The Role of Culture in Childrearing
Culture, representing what each individual has learned through his or her unique process of socialization, influences our theories of childrearing. Decisions about whether a 3-month-old should be allowed to "cry it out" or be picked up and soothed; when it is appropriate to begin toilet training; and where a child should sleep at night are all influenced, in part, by each individual's beliefs. According to Walden University (2011) “The world today is a world in which children are going to grow up side-by-side with people who are very, very different from them. The notion of growing up in a community of people very much like you is gone” (pg. 1). I also came across a website “
Teaching Tolerance,” where it discussed critical practices for anti-bias education and teacher leadership. This article was about the importance of valuing and embracing multiple perspectives to reach the best and most comprehensive approach to leadership. The author suggests teacher leaders reflect on what they still don’t know and need to learn about something to seek out professional development for growth in those areas; the author really promotes the idea of having self-awareness to diminish bias and become culturally aware in teacher leader practices (Learning for Justice, 2022). Both the “Walden and Teaching Tolerance” sources are about the road and progression to becoming an anti-bias educator.

The ways in which the implementation of these goals will help you to work more effectively with young children and families.
I aspire to be an anti-biased channel in which students will experience culture in a vast and more comprehensive way. Children’s experiences in education should teach the four goals of anti-bias education (i.e., identity, diversity, justice, and activism) and promote the ultimate goal of equality and social equity for all (NAEYC, n.d.). I am, the compilation of everything experienced in my life. With this, we are constantly growing, changing, adapting new view and discarding others. Each experience builds on the last to continue to reinforce the structure you are each day. As future educators, it is our job to be the future of knowledge. What we say, do, actions we take directly reflect what our students see. Choose your curriculum wisely, but choose your words even more carefully. Take the wealth of knowledge you and only your life has accumulated and share it with each class you have the chance to influence. Be the spark of change and the advocate to every child that walks through your door.

8.1 Problem Solving with Adults
Standard 1 of NAEYC's Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria (2005a) states, "The program promotes positive relationships among all children and adults to encourage each child's sense of individual worth and belonging as part of a community and to foster each child's ability to contribute as a responsible community member" (p. 9). The rationale for the standard is that positive relationships and a positive, nurturing, sensitive climate are essential for the development of emotional regulation, constructive interactions, and overall learning in children (NAEYC, 2005a). Children develop a positive sense of self, and they are encouraged to respect and cooperate with others.
However, problems, conflicts, disagreements, and distrust can—and often do—develop. These can occur between the family and the program, between staff within the programs—staff to staff, directors and staff, staff and consultants—and between children in the program. When this occurs, caregivers need to engage in problem solving. While no family or early care and education program is ever totally without conflicts and issues to solve, the goal is, firstly, to create an environment where constructive problem solving can take place and, secondly, to be able to constructively solve problems.
Feelings
Conflicts, confusion, and disagreements can cause intense feelings among those involved. To address conflicts and disagreements, we must try to determine where these feelings come from. In the heat of the moment, this will probably not be possible, but once we have had time to reflect, we need to look at the feelings that disagreements and problems produce.
We all have feelings, and it is very important to accept and appreciate these feelings. We need to reflect on our feelings and on why certain things make us feel a certain way. Feelings are complex, subjective experiences that involve physical and mental aspects of self—they can be felt, expressed, acted on, and thought about (Greenspan & Greenspan, 1985). All feelings have value and are useful—even ones we view as negative. Feelings are how we react to experiences, and they help us organize and make sense of our world. The great works of art, music, drama, and dance are based on feelings—some pleasant, and some dark and tragic.
We learn about feelings from our childhood experiences. When children are young, adults label the child's emotions: "That bang scared you!" "The dog's bark upset you!" Part of this socialization process is to help children know how to respond to the environment—for safety, to develop appropriate reactions to the environment, and to teach children culturally appropriate responses to their feelings. Other feelings, such as those of love, trust, fear, excitement, and surprise, are natural responses to the environment that help us feel good about ourselves and the social environment (Rogers, 1980).

