Chapter I. INTRODUCTION
All over the world people live who want to realize their wishes and desires by
founding a new company. Furthermore, the interest regarding to entrepreneurship rises.
Many academies give classes about how to create and handle ideas, start a business and
communicate necessarily know how, although working for a fast-growing firm seems to be
easier than to start an own business. The decision to become self-employed is among
others affected by various factors that have an impact with different intensities on
individuals.
Entrepreneurship is central to the functioning of market economies. Entrepreneurs
are agents of change and growth in a market economy and they can act to accelerate the
generation, dissemination and application of innovative ideas. In doing so, they not only
ensure that efficient use is made of resources, but also expand the boundaries of
economic activity. Entrepreneurs not only seek out and identify potentially profitable
economic opportunities but are also willing to take risks to see if their hunches are right.
While not all entrepreneurs succeed, a country with a lot of entrepreneurial activity is likely
to be constantly generating new or improved products and services.
International
International Entrepreneurship occurs when an entrepreneur travels to other nations to
run and operate their firm. These are the industries that operate beyond national borders.
Exporting goods, licensing, and opening a sales office in another country are
all examples of entrepreneurship. Under this, an entrepreneur conducts all business
operations outside of the country's borders, indicating the expansion of the firm on a
global scale. The majority of enterprises transcend national borders to build value. A

diverse range of inventive actions carried out by the majority of firms across borders,
enhancing those prospects to generate some new items and services.
Entrepreneurship is one of the most important driving factors behind the rise of
economies, individual and regional wealth, and social progress. It will only occur in
developing and rising markets centred on both commercial sectors and democratic political
institutions. Another compelling reason to pursue international entrepreneurship is that if a
company's local sales are relatively low, it is preferable to expand beyond national borders.
When a high degree of maturity has been attained in the home market, it is the optimum
moment to transition to international entrepreneurship and maximise profits.
In a summary, International Entrepreneurship is described as the worldwide
development of a new business, with their operation domain regarded internationally from
the very first phases of operations.
Global entrepreneurships monitor and its most recent data from 2013 shows that
the level of entrepreneurial activity in Indonesia is high; furthermore, it is notable that both
men and women are equally likely to be engaged in entrepreneurial activities. On the other
hand, the United States has only twelve percent of entrepreneurial intentions, also known
as the tendency, to be entrepreneurs. It is often argued that this dynamism and flexibility
has enabled the US economy to adapt to changing economic circumstances
and recover from recessions in a robust manner. While the evidence provides broad
support for this view, the outcomes of entrepreneurship are more heterogeneous than
commonly appreciated and appear to be evolving in ways that could raise concern.
Evidence along a number of dimensions and a variety of sources points to a US economy
that is becoming less dynamic of particular interest are declining business startup rates

and the resulting diminished role for dynamic young businesses in the economy.
In today's era, the global aspiration of an entrepreneur is Entrepreneurship, and
after the firm has covered all regions inside its own country, they will consider going on to
International Entrepreneurship. It is beneficial to increase business values in the home
market. There are 582 million entrepreneurs worldwide (MARKINBLOG, 2020). Though
they may be found all over the world, there are a few regions where entrepreneurs, both
present and prospective, congregate. This is mostly due to the excellent assistance and
infrastructure provided by these locations. The World Bank's Ease of Doing Business index
ranks economies according to how receptive they are to new businesses. In the 2019
edition, New Zealand was placed #1 out of the 189 nations and territories studied.
Singapore, Hong Kong, Denmark, and South Korea are the next in line. Otherwise, the US
is placed sixth on the list, with particularly excellent scores in the categories of ease of
resolving insolvency (second) and accessing credit (third) (fourth).
On the other hand, several sectors, such as Coca-Cola, Nike, McDonald's, BMW,
Puma, Philips, and Tata, have created countless multinational entrepreneurs. However,
the most well-known entrepreneurs come from the technological world, where they began
with a tiny endeavour and grew it to a worldwide scale. Apple was founded by Steve Jobs,
Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates,
Facebook was founded by Mark Zukerberg, Yahoo was founded by Jerry Yang and David
Filo, Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos, Alibaba was founded by Jack Ma, and Tiktok
was founded by Zhang Yiming.

Entrepreneurship in the Philippines ( National)
The Philippine Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report for 2006-2007 has documented
the profile of Filipino entrepreneurs (Madarang & Habito, 2007). According to the report,
39.4% of Filipinos are engaged in entrepreneurial activities. Fifty-two percent of these
entrepreneurs are engaged in early stage activity or in business between 3 months to 3.5
years. Forty-eight percent are established businesses existing for more than 3.5 years.
Businesses have an average capital of P10,000. A typical Filipino entrepreneur is male,
married, 25-44 years old, high school graduate, and comes from the low income group.
They are driven by necessity and more than half are engaged in retail trade. There is very
little application of technology and minimal use of innovation. Seventy percent are
engaged in businesses that do not generate employment since the entrepreneur assumes
all the functions of the business. Most of the businesses employ less than four employees
and very few have 20 employees or more. Filipino entrepreneurship has very poor
employment generation activity. Business engagement is only done on a local basis and
very few are engaged in exportation. There is very little growth and long-term view of the
business. However, Filipino entrepreneurs see business opportunities and are highly
confident that they have the knowledge and skills needed to do business. Yet in what
seems to be a contradictory attitude, they fear failure and have a very low tendency to
take risks.
Local
Community-based entrepreneurship is considered to be an important instrument
for the realization of potential among marginal and deprived communities isolated from
the mainstream economy and is important in bringing social upliftment. Cultural values,
shared resources, linkages, and mutual trust work for the community, nurtured through

