2. Even though this poster is
for a TV series, I still find it
really effective and think it’s
a very well thought about
poster.
The image chosen for this
poster is what really grabbed
my attention. The hand is
directly in the middle of the
poster, and stands out from
the plain background. When
you focus on the hand, you
realise the blood dripping
down this. This sparks
curiosity as we think “Why is
there blood on that hand?”
making us want to watch it.
The hand sign shows irony, as
the sign usually used for peace
is seen spattered in blood,
which does not resemble
peace. This is a clever technique
as it makes the audience think
into the deeper meaning of the
poster and what it could
suggest.
The name shown on the top of
the poster in large text is the
name of the main actor in the
film. The font used looks very slick
and almost ‘historical’ as it looks
like engraved writing that you see
on important building such as
museums. This again links to the
content in the TV series subtly.
The upside down United States
flag at the bottom of the poster
could also suggest a deeper
meaning. For example it could
suggest the overturning of the
United States government, or
something along those lines. I
like this because it makes the
reader think further and further
into the poster and the only way
to find out is by watching the
series.
Overall I think this is one of the best posters I have
seen, and it shows that with political dramas more
well thought about clues that are shown on the poster
work well in making people intrigued and therefore
making them want to watch it.
3. This poster uses an iconic
building to interest and impact
the audience. The White House
is shown in flames and with
parts of it falling to the ground.
This will make people think why
has this happened, and also
creates a scary tone as it is a very
famous building so something
like this happening is extremely
serious.
Again, symbolism is used in this
poster to show a deeper
meaning. The ripped up, falling
US flag could represent the
country in a state of disaster and
vulnerability. This again shows
the deeper meaning into the
poster and film which may
interest people who see this
poster and make them want to
watch the film.
The tag line “We are never
stronger than when we are
tested” is very dramatic and
makes the audience think how
they are being tested. Also the
personal pronoun ‘we’ makes
the audience feel like they are
being addressed along with
everyone else.
The low angle used in the picture
makes the building look big and
powerful, but also puts us in the
perspective of if we were actually
standing in front of the building
how it would look which is a really
good technique that I think I'm
going to use when planning my
poster.
This poster has shown me that the
camera angle a picture is taken at
can also have a large effect on the
audience as it can make them feel a
certain way about something so you
can through using camera angles
right, influence the audience to feel a
certain way.
4. This poster is very different
to the other two, however
it is still quite powerful in
the way that the poster is
less colourful and busy but
is still impactful. The black
and white image makes us
think that it may be in the
past, but also makes the
poster look more serious.
The side profile that the
picture is taken from means
that we cant see his full
expression.
The fact that he isn't
looking straight forward at
the camera is also different,
as most posters that have
the main character on the
front have them looking like
they are staring straight
through the poster to have
more of a persuasive effect.
The font that the name of the film is
written in again looks historical, like the
font that is used when a important date
on name is carved into stone. This
picture I found of a memorial opened
by the Queen has a similar font so it
links in with the historical/political
theme that the film has.
5. Findings…
• From looking at the posters from our genre in depth it has given me some
good ideas about what I want and what I don’t want in our poster.
• From looking at the House of Cards poster, I really like how they used
symbolism to give the poster a deeper meaning. Even though its just a
poster, its really interesting and I think its very powerful in getting people
to watch it. I know this because now from seeing it has made me want to
watch it as it really made me think.
• Also from looking at posters such as the Lincoln one it has shown me that
sometimes less is more. The less shown, the more curious it can make you
in wanting to find out what the film is about.
• Looking at these posters has also made me think about little things such as
font and tag lines and how they can be subtly linked to the genre/storyline
of the film.