SYNOPSIS
This article first introduces some main ideas behind culture and parenting and next addresses
philosophical rationales and methodological considerations central to cultural approaches to
parenting, including a brief account of a cross-cultural study of parenting. It then focuses
on universals, specifics, and distinctions between form (behavior) and function (meaning)
in parenting as embedded in culture. The article concludes by pointing to social policy
implications as well as future directions prompted by a cultural approach to parenting.
INTRODUCTION
Every culture is characterized, and distinguished from other cultures, by deeply rooted
and widely acknowledged ideas about how one needs to feel, think, and act as a
functioning member of the culture. Cross-cultural study affirms that groups of people
possess different beliefs and engage in different behaviors that may be normative in
their culture but are not necessarily normative in another culture. Cultural groups thus
embody particular characteristics that are deemed essential or advantageous to their

backgrounds. But because culture is absorbed and passed down from generation
to generation rather than explicitly taught, were seldom aware of it.
Culture shapes not only our values and beliefs, but also our gender roles, family
structures, languages, dress, food, etiquette, approaches to disabilities, child-
rearing practices, and even our expectations for childrens behavior. In this way,
culture creates diversity.
For teachers, it is essential to see and understand your own culture in order to see

Think about your own upbringing. How did your familys expectations affect what
you did? Were your parents, siblings, and other relatives close or distant? Were

One major takeaway from the position statement is that early childhood educators
must support consistently warm and caring relationships between families and their
children, respect families languages and cultures, and incorporate those languages
and cultures into the curriculum, their teaching practices, and the learning
environment.
Children bring their own set of culturally based expectations, skills, talents, abilities,
and values with them into the classroom. And they begin to develop their self-
concept (at least in part) from how others see them. To form positive self-concepts,
children must honor and respect their own families and cultures and have others
honor and respect these key facets of their identities too. If the classroom doesnt
reflect and validate their families and cultures, children may feel invisible,
unimportant, incompetent, and ashamed of who they are.
Many people, including educators, have long believed it is better to act colorblind
and/or cultureblindthat is, to not acknowledge color or culture. But research has
shown that this artificial blindness keeps us from recognizing, acknowledging, and
appreciating important differences. Worse, it may lead to unintentional bias toward
or disrespect for those who are different from us.
We know now that acknowledgments of color and culture are essential for
legitimizing differences. Color and culture make each one of us special and enable
us to offer unique gifts and opportunities to groups we are part of. At the same time,
color and culture help children learn about each other and the world. In short, color
and culture enrich classrooms.
To appreciate what each child can contribute to the class, teachers need to learn

There are multifaceted ethical issues relating to international investments. One aspect relates to human rights. Most Latin American governments have constitutions that mandate health care as a human right, yet some of these countries provide poor health care for the majority of their population.
During the 1980s, the general populace of these countries deteriorated, even though several Latin American countries developed strategies to reposition medical personnel and services to rural areas. Throughout this time, many international donors provided assistance; however they did so with imposed conditions. An example of this constrained assistance was the World Bank, which imposed restrictions that included privatization of health care, as well as required limitations on universal access.

Who has the responsibility for the health care of the Latin American people? Teaching Tolerance,” where it discussed critical practices for anti-bias education and teacher leadership. This article was about the importance of valuing and embracing multiple perspectives to reach the best and most comprehensive approach to leadership. The author suggests teacher leaders reflect on what they still don’t know and need to learn about something to seek out professional development for growth in those areas; the author really promotes the idea of having self-awareness to diminish bias and become culturally aware in teacher leader practices (Learning for Justice, 2022). Both the “Walden and Teaching Tolerance” sources are about the road and progression to becoming an anti-bias educator.

I aspire to be an anti-biased channel in which students will experience culture in a vast and more comprehensive way. Children’s experiences in education should teach the four goals of anti-bias education (i.e., identity, diversity, justice, and activism) and promote the ultimate goal of equality and social equity for all (NAEYC, n.d.). I am, the compilation of everything experienced in my life. With this, we are constantly growing, changing, adapting new view and discarding others. Each experience builds on the last to continue to reinforce the structure you are each day. As future educators, it is our job to be the future of knowledge. What we say, do, actions we take directly reflect what our students see. Choose your curriculum wisely, but choose your words even more carefully. Take the wealth of knowledge you and only your life has accumulated and share it with each class you have the chance to influence. Be the spark of change and the advocate to every child that walks through your door.