close personal relations for the functioning of economic activities. Entrepreneurial
activities creating local public goods for a community have a comparative advantage over
the absolute market-oriented activities. The micro-businesses and small business owners
in Ilocos Norte is relatively young dominated by college graduate and married women.
Most of them have not attended seminars and training and are not members of
professional organizations. The small business owners, on the other hand, are also
relatively young, dominated by college graduate and married men. They have attended
seminars and trainings and are members of professional organizations. Majority of the
micro-businesses in Ilocos Norte have existed for less than 5 years engaged in retailing
and are sole proprietor. Majority of the micro-businesses in Ilocos Norte started with less
than P 500,000.00 as initial capital from their savings and hired 1-2 employees who are
usually family members. Lastly, they are averaging below P 150,000 annual sales.
On the other hand, small businesses in Ilocos Norte have existed for at least five
years and are engaged in retailing and are sole proprietors. Majority of them have at least
10 employees. Micro business and small business owners have the capability to handle
and manage businesses as revealed by their level in the personal entrepreneurial

small business owners observe high level of management practices.
With this, local entrepreneurs’ purposes is to alleviate poverty, development
agencies and multinational organizations have been greatly involved in interventions in
the developing world for many decades. It has been observed that the most widely

adopted approaches have often been paternalistic, even if unintentionally, while ignoring
the strength of local institutions (Davis 1993). Most of the poverty alleviation programs
have degenerated into “charity” rather than building the local and durable self-reliance
(Burkey, 1993). It is evident that the real effect of developmental interventions has been
compromising in respect to community development and eventually contributes to the
creation of real poverty rather than alleviation (Cornwall 1998; Crewe, and Harrison 1998;
Sachs 1992).
Therefore, entrepreneurs occupy a dominant position in the economy.
Entrepreneurs actively pursue disequilibrium in the wants and needs of customers, and the
goods and services that are available. They use their energy, creativity, intrinsic
motivation, and passion to generate a solution to this imbalance in a market place, and
thus businesses are born. However, entrepreneurship is not an end location, but a
process.
Chapter II. STORIES OF SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS
A. INTERNATIONAL
A.1 Michael Kors
1.1 Quick Facts
Michael David Kors (born Karl Anderson Jr.) is the honorary chairman
and chief executive officer of the luxurious brand Michael Kors with a net worth
as of 2021 at $600 million. He is born on August 9, 1959 at Long Island, New
York. His mother is Joan Hamburger and his biological father is Karl Anderson

Sr. His biological parents separated and his mother met businessman Bill Kors
and his mother suggested that he changed his first name as he was also getting
his last name changed. Michael Kors is married to his long time gay partner
Lance La Pere who was the vice president of Michael Kors Women’s Design in
August 2011.
1.2 Education
Kors attended high school at John F. Kennedy High School and attended
Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 1970s. He preferred the city
more than the school that is why he dropped out after two semesters. Later on
he began working at Lothar's, a French boutique, in 1978, where he was able
to design and retail his first fashion collection. Kors was able to launch his own
fashion line as a result of the well-received collection. Michael Kors' Women's
Collection debuted in May 1981 and was offered at Bergdorf Goodman and
Saks Fifth Avenue, among other high-end boutiques.

1.3 Work History
Kors' winning combination of basic, exquisitely cut apparel and sweetly
compelling sales skills proven to be a winning one. Kors performed "trunk
shows" at private houses across the United States. He persuaded Anna
Wintour, then the editor of New York magazine and now the editor of Vogue, to
see his collection when he was 23 years old. Kors showed the collection on his
bed in his flat, rather than in the glamorous Madison Avenue displays he would
eventually have. From humble beginnings, he quickly gained famous fans,
including Barbara Walters, and won accolades for his designs.
Kors' company, however, was forced to reorganize under Chapter 11
bankruptcy in 1990. Kors established KORS Michael Kors, a lower-priced line,
after regaining his footing. In 1997, he was named creative director of Celine, a
French fashion house. He proceeded to grow his own brand during his six years
in that post, creating menswear, accessories, and perfume lines. In 2003, he
received the Council of Fashion Designers of America's renowned Menswear
Designer of the Year award, the highest honor in American fashion.
1.4 Brief Background of Business and Products Offered
As of today, Michael Kors is a world-renowned, award-winning designer
of luxury accessories and ready-to-wear. His namesake company, established
in 1981, currently produces a range of products under Michael Kors Collection,
MICHAEL Michael Kors and Michael Kors Mens, including accessories, ready-
to-wear, footwear, wearable technology, watches, jewelry, and a full line of

fragrance products. Michael Kors stores are operated in the most prestigious
cities in the world, including New York, Beverly Hills, Chicago, London, Milan,
Paris, Munich, Istanbul, Dubai, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Rio de
Janeiro. In addition, Michael Kors operates digital flagships across North
America, Europe and Asia, offering customers a seamless omni-channel
experience.
1.5 Entrepreneurial Characteristics
Perseverance and determination definitely made him successful
because his brand came a long journey, and even went bankrupt, before being
a luxurious brand known worldwide today. He also mentioned in a 20/20
interview that the key to his success was expanding his line to appeal to women
at every size and every price point, meaning that he is considerate and
compassionate in doing his job as a designer to cater the needs and what fits his
customers.

