music building. It is the main place for people to drink coffee and chat. Everyone in the music building lives off of coffee and almost anyone can be seen drinking some kind of caffeinated beverage. The entire building always smells like coffee in every single room. No matter how far away the room is from the coffee shop. The lobby is always filled with people chatting or working on homework or studying music scores. I know that I can always find someone willing to talk to me whenever I walk into the lobby. All along the walls are dark gray couches with little end tables separating them. During marching season, there is always an iron and a sewing kit set out on one of the small tables. The other tables are covered in other student's belongings. There are two tables centered in the lobby where there is always someone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Correlation Between Music and IQ in Children Essay 1. Introduction This project investigates the effect which the playing of a musical instrument – namely the drums – has on one's intelligence and academic ability. A search of the literature reveals that studies of this kind have been conducted by other researchers in many parts of the world and has led to the conclusion that music is an extremely healthy activity to be involved in. A study conducted on school children in America concluded that children who took voice or piano lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Dye (2012) reinforces this, stating that scientific research shows that studying music improves school performance. Gaser and Schlaug (2003) showed that musicians learn advanced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The aim of this study is to ascertain whether learning to play the drums increases one's IQ score or not. Will learners who take daily drum lessons for two weeks improve their intelligence by improving their memories and having their brains stimulated? 2. Review of Literature A number of studies showing the relationship between the playing of musical instruments and IQ development are discussed below. A few studies on the effect of drum lessons on brain development are also considered. 2.1 Correlation between Music and IQ in children In Canada, Schellenberg conducted a study on school children and college students and concluded that those who took voice or piano lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Schellenberg also studied whether the effect of an increase in IQ would continue to improve with more than a year's lessons and his most recent work has proven that this is in fact the case. The study found that young adults who had taken music lessons in childhood did have higher IQ's and better high school grades than people who didn't. He concluded that college students who had played a musical instrument regularly as children were two points ahead in IQ compared to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Why Is It Said To Be So Alive? Rapid clacking noises of the rim of the taiko drums began the opening ceremony. All I saw were bamboo sticks and mechanisms connecting my eyes and ears while my hands held the mouth. I jumped up and got in my crouching position. The bass of the taiko drums vibrated in my heels and chest; I felt alive. Adults and children, watching my partner and me, were amazed and a little scared. As I shook and swung the 20–pound lion head around, I realized my effect as a leader on the crowd. As I feasted on the cabbages, Chinese red envelopes, and oranges, I realized I was much more than just some bamboo sticks and mechanisms. On the outside, I was a lion. A golden fur bearded, red and green–eyed, rainbow–colored pom–pom covered, various art patterned lion! Boom, bang, cling. The beat of taiko drums, gongs, and cymbals rang in coordination as I ran downstairs with my friends. As we rushed, our teacher shouted at us to slow down because we can barely reach the huge steps that go downstairs, but I was excited, so I ran anyways. As I burst through the doors, I saw a colorful lion going crazy, parading around the auditorium! I stood there as my heart raced and stared at it just wondering how they were making the lion look so alive. Right then, I was instantly hooked. Two years later, when I finally graduated kindergarten, I went to first grade. I became the butt of the lion, the follower, the bottom. We drove in a grey dodge truck that would jam out to music like Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, and Pink Floyd. My dad when he was younger used to play the drums, so while we were driving he would tap the steering wheel and the fold up seat in between us with the beat of the song. Those were the first moments that my passion for drumming was fueled. By late elementary school, my parents gave me some electric drum sticks that would connected to my mp3 player and would make noise with every tap. I played those for years until I reached middle school where I adapted and found another way to show my passion. My playing really started to become ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would practice every day for about an hour, because I loved playing them that much and my parents would not let me play longer than an hour at a time due to the noise. My Sophomore year became very difficult for me. Early fall my mom had a meltdown and left home for a short period of time. It was devastating in my life. That day seemed slow and unforgiving for the emotions flying. My birthday was only a few weeks away, and as a gift my dad bought me a new cymbal for my drum kit. That day my dad decided to give me the gift early to help get through the time. I began practicing more and delving deeper into technique and focused practice instead of playing random songs. By February, two friends of mine committed suicide a month apart from each other. I was struggling to stay on top of my school work and between school and home life seemed empty and haunting. • 70. Patliness And Death In Funeral Blues, By WH Auden Funeral Blues, by WH Auden, is a poem in which the poet gives an account of his loved one who has died. He expresses feelings of sadness, loneliness, and blankness, we get to know that because of the techniques used by him. One of his phrases that show these feelings is "Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead, Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead." Here he wants to show that the terrible loss of his loved one meant a lot to him. He wants everyone to feel the way he does, that is sad. That is the reason he wants the aeroplanes to scribble the message "He is Dead" in the sky. He wants that everyone in this world should grieve because his loved one is dead. He uses metaphors such as "My working week and my Sunday rest" here the poet is comparing his lover with his working week, that is all the seven days in a week. A second effective metaphor is "dismantle the sun" where he uses the word dismantle, which is mainly used for machines or a structure. The poet here compares the sun to a machine that is to be dismantled. The poet sees the sun as a light giving machine. Infact he doesn't want any brightness and therefore he wants to dismantle the sun. He also uses hyperbole when he say "Pour away the ocean". It is a hyperbole because pouring away the vast ocean cannot be done by anyone, it is impossible to do so. It is obvious that the poet is exaggerating. He mentions this so as to express that as the fishes can't live without water even he cannot live without his lover. In short he wants the nature to express the blankness in ... African percussion items like the djembe are still used in bands today, and are being produced and sold by the biggest brands in the drum industry. There I saw the Texas State Jazz Ensemble perform with guest, Steve Houghton. The performance began at 7:30pm and lasted for an approximate hour and a half. As I observed the stage I noticed that there were a variety of instruments played in the jazz ensemble. The instruments that were played included string (grand piano, electric guitar, electric bass, bass), brass (trumpet, trombone, French horn), woodwind (tenor sax, alto sax, baritone sax) and percussion instruments (six piece drum set, bongos). On the drum set was, special guest, Steve Houghton from the music school of Iowa. Overall, there were several different pieces of different sub–genres of jazz music. The pieces that were played in the ensemble included the following: Slide's Derangement by Slide Hampton, BBC by Bob Florence, Dangerous Curves by Matt Harris, Blues for 70 by John Clayton, Jazz Crimes by Joshua Reden, Isotope by Joe Henderson, Basie's Back in Town by Ernie Wilkins. Each piece named above had its own uniqueness. The characteristics of each musical piece will be described below: Slide's Derangement started off with a solo performed by an alto sax. There were also solos performed by a trumpet and the drums. Each solo was accompanied by a melodic repetition of numerous crescendos performed by brass and woodwind instruments.