Standard 1 of NAEYC's Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria (2005a) states, "The program promotes positive relationships among all children and adults to encourage each child's sense of individual worth and belonging as part of a community and to foster each child's ability to contribute as a responsible community member" (p. 9). The rationale for the standard is that positive relationships and a positive, nurturing, sensitive climate are essential for the development of emotional regulation, constructive interactions, and overall learning in children (NAEYC, 2005a). Children develop a positive sense of self, and they are encouraged to respect and cooperate with others.
However, problems, conflicts, disagreements, and distrust can—and often do—develop. These can occur between the family and the program, between staff within the programs—staff to staff, directors and staff, staff and consultants—and between children in the program. When this occurs, caregivers need to engage in problem solving. While no family or early care and education program is ever totally without conflicts and issues to solve, the goal is, firstly, to create an environment where constructive problem solving can take place and, secondly, to be able to constructively solve problems.
Feelings
Conflicts, confusion, and disagreements can cause intense feelings among those involved. To address conflicts and disagreements, we must try to determine where these feelings come from. In the heat of the moment, this will probably not be possible, but once we have had time to reflect, we need to look at the feelings that disagreements and problems produce.
We all have feelings, and it is very important to accept and appreciate these feelings. We need to reflect on our feelings and on why certain things make us feel a certain way. Feelings are complex, subjective experiences that involve physical and mental aspects of self—they can be felt, expressed, acted on, and thought about (Greenspan & Greenspan, 1985). All feelings have value and are useful—even ones we view as negative. Feelings are how we react to experiences, and they help us organize and make sense of our world. The great works of art, music, drama, and dance are based on feelings—some pleasant, and some dark and tragic.
We learn about feelings from our childhood experiences. When children are young, adults label the child's emotions: "That bang scared you!" "The dog's bark upset you!" Part of this socialization process is to help children know how to respond to the environment—for safety, to develop appropriate reactions to the environment, and to teach children culturally appropriate responses to their feelings. Other feelings, such as those of love, trust, fear, excitement, and surprise, are natural responses to the environment that help us feel good about ourselves and the social environment (Rogers, 1980).

This article first introduces some main ideas behind culture and parenting and next addresses
philosophical rationales and methodological considerations central to cultural approaches to
parenting, including a brief account of a cross-cultural study of parenting. It then focuses
on universals, specifics, and distinctions between form (behavior) and function (meaning)
in parenting as embedded in culture. The article concludes by pointing to social policy
implications as well as future directions prompted by a cultural approach to parenting.
INTRODUCTION
Every culture is characterized, and distinguished from other cultures, by deeply rooted
and widely acknowledged ideas about how one needs to feel, think, and act as a
functioning member of the culture. Cross-cultural study affirms that groups of people

to generation rather than explicitly taught, were seldom aware of it.
Culture shapes not only our values and beliefs, but also our gender roles, family
structures, languages, dress, food, etiquette, approaches to disabilities, child-

One major takeaway from the position statement is that early childhood educators
must support consistently warm and caring relationships between families and their
children, respect families languages and cultures, and incorporate those languages
and cultures into the curriculum, their teaching practices, and the learning
environment.
Children bring their own set of culturally based expectations, skills, talents, abilities,
and values with them into the classroom. And they begin to develop their self-
concept (at least in part) from how others see them. To form positive self-concepts,
children must honor and respect their own families and cultures and have others
honor and respect these key facets of their identities too. If the classroom doesnt
reflect and validate their families and cultures, children may feel invisible,
unimportant, incompetent, and ashamed of who they are.
Many people, including educators, have long believed it is better to act colorblind
and/or cultureblindthat is, to not acknowledge color or culture. But research has
shown that this artificial blindness keeps us from recognizing, acknowledging, and
appreciating important differences. Worse, it may lead to unintentional bias toward
or disrespect for those who are different from us.
We know now that acknowledgments of color and culture are essential for
legitimizing differences. Color and culture make each one of us special and enable
us to offer unique gifts and opportunities to groups we are part of. At the same time,
color and culture help children learn about each other and the world. In short, color
and culture enrich classrooms.
To appreciate what each child can contribute to the class, teachers need to learn