A.2 LARRY PAGE
2.1 Quick Facts
Lawrence Edward Page or also known as Larry Page by the public, is
an American business magnate, Internet entrepreneur, and computer scientist
who was born on March 26, 1973 (age 48) at East Lansing, Michigan, United
States and he is best known as one of the co-founders of Google. Both his
father (Carl Victor Page Sr.) and his mother (Gloria Page) were computer
science professors at Michigan State University. He also had an older brother
(Carl Victor Page Jr.), who is also a computer entrepreneur, and a younger
sister (Beverly Page) who stays in the shadow that’s why not much is known
about her. He married Lucinda “Lucy” Southworth in 2007 at the Caribbean
Island (Necker Island) owned by Richard Branson and they were blessed by 2
children, born in 2009 and 2011 but they kept their information (e.g., name,
gender, etc.) secret. Moreover, as of December 2019, his position is one of the
Board members and a controlling shareholder of Alphabet Inc., the parent
company of Google. As of 2021, his net worth was estimated to $91.5 billion
and he was also listed (8th place) as one of the richest people in the world in
2021 by Forbes.
2.2 Education
Page first attended the Okemos Montessori School (now called
Montessori Radmoor) in Okemos, Michigan, from the age of 2 (1975) until 1979.
Then he continued his education in East Lansing High School, where he

graduated in 1991. He also attended Interlochen Center for the Arts as a
saxophonist for two summers while in high school. And he pursued a Bachelor
of Science in computer engineering from the University of Michigan. Later, he
enrolled for his Master of Science in computer science from Stanford University
where he could not complete his PhD because of his business ventures.
2.3 Work History
While at the University of Michigan, Page created an inkjet printer made
of Lego bricks (literally a line plotter) after he thought it possible to print large
posters cheaply using inkjet cartridges. He reverse-engineered the ink cartridge
and built all of the electronics and mechanics to drive it. He also developed a
business plan for a company that would use software to make a music
synthesizer during this time.
Accordingly, in 1996, he and Sergey Brin built a search engine called
‘BackRub’. They decided to incorporate this project as a company where it was
officially incorporated in 1998 under the name ‘Google’, which is one of the most
used search engines in the world. And Page ran Google as CEO until 2001, but
he wasn’t happy about having to relinquish his CEO spot at first, but he
gradually became comfortable because of him being less involved in the day-
to-day management of the company. However, in 2011, he decided to take
back the CEO position and reorganized the company’s senior management. He
continued leading Google until 2015, where the company was reorganized as
a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., and Page became the CEO of

Alphabet Inc. instead. However, he stepped down again from his CEO position
in December 2019 and remained as controlling shareholder of Alphabet Inc.
2.4 Brief Background of the Business
The story of Google begins in 1995 at Stanford University, where Larry
Page and Sergey Brin met. In 1996, they built a search engine called ‘BackRub’
and was operated on Stanford servers for several months. Then they decided
to incorporate their project as a company and Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founders
of Sun Microsystems, played a significant role in financing their company as he
wrote a check for $100,000 to the entity that had not even come into existence
as yet. Finally, on September 4, 1998, the project was officially incorporated as
a company under the name ‘Google’ and was located at Menlo Park, California,
United States. And Eric Schmidt was the one who was appointed as the CEO
in 2001, while Page and Brin became the presidents of products and
technology, respectively.
Google’s business concept focused on building a powerful search
engine based on algorithms that help people sort through vast amounts of
content to deliver accurate results for each search query. In 2015, Google was
reorganized as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., where its ‘core bets’
part comprises of Google, Android, YouTube, and Google Cloud, and the rest
of its business is called ‘other bets’. Its headquarters is located at 1600
Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, California, United States.

Furthermore, Google invested in many other novel technologies that can
enrich its portfolio of business and they are also investing in those smaller
companies. Hence, as of August 2021, Google owns approximately 232 other
companies besides its original internet subsidiary, where it acquired span
industries such as social platforms, advertising, cybersecurity, etc.
2.5 Innovations/Products/Services Offered
As we all know, Google is one of the most used search engines globally
because of its continuous advanced innovations. For instance, it became a
universal search because the search results are not only limited to text as
before but also videos, images, news, and many other contents that can be
searched can be seen. Another is that Google isn’t just available on phones
and tablets anymore, but watches and glasses now have Google too.
Furthermore, over the years, Google has acquired a variety of products and
services under its name that can be placed into three distinct categories,
namely: Desktop products (Chrome, Toolbar, Desktop, etc.); Mobile products
(YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps Navigation, etc.); and Web Products (Buzz,
iGoogle, Reader, etc.). However, Google’s most prominent products and
services revolve around its web services, notably known as the following:
Google Search, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Maps, and Google Wave.
Page is one of the most successful and great entrepreneurs of the world
and he possesses many excellent entrepreneurial characteristics. First, he is

an effective leader because he always leads from the front, trusts the
capabilities of his teams, strives to provide his teams an opportunity to improve
their self, and is fully engaged in the organizational activities of Google. Second,
he is an extrovert who loves to share his idea. For instance, he was open about
what he was expecting of ‘BackRub’, which made him able to establish a
research partnership with Brin, which turned into a business partnership. Third,
he is a committed person because he listens and appreciates ideas from other
people and has the capability to communicate effectively to his team. Fourth,
he is a futuristic person where he believes in new experiences and innovation
that enabled Google to grow from a single search engine to a world-leading
company with many innovative subsidiaries such as Android, Gmail, etc. Lastly,
he is innovative because, under his leadership, Google has incorporated a
system of innovation that focuses on identifying future opportunities and
working in effective teaks to exploit these opportunities.

