Final Project: Cultural Immersion
Cultural Competence is an essential aspect of counselor training. In order to begin to understand a culture, it is essential to have sustained interaction with the culture. For the final project for this course, each student will be responsible for actively investigating multicultural issues in the “real world,” by gradually immersing in a culture different from their own. The immersion project will involve experiential learning about other cultures. The intent is to increase your knowledge and sensitivity to other cultures.
In order to complete this project successfully, you will need to work on it throughout the entire course. As part of the project, each of you will select a culture different from your own and participate in at least three distinct cultural immersion experiences/observations within that culture. The idea is to gradually immerse into the different culture over the course of the term. You may use the list of suggestions below to guide your immersion process or you can devise some ideas of your own. It is essential that each experience is qualitatively different from that of your own culture and that the experiences gradually become more involved directly with the culture of choice.
1. The activities you select must include active involvement in the culture/activity. In other words, you may “observe” the culture but you may not limit the activity to passive observation. Make sure that each activity involves interaction with members of the culture, either through active participation in the activity itself or through conversations with members of the culture. Of course your third activity, the personal dialogue, already requires your active participation.
2. Submit a written narrative of your immersion activities. The paper will be 8-10 pages long (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font), This paper must include the following elements:
· Identification and Description of Population: This section must clearly identify the population you will be studying, how this population is different from you, and what your perceptions of this group are at this point in life. The description of differences should include both the obvious (visible differences, etc.) and the not so obvious (religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.). Please state all the differences you can identify. Your perceptions of this group should include information such as what you were told about this group as you were growing up, any beliefs/perceptions/assumptions you have about this group, what your sources of information about this group have been in the past, and why you have an interest in this group. Cultural diversity in the workforce involves multilingual colleagues, gender, religion, age, ethnicity, etc. but the lesson plan that I would like to write about is involving colleagues that are multilingual. In today’s society and in our country; speaking more than one language is a great privilege, benefit, and provides many opportunities. It is estimated that over 50 million people speak Spanish either as their primary language or secondary here in the United States of America. As a changing demographic and workforce; it’s of importance to be culturally aware and culturally competent as nurses in our skills, abilities, and experiences. To start our lesson, I’d like to gather employees together and encourage to speak about is common and unique in their culture and welcome different ideas and viewpoints. Next, id like everyone to share a story of either of a time of how they felt respected (of their culture) or the opposite; a time they can share with us of a misjudgment, disrespectful, or treated inferiorly. After these questions and stories are shared; I would like to encourage them to use this a learning experience of each other and how to be mindful and apply this out in the real world. Whether one needs to dissect and identify and prejudice or concerns them have about themselves or how we can all improve and be better individuals by being more aware and cognizant of our surrounding, diversity, and be culturally competent nurses. Common potentials of barriers to learning are getting out of your comfort zone and possibly a negative past experience (that can be hard to overcome). ‘Feedback must be specific, not general. According to Walden University (2011) “The world today is a world in which children are going to grow up side-by-side with people who are very, very different from them. The notion of growing up in a community of people very much like you is gone” (pg. 1). I also came across a website “
Teaching Tolerance,” where it discussed critical practices for anti-bias education and teacher leadership. This article was about the importance of valuing and embracing multiple perspectives to reach the best and most comprehensive approach to leadership. The author suggests teacher leaders reflect on what they still don’t know and need to learn about something to seek out professional development for growth in those areas; the author really promotes the idea of having self-awareness to diminish bias and become culturally aware in teacher leader practices (Learning for Justice, 2022). Both the “Walden and Teaching Tolerance” sources are about the road and progression to becoming an anti-bias educator.

I aspire to be an anti-biased channel in which students will experience culture in a vast and more comprehensive way. Children’s experiences in education should teach the four goals of anti-bias education (i.e., identity, diversity, justice, and activism) and promote the ultimate goal of equality and social equity for all (NAEYC, n.d.). I am, the compilation of everything experienced in my life. With this, we are constantly growing, changing, adapting new view and discarding others. Each experience builds on the last to continue to reinforce the structure you are each day. As future educators, it is our job to be the future of knowledge. What we say, do, actions we take directly reflect what our students see. Choose your curriculum wisely, but choose your words even more carefully. Take the wealth of knowledge you and only your life has accumulated and share it with each class you have the chance to influence. Be the spark of change and the advocate to every child that walks through your door.

In the article “Beyond the Illusion of Diversity: How Early Childhood Teachers Can Promote Social Justice,” Boutte speaks of the need for early childhood professionals to apply pedagogical principles and classroom practices that more explicitly cultivate inclusive practices. She states that these efforts promote social justice, and passionately advocates that early childhood professionals should be provided with, and seek out, opportunities and resources that support their interactions with children and families from diverse backgrounds. As well, Boutte points out that any major issue or trend, for example, changing demographics and diversity, usually consists of a number of smaller, related issues. Understanding these different but related issues increases a person’s ability to interact with others in a respectful, caring, and authentic manner.
As you might already know, achieving professional “fluency” about the complexity of issues and trends is a lifelong process. With the help of this assignment, you can take a step toward such fluency with regard to changing demographics and diversity. According to Walden University (2011) “The world today is a world in which children are going to grow up side-by-side with people who are very, very different from them. The notion of growing up in a community of people very much like you is gone” (pg. 1). I also came across a website “
Teaching Tolerance,” where it discussed critical practices for anti-bias education and teacher leadership. This article was about the importance of valuing and embracing multiple perspectives to reach the best and most comprehensive approach to leadership. The author suggests teacher leaders reflect on what they still don’t know and need to learn about something to seek out professional development for growth in those areas; the author really promotes the idea of having self-awareness to diminish bias and become culturally aware in teacher leader practices (Learning for Justice, 2022). Both the “Walden and Teaching Tolerance” sources are about the road and progression to becoming an anti-bias educator.

I aspire to be an anti-biased channel in which students will experience culture in a vast and more comprehensive way. Children’s experiences in education should teach the four goals of anti-bias education (i.e., identity, diversity, justice, and activism) and promote the ultimate goal of equality and social equity for all (NAEYC, n.d.). I am, the compilation of everything experienced in my life. With this, we are constantly growing, changing, adapting new view and discarding others. Each experience builds on the last to continue to reinforce the structure you are each day. As future educators, it is our job to be the future of knowledge. What we say, do, actions we take directly reflect what our students see. Choose your curriculum wisely, but choose your words even more carefully. Take the wealth of knowledge you and only your life has accumulated and share it with each class you have the chance to influence. Be the spark of change and the advocate to every child that walks through your door.

She states that these efforts promote social justice, and passionately advocates that early childhood professionals should be provided with, and seek out, opportunities and resources that support their interactions with children and families from diverse backgrounds. As well, Boutte points out that any major issue or trend, for example, changing demographics and diversity, usually consists of a number of smaller, related issues. Understanding these different but related issues increases a person’s ability to interact with others in a respectful, caring, and authentic manner.
As you might already know, achieving professional “fluency” about the complexity of issues and trends is a lifelong process. With the help of this assignment, you can take a step toward such fluency with regard to changing demographics and diversity. First, you will be asked to learn about a specific issue by reading about it; then extend your knowledge by talking to someone who has experience with this issue; and finally, reflect on what you have learned with the help of the “awareness tool."
