Condenser
 Condenser is an important component of any cyclic refrigeration
system
 A condenser is a device or unit used to condense
a substance from its gaseous to its liquid state by cooling
 The condenser is a heat exchanger that usually reject all heat from
the system.
 The condenser is usually air cooled by natural or forced convection
to increase the cooling effect of the condenser.
One of the main functions of the condenser is to condense the
refrigerant sent to it from the compressor. However, the
condenser also has other functions.
The three main functions of the condenser are:
1. Desuperheating.
2. Condensing.
3. Sub cooling.
Based on the external fluid , condensers can be classified as
a) Air cooled condensers
b) Water cooled condensers
c) Evaporative condensers

In these condensers , air is the external fluid , i.e. the refri
gerant reject heat to air flowing over the condensers
Air cooled condensers can be further classified as
i.Natural convection type
ii.Forced convection type

 Heat transfer from the condensers is by buoyancy induced
natural convection and also by radiation
 Since the flow rate of air is small and radiation heat transfer is
also not very high
 The combined heat transfer co efficient is small
 It is relatively large condensing surface is required to reject a
given amount of heat.
 Hence these are used for small capacity refrigeration system
like households refrigeration and freezers.

The natural convection type are as
i. Plate surface type convection condensers
ii. Finned tube type convection condensers

 In plate surface type condensers used in small refrigerators and
freezers.
 The refrigerant carrying tubes are attached to the outer walls of
the cabinet.
 The whole body of a refrigerators acts as a like a fin (except door)
 The insulation is provided between the outer and inner layer and
these the inner layer is normally warm.
 In forced air convection type condensers , the circulation
of air over the condensers surface is maintained by
using a fan or blower.
 These condenser normally use fins on air side for the
good heat transfer.
 The fins can be either plate type or annular type.
 Forced convection type air cooled condensers are
commonly used in window air conditioners , water
coolers and packaged air conditioning plants.
Forced convection condensers are either chassis mounted
(condensing unit) or remote mounted.
The air velocity varies between 2 m/s to 3.8 m/s for design
with airflow rates of 12 to m3/min per TR.
The area of condensers seen from the outside in the airflow
friction is called face area.
The velocity at the face is given by the volume flow rate
divided by the flow area.
In water cooled condensers water is used as a external flui

Depending upon the construction , water cooled condenser
s can be further classified into
1)Double type or tube type
2)Shell and coil type
3)Shell and tube type

 Normally used up to 10 TR capacity
 In these condensers the cold water flows through the
inner tube , while the refrigerant flows through the
annulus
 The refrigerant in the annulus rejects a parts of its heat
to the surroundings by free convection and radiation
 The heat transfer co-efficient is usually low because of
poor refrigerant drainaged .
 It is used in system up 50 TR capacity
 The water flows through multiple coils which may have
fins to increase the heat transfer co-efficient
 The refrigerant flows through the shell
 In smaller capacity condensers refrigerant flows through
coils while water flows through the shell
 This is the most common type of condenser used in
systems from 2 TR up to thousand of TR capacity
 In these condensers , the refrigerant flows through the
shell while water flows the through the tubes in single
for passes.
 The condensed refrigerant collects at the bottom of the
shell.
 In evaporative condenser both air and water are used to
extract heat from the condensing refrigerant
 Evaporative condensers combine the features of a coolig
tower and the water cooled condenser in a single unit
 Water is sprayed from the top part on a banle of tubes
carrying the refrigerant and air is induced upwords
 There is a thin water flim around the condenser tubes
form which evaporative cooling takes place