technologies that are so incredibly useful that people use them twice a

B. NATIONAL
B.1 ALFREDO YAO
1.1 Quick Facts
After the second world war, there was an ethnic Chinese couple who
peddled household goods in the street of Manila, they were Chun Yao and
Soledad Yao. As this couple continue to live in the streets of Manila, they were
blessed with six (6) children. In the year 1943, their firstborn have been brought
to the world and they named him Alfredo, and no one knew that this man will
be a part of the richest men in the Philippines having a net worth of $200M as
of September 7, 2021, and was titled as the “Juice King of the Philippines”.
Currently, Alfredo Yao is 77 years old, turning 78 this coming November 23. He
is married to Linda Yao and was blessed with three (3) children. As of now, Mr.
Yao holds the position as the Vice Chairman of Export & Industry Bank while
holding a lot of other board memberships at the same time.
1.2 Education
As the young Alfredo Yao continues to grow, even if they were struggling
financially, he was to finish his elementary and secondary schooling with the
help of their relatives albeit there was no feasible information as to what specific
school did he attend for his primary education. As to his tertiary education, he
was enrolled in Mapua Institute of Technology for two years but he dropped out
due to the lack of funds. But later on, he came back to the same institution to
finish his tertiary education and got the degree in Engineering in 1962.

Furthermore, he then enrolled at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines
and earned a Ph.D. in Business Administration Honoris Causa.
1.3 Work History
Mr. Alfredo Yao has a very diverse work experiences, at the age of 12,
he became a sidewalk vendor. At 17, he set up a packaging business focusing
on printed cellophane wrappers for candies and other products after dropping
out of college. After almost twenty years, in 1979, he discovered doypack pouch
for packaging and decided to Incorporate Zest-O corporation in 1981. After the
success of his business, he became the Chairman and President of Mazy’s
Capital Inc.
Because of the opportunities that have opened to Mr. Yao, he was also
able to serve as the President of Asia Wide Refreshment Corp., PCCI, Harman
Foods (Phils.), Inc., Amchem Marketing, Inc., Uni-Ipel Industries, Inc., SMI
Development, Inc. and Zesto Philippines, Inc. He is also the President and
General Manager of Solmac Marketing, Inc. He served as the President of
Arthaland Corp. (formerly EIB Realty Developers Inc.) until November 8, 2004.
Furthermore, he also holds a lot of other positions before like for instance
in 2005, he was elected as president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce
and Industry. He also served as Finance Officer of Semexco Marketing
Corporation and the Philippine Business Bank, Treasurer of Export & Industry
Bank, Inc. from May 29, 2006, to June 28, 2007.
Currently, he has been the Chairman and Non-Executive Director of
Macay Holdings, Inc. (also known as Maybank ATR Kim Eng Financial

Corporation) since October 25, 2013. And has been the Chairman Emeritus of
Philippine Business Bank, Inc. (PBB) since July 26, 2010. Adding to that, he
serves as the Chairman of Zest-O Corporation, Asiawide Refreshments Corp.,
and Semexco Marketing Corporation. He also served as the Chairman of
Philippine Business Bank (formerly Philippine Business Bank, Inc.) until July
26, 2010, Export & Industry Bank, Inc. since July 6, 2006.
And lastly, the longest positions he still maintains up to this date is his
position as Vice Chairman of Export & Industry Bank Inc., him as the Vice
Chairman of Export & Industry Bank Inc. since May 29, 2006. And he serves as
a Director of EIB Realty Developers Inc., Export & Industry Bank, Inc., Zest
Airways Inc., One Mckinley Place, Inc., UMC Finance and Leasing Corporation,
and Maybank ATR Kim Eng Financial Corporation, Philippine Business Bank,
Inc., and Export and Industry Bank Inc. He served as a Director of Arthaland
Corp., a subsidiary of Export & Industry Bank Inc. since May 2002.
1.4 Brief background of the Business
Alfredo Yao is most famous for his innovative juice drinks for Filipinos.
This business of his was named Zest-O corporation, which was established in
the year 1981 and was located at 574 EDSA Caloocan City, Philippines, its
current primary address. His business has a very humble beginning which starts
as a simple packaging firm for candies and other products with a start-up capital
of ₱3,000 which he borrowed from a bank. In the year 1979, through an
industrial exhibit in Europe, Yao came across a Doypack packaging machine
which he then brought to the Philippines. He intends to sell this kind of packing

to those juice manufacturers in the Philippines but they all declined his offer.
But this became a blessing in disguise for Mr. Yao because what he did is to
produce his own juice product and thus, the birth of Zest-O which then earned
him the title as the Juice king of the Philippines. His business evolved from
printing-and-packaging solutions to a beverage-making corporation and further
diversified into real estate, banking, pharmaceuticals, air transportation, etc.
including those that are mentioned in the preceding paragraph.
Alfredo Yao’s first business is a service business that offers cellophane
packaging for candies and other products. This packaging should evolve into a
doypack packaging but juice companies hardly shut the door for the new
packaging. Because of that, as an entrepreneur, Mr. Yao had created an
unexpected opportunity from what seemed to be a problem. He then
experimented and innovated juice drinks with 12 different flavors for the
doypack packaging machine to be put at work. That is how a real entrepreneur
does his job creatively.
There are at least three (3) major characteristics possessed by Alfredo
Yao that brought him to the peak of his success. The first one is that he is not
complacent. Because of his early life experiences, he’s always searching for
ways to support his family since his father died when he was still 12. That is
why early on, it was engraved into him that he won’t be able to achieve anything
if he is complacent to what he had back then. That is why he always strives to