Two great European writers of the nineteenth century, Ivan Turgenev and Karl Marx,
illustrate this diversity with vivid clarity. Both were born in 1818 and died in 1883, and
their lives paralleled each other almost preternaturally in many other respects as well.
They nevertheless came to view human life and suffering in very different, indeed
irreconcilable, ways—through different ends of the telescope, as it were. Turgenev saw
human beings as individuals always endowed with consciousness, character, feelings,
and moral strengths and weaknesses; Marx saw them always as snowflakes in an
avalanche, as instances of general forces, as not yet fully human because utterly
conditioned by their circumstances. Where Turgenev saw men, Marx saw classes of men;
where Turgenev saw people, Marx saw the People. These two ways of looking at the
world persist into our own time and profoundly affect, for better or for worse, the
solutions we propose to our social problems.
The resemblances between the careers of these men begin with their attendance at Berlin
University at overlapping times, where both were deeply affected—even intoxicated—by
the prevailing Hegelianism. As a result, both considered careers as university teachers of
philosophy, but neither ever held a university post. They had many acquaintances in

common in Berlin, including Mikhail Bakunin, the Russian aristocrat who later became a
revolutionary anarchist, the philosopher Bruno Bauer, and the radical poet Georg
Herwegh. They shared a carelessness with money, perhaps because they were both born
into easy circumstances and therefore assumed that money would never be a problem.
Both started their writing careers as romantic poets, though more of Turgenev’s poetry
than Marx’s was published.
Their literary influences and tastes were similar. Each read widely in the Greek and Latin
classics; each could quote Shakespeare in the original. Both learned Spanish in order to
read Calderón. (Turgenev, of course, also learned it to speak the native language of the
great, but unsatisfactory, love of his life, the famous prima donna Pauline Viardot.) The
two men were in Brussels at the outbreak of the 1848 revolution against the July

theme throughout this course has been that human and social services professionals constantly apply theories and processes to address issues and challenges. As a social change agent, leader, and advocate, you should be able to apply relevant theories and processes to implement and support change on a local and global scale. As always, codes of ethics should provide guidance as you attempt to bring about change. As the final step in the development of your strategic plan, you will develop an action plan for each year of the strategic plan. For example, your plan might start off with strategic goals at the local level with plans to take these goals national or international in following years of the strategic plan.
To prepare:
Review the feedback from your Instructor regarding the components of your strategic plan in Weeks 3, 4, and 6–8.
You should make any changes based on the feedback you received. You will include these elements as a whole this week for your final strategic plan.
Finally this week, consider what actions you will take each year of the strategic plan.
The Assignment (15–22 pages):
Guidelines for each section of the Assignment are provided below.
Part I. The Fundamentals (3–4 pages):
The fundamentals of a strategic plan include identifying the core values, mission, and vision, which represent the organizational identification (ID). The Assignment requires you to develop the organizational ID for the agency, organization, or community for which you will develop a strategic plan.
Identify and describe the core values of the agency.
Discuss the degree to which those core values are aligned with advocacy, leadership, or social change.
Explain how those core values contribute to the well-being of individuals, groups, societies, or international communities.
Identify and describe the mission of the agency, organization, or community.
Evaluate whether the mission statement is aligned with the core values of the agency, organization, etc.
Describe whether the mission statement promotes advocacy, leadership, or social change.
Discuss whether the mission statement provides evidence of how the agency/organization contributes to the well-being of individuals, groups, societies, or international communities.
Identify and describe the vision of the agency.
Evaluate whether the vision is aligned with the core values of the agency, organization, etc.
Describe whether the vision promotes advocacy, leadership, or social change.
Discuss whether the vision provides evidence of how the agency/organization contributes to the well-being of individuals, groups, societies, or international communities.
Identify and describe key stakeholders involved with the agency.
Discuss whether each stakeholder is internal or external to the agency/organization.

For this assignment, research an environmental factor that poses a threat to the health or safety of infants and develop a health promotion that can be presented to caregivers.
Create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint health promotion, with speaker notes, that outlines a teaching plan. For the presentation of your PowerPoint, use Loom to create a voice over or a video. Include an additional slide for the Loom link at the beginning, and an additional slide for references at the end.
Include the following in your presentation:
Describe the selected environmental factor. Explain how the environmental factor you selected can potentially affect the health or safety of infants.
Create a health promotion plan that can be presented to caregivers to address the environmental factor and improve the overall health and well-being of infants.
Offer recommendations on accident prevention and safety promotion as they relate to the selected environmental factor and the health or safety of infants.
Offer examples, interventions, and suggestions from evidence-based research. At least three scholarly resources are required. Two of the three resources must be peer-reviewed and no more than 6 years old.
Provide readers with two community resources, a national resource, and a Web-based resource. Include a brief description and contact information for each resource.
In developing your PowerPoint, take into consideration the health care literacy level of your target audience, as well as the demographic of the caregiver/patient (socioeconomic level, language, culture, and any other relevant characteristic of the caregiver) for which the presentation is tailored
Refer to the resource, "Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations," located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style.