acquire experiences that he can use to continue learning and to pursue his
ambitions. The second one is his innovativeness. Throughout his carrier, his
innovativeness is resounding. From a simple cellophane packaging, and then
discovering a practical use of doypack packaging until he concocted his own
juice drink, his way of thinking is really ineffable. By connecting his experiences,
he became astoundingly innovative. And lastly, his resilience. When his father
died, he yearned but he rose to support his family. When he dropped out of
school, he thinks of other ways to make money, thus his packaging business.
When he came back from Europe with the doypack packaging machine, he
intends to sell it to a lot of juice drink manufacturers but he was declined. But
that doesn’t stop him, he rose and he created a masterpiece. That shows the
resilience of Mr. Yao. And all of those have paved his way to where he is, now.

B.2 MANNY VILLAR
2.1 Quick Facts
Manuel "Manny" Bamba Villar Jr. is the chairman of Vista Land &
Lifescapes, Vistamalls, Inc., and also Golden MV Holdings, Inc. His net worth
as of October 2021 is 7.5 billion dollars.
Manny was born in Moriones Tondo on December 13, 1949, to Manuel
Villar Sr. and Curita Bamba. Manny is the second of his parents' nine children.
Manny married Cynthia, a former classmate and daughter of the former Mayor
of Las Pinas City, when he was 25 years old, and they had three children soon
after named Manuel Paolo, Mark and Camille.
2.2 Education
Villar went to Isabelo delos Reyes Elementary School, a local public
school in Tondo, as a child. He also helped his mother in selling shrimp and fish
to help raise enough to send his siblings and himself to school. However,
helping his mother interfered with his schooling, and he was forced to leave
school in Grade 1. To continue his elementary education, he was enrolled at
Tondo Parochial School (later renamed Holy Child Catholic School), a private
school in Tondo managed by priests
He completed his high school studies at Intramuros' Mapúa Institute of
Technology. In 1970, he graduated from the University of the Philippines -
Diliman with a bachelor's degree in business administration and accountancy.
In 1973, and later on he completed his master's degree at the same institution.

2.3 Work History
Manny eventually worked for accounting businesses after graduating
from college, but he soon left to start his own seafood delivery business. His
company was working well at first, until a restaurant he was supplying failed to
pay him. He requested that the restaurant owner provide "meal tickets" (today
known as gift certificates or vouchers) for the whole sum owed to him. Manny
sold those meal tickets to office workers, and it took him a year to add up the
whole money owed to him. He returned to work as a financial analyst for a
development firm, but he no longer believes he can succeed in business, so he
resigned promptly.
He then applied for a Php10, 000.00 loan in 1975, which he used as a
beginning capital for his new business. He started a gravel and sand company
and acquired two additional delivery vehicles. As he continues to work in the
gravel and sand industry, he is introduced to construction firms who place
orders with him, and he finally comes up with the concept of starting a house
development company.
With the loan, he began building and selling homes at his first project,
Camella Homes Phase 1 and 2 in Las Piñas, which began with 160 units and
grew to become the country's largest home building firm, focusing on low-cost
mass housing. Manny's major target market was OFW, who ranged from
middle-class to impoverished families who were acquiring homes with the
support of financial organizations like as PAG-IBIG Funds.

2.4 Brief Background of the Businesses
2.4.1 Vista Land & Lifescapes Inc.
Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc. is an investment holding company
that specializes in the development of residential subdivisions as well as

further, All Day stores will be mostly positioned within Vista Land

C.1 EDITHA AGUINALDO DACUYCUY
1.1 Quick Facts
Editha Aguinaldo Dacuycuy, 70, is known as the "dragon fruit queen" of
the province of Ilocandia. Her 10-hectare Refmad dragon fruit farm in Barangay

Paayas, Burgos, Ilocos Norte, which is locally known as "saniata" and meaning
"light and wealth," eased her daughter's condition and brought new life into her
town's economy. Dacuycuy, a psychology graduate of the University of the
Philippines Diliman and former division manager of an insurance company, is
the mother of four daughters and the wife of a supportive husband.
1.2 Education
Editha Dacuycuy is a psychology graduate of the University of the
Philippines Diliman but ended up in agriculture industry. Not having any
background in agriculture, she sent another daughter to Thailand to further
study the production of dragon fruit. Upon the return of her daughter, she started
her full-scale production of dragon fruit.
1.3 Work History
She was a former division manager of an insurance company. Also, she
started a dragon fruit plantation with the help of his husband. Then, she
developed several dragon fruit-based recipes and products such as soap, wine,
jam, pastries, and others.
Editha initially learned about the dragon fruit through the daughter of a
coworker at the insurance firm where she was employed at the time. The
daughter's boss was a Macau resident who was a cancer patient who followed
the doctor's advice and ate dragon fruit. At first, she ventured on dragon fruit
production all because of her daughter’s constipation problem. She later chose
to extend her backyard production after learning about the dragon fruit's

economic and other health benefits. Dacuycuy has already built a nearly 10-
hectare dragon fruit farm in Paayas, Burgos, Ilocos Norte, which she named
REFMAD Farms (Rare Eagles Forest Marine and Agricultural Development).
The farm has become a showcase for dragon fruit cultivation in the north, giving
jobs and a source of income for Dacuycuy's relatives as well as the surrounding
community.
At the age of 65, Editha was diagnosed with breast cancer. Initially, it was
solely for medicinal purposes, but she and her husband later established a
small plantation in their family's backyard. Dacuycuy has now developed a
nearly 10-hectare dragon fruit farm in Paayas, Burgos, Ilocos Norte, which she
has named REFMAD Farms (Rare Eagles Forest Marine and Agricultural
Development). Dacuycuy also created a number of dragon fruit-based dishes
and items, including soap, wine, jam, pastries, and more.
Just when everybody is already asleep, this hardworking widow and
mom of four may be up thinking or experimenting on something. Dacuycuy
knows what she wants and she works hard to make it happen. She never quits
even when others did not believe in her idea at first. Dacuycuy didn’t even know
if what they were planting would really bear fruit but surely her hard work did
bear something which eased her daughter’s problem and brought life to her
town’s economy because of her successful dragon fruit plantation. Even though
she is facing a lot of misfortunes in life, Dacuycuy makes her problems into

opportunities, because of her daughter who is born with cerebral palsy, she
discovered a little-known fruit from the cactus family called “pitaya” or dragon
fruit. To conclude Dacuycuy is a risk taker and ability to turn problems into
opportunities.

simply trial and error.”
C.2 GLORIA ADUANA COCSON
2.1 Quick Facts
Vibrant and full of enthusiasm, Gloria “Nana Glory” Aduana Cocson is a
role model for every young woman possessing creative talent and an aptitude
for business. Nana Glory was born in a quiet but happy neighborhood of
Barangay 10-N Barani, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte on April 4, 1942. She just
turned 79 years old last April. She is the third of the four children of Policarpio
Aduana and Consuelo Cid. Nana Glory married to Melanio Cocson at a young
age 15. As a fruit of their love, they had four girls and three boys but one boy
died.
2.2 Education
As a lady of determination, Gloria Cocson attended her elementary in
Batac Central School and currently known as Mariano Marcos Memorial
Elementary School. She then enrolled at Batac Rural High School and now
called as Batac National High School during her high school years.

2.3 Work History
Nana Glory began kneading her empanada dough recipe at 20, a skill
she learned from a sister in-law. As she possessed a penchant for cooking, the
empanadas she prepared had that secret special flavor that appealed to
everyone’s taste.
Back in 1962, only seven empanada makers, mostly elderly women,
sold the delicacy at the old public market in City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. Then
the youngest maker, Nana Glory, competed with the more skilled ones and
hoped to earn an income to feed her family. She was solely raising her children
after her husband left them. She started her business in a market corner in City
of Batac, placing her cooking wares on a bamboo table topped by an umbrella.
She started going from town to town in Ilocos Norte and even as far in Sinait,
Ilocos Sur, renting space in fair grounds during fiestas and setting up her
“Glory’s Empanada” stand.
Few years later, she now runs four stalls, two of which belong to her
daughter, Glomy. The stalls occupy more than half of the City of Batac Riverside
Empanada building that the city government built for its famous product. Her
other daughter also set up an empanada business with her husband in La
Union.
In 2000, she was requested to showcase the art of empanada making
in the Philippine International Center (PICC) by Congressman Ferdinand
“Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr., the Governor of Province of Ilocos Norte at that
time. In 2008, she was given a Lifetime Achievement award by the

nongovernment Gameng Foundation for her contribution to the enrichment of
Ilocano heritage. Decades after, her empanadahan became a part of the locals’
daily activities, not to mention, their diet.
Glory’s empanada had been famous for decades. It was named after
Gloria “Nana Glory” Aduana Cocson, who made her meat pastry famous.
Empanada is simply a pride of Ilocos. It is indeed a jewel of the region. Glory’s
Empanada is a success story inspiring young men and women to follow that
dream through hard work, endurance and zest of life. It was established during
the mid 20’s of Nana Glory which is in the year 1960’s. The main location of
Glory’s Empanada is at the City of Batac Riverside Empanadahan. There are
other stalls of Glory’s Empanada at the nearby towns of City of Batac. The stall
currently attracts both local and foreign tourists. “Madik nga amu man. Basta
minanak laengen diay panagluto ti Empanada (I don’t remember. All I know is
I inherited the empanada recipe and cooking style),” Nana Glory explained how
she came up with her Empanada business. If one asks Nana Glory’s customers
why they keep coming back, they usually give the same answer. The
Empanada is worth it. It is naimas (delicious) and nalaka (affordable). Nana
Glory has been credited for pushing the delicacy to the level of a multimillion-
peso fast food treat. She runs her business on loan. She would get her supplies
through credit then pay them back once she earns her profit. “I really don’t have
a capital to speak of”, she said.

Glory’s Empanada is offered in a variety of fillings. The Special
Empanada, at Php 45 contains in its crispy and piping hot achuete, colored rice
flour (tapong) dough, the basic ingredients of grated green papaya, mung bean
sprouts, an egg, and a longganisa. But if you're scared of pork fat, there's the
Php 35 Ordinary Empanada for you, it has all the basic fillings except the
longganisa. There's also Special Eggless (PhP40), Special Without Monggo
“Seedless” (Php40), Double Special (PhP50) with two pieces of longganisas,
Special Double Egg (PhP45) with two eggs and a longganisa, and for an
extreme culinary experience, try the Double Double Empanada (PhP70) with
its two longganisas and two eggs. They also offer the “ballot” (Php 20),
longganisa (Php 20), and kwek kwek (Php 15). The Empanada is served either
on a plate or in a brown paper bag for take-out. The locals said the best way to
eat their empanada is to munch it with sukang Iloko or the Ilocano vinegar. One
order is big enough to take the place of a full rice meal.
Although Nana Glory had her competitor which is her daughter Glomy,
the mother-and-daughter tandem became partners instead of being business
rivals. The success of Nana Glory’s business led to the opening of her
daughter’s own empanadahan stall. Glomelyn Rigonan put up Glomy’s
Empanada but still adopted her mother’s recipe. What used to be solely Glory’s
is now Glory and Glomy’s Empanada. “There is no competition among family
members. I wanted them to have their business of their own. If I was able to

share my skills with other people, all the more that I would teach my children so
they can earn their own keep,” Nana Glory says. We should look other
entrepreneurs as our business competitors, instead treat them as our brothers
and sisters by business because our business hearts are related and
connected.
“Focus on keeping up with your customers, not your competitors.”
We believe the greatest challenge to companies today is not keeping up
with their competitors, but with their own customers. Customers’ expectations
are also more liquid and no longer based on industry boundaries. Customers –
whether consumers or business buyers – don’t compare your customer service
to that of your competitors, but to the best customer service they receive from
anywhere. In order to keep up with your customers, you have to start thinking
like them.
C.3 RICHARD “CARDING” TOLENTINO
3.1 Quick Facts
In the humble town of Piddig, Ilocos Norte, Richard “Carding” Tolentino
was born. Being an illegitimate child, he was raised and supported by his
grandfather. He took up Marine as his course in college but ended up not
boarding his ship. This sudden alteration of fate is all due to a mango exporter
that he encountered who came to order cartons to be utilized for his mango
shipments, which later on motivated him to go back to Ilocos Norte. After years
of hard work and sacrifices, he became the Mango King of Ilocos Norte. In 2008,

he was awarded as “Outstanding High-Value Cash Crop Farmer.” While in
2015, he was recognized by the Department of Agriculture as “Agri-
Entrepreneur of the Year” in National Gawad Saka Awards. He is also the
president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Ilocos Norte
Chapter.
3.2 Education
Carding’s grandfather supported his studies until he was in high school.
But when Carding entered college, he decided to enroll in night classes at
Philippine Maritime Institute located in Manila while working in a carton factory
during the daytime. He successfully finished his maritime course but he ended
up not boarding his ship.
3.3 Work History
Carding worked in a carton factory when he was in college. He set up his
own mango business named “Mango King Food Products.” He expanded his
farming business and put up his own fish pond, piggery, dragon fruit and
vegetables farm.
Carding met a Chinese businessman when he was in Metro Manila which
inspired him to start a business. When Carding was asked by this man if he
know someone who could deliver mangoes, he remembered his uncle who
owns a truck and had a mango plantation in Laoag City. Carding, together with
his uncle, made a proposal with the businessman. However, their first try in the
business failed when they did not make it on the agreed delivery time because

of an engine trouble. But this failure did not stop him and he decided to formally
start his business which he named “Mango King Food Products” which
produces dried and wine mango products. At the present time, Carding’s
business has already reached Visayas and Mindanao regions and even
collaborates with huge companies in Metro Manila.
Carding’s first try in the business world revolve around delivering
mangoes, which ended up as a failure. On the other hand, his business named
“Mango King Food Products” produces dried mango and wine products with the
use of carabao or native mangoes. They pack their products and later on deliver
them to different sellers all over the Philippines.
Success is surely not something that happens overnight. Carding proved
this on how he has to overcome several trials and struggles before being
recognized as the Mango King of the North. Throughout his story, there were
three characteristics that he carried which made him successful. Firstly, Carding
is persistent. Even if it was only his grandfather who raised and supported him,
he persevered and did not allow his unfortunate situations stop him.
Furthermore, despite failing his first try in the entrepreneurial world, he found
reasons to continue firmly and obstinately. Secondly, Carding is an undertaker
or risk-taker. Despite having inadequate knowledge and skills regarding the
world he was about to enter; he still took the risk and bravely ventured the
mango business. Lastly, Carding is hardworking. He managed to finish his

Maritime course while working in a carton factory when he was in college.
Moreover, in spite being successful in the mango industry, he still worked
diligently so he could put up different business such as piggery and vegetable
farming.
“It’s just in the beginning that the hardship is hard to overcome.”

Chapter III. REFLECTION
A. JAN BRYAN T. BAIDED
Being an entrepreneur is not a façade of one’s personal interest to seek wealth
and fame, albeit they are incorporated into it, but is a bare representation of one’s
identity as a person. As I go through the astonishing life journey of these amazing
entrepreneurs, I can’t help myself but to admire the fruits of their labor and wonder,
how did they able to pull off those seemingly strenuous achievements. With the roller
coaster ride they have experienced in life; how could they be able to rise up until they
were able to stand at the summit? And then, a realization came unto me, about these
little important things that have been amplified through the experiences of these
entrepreneurs that mostly everyone had missed, which completed their formula
towards success.
The first thing that I have realized is the fact that one’s success towards
entrepreneurial endeavors is not predetermined by one’s economic status but his clear
vision or depiction of his goals. As a part of an average Filipino family, I have been
exposed to the thought that those who are wealthy will become wealthier and those
who are poor will become poorer. Conversely, those inspiring stories from the seven
(7) entrepreneurs talked otherwise. Being a part of a high-income family will not make
one immune to risks, failures, and uncertainty. Not all doors will open for them just
because they have the means to support their ventures. Like for instance, Michael
Kors, his stepfather is a businessman and he had built his own business, but he still
experienced bankruptcy, but he didn’t give up, rather, he acheives. Similarly, being
poor is not a hindrance for one to make his dreams into reality. A great example is

Alfredo Yao, who despite being a sidewalk vendor at an early age, he became part of
the wealthiest Filipinos as of now. What they both possess is a clear vision of their
goal and a firm resolve. That is why even if odds aren’t in their favor at first, they paved
their own way that leads to where they are now.
The second thing that I have realized that sets these entrepreneurs apart from
others is that they are not afraid of going out of their comfort zone and at the same
time to try new things even in the presence of adversity. A lot of people are hesitant in
trying new things. They are limited by their doubts and what-ifs. They are too afraid of
the risk they might incur if they do something that is not within their circle. That is why
a lot of opportunities have slipped away from them. But these entrepreneurs are
different, they are less risk-averse and thus they are not limited by their trail of
unwanted thoughts, but they are actually determined to make something happen, to
make a dent in the universe as Steve Jobs stated before. Let’s talk about Mr. Ricardo
Tolentino, the Mango King of the North. He had devoted his time, money, and effort to
study a maritime course which then serves as his comfort zone. But that doesn’t stop
him from trying and exploring new possibilities, thus engaging in himself in a mango
business. And his decision didn’t betray him, rather, he is now enjoying the sweetness
of the fruit of not limiting himself to his comfort zone. Another one is Mrs. Edita
Dacuycuy. She’s a psychology graduate and a division manager, but the condition of
her daughter gave her the courage to break out of her norm and did something totally
different. She then put up a dragon fruit farm which help her daughter, the community
and at the same time, earned her a title as “the dragon fruit queen” which is a lot of
extras from her initial intention.

Our community has now been saturated by a lot of product offerings that it may
seem arduous to differentiate your business to the crowd, but that is not a problem to
these entrepreneurs because uniqueness seems to be innate in their nature. What the
consumers want is a breath of fresh air. That is why in order to keep up with their
demands, entrepreneurs must always seek for something unique and different. Let us
all learn from entrepreneurs like Ma’am Glory, Sir Villar, and Sir Page. Ma’am Glory
inherited their empanada business. When she’s at the right age, she competed head-
to-head with the veterans in empanada making but she invented different approaches
that separate her business from others like having a regular, special, double double
special, etc. in the menu. Next is Sir Villar wherein he incorporated diversified
offerings, not just sticking in his primary business but indulging in many others, that
sets him apart from the crowd. And lastly, Sir Page has continued offering various
changes and improvements to his search engine, incorporating all the new features,
until it became the leading search engine up to this date.
And with all that being said, I have concluded that, what they all have in
common, is the recognition of their identity, which is very crucial in every endeavor.
They know what they want to become, what identity they want their business to be
known for. And that is not easy at all. A lot of people, including me, are having a hard
time telling our real identity. If you ask someone about this, they’ll just give a vague
answer. But these entrepreneurs have discovered their identity and they all
incorporated it into their businesses. And with that, all the great things that are waiting
for them have come into their possessions. Therefore, I appeal to all of you, let us
discover who we really are. Let us recognize our identity.

B. MARGRETH ADELAID M. CACATIAN
Upon reading all the success stories of these seven entrepreneurs, they all
have a common ground, and that is they all faced hardships in life before being
completely successful. Additionally, some of them were not able to finish their college
degrees and began their success stories by starting their own businesses. Some faced
bankruptcy, some graduated yet their businesses are not aligned to their degrees, and
some ventured out because they wanted to try something new. Peculiar yet inspiring;
that is what I thought to myself when I read all their humble beginnings. It is somewhat
cliché for people to hear these stories with the same plots, however, they all
differentiate on what challenges they faced and how they conquered them all through
venturing out their businesses.
As a student, who is still yet to conquer the real world, these success stories
motivate me to continue what I started, and along the way, to never be afraid to
discover and try something new and to always look for things that inspire me. I am a
firm believer that every single thing that we encounter, we never know if those simple
things would actually bring us the break that we have been manifesting for a long time.
So as to relate the stories of these entrepreneurs, whether we start from something
unknown or mainstream in the market, the entrepreneur’s purpose, dedication, and
inspiration to make their businesses successful is what makes them different from their
competitors.

C. PAMELA JANE D. DUMBRIQUE
“Life is like a roller coaster. It has its ups and downs. But it's your choice to
scream or enjoy the ride.” As I unravel the story of every entrepreneur, I perceived that
their journey was not parallel, but more of a wavy one. It was like the waves of the sea
that has no certain speed nor strength. One day, it was powerful and speedy, but the
other day, it was calm. One day, it was filled with joy and triumph, but the other day, it
was filled with sorrow and defeat. There was no assurance of what will happen but
one thing for sure is, endurance became their hope to survive life.
Venturing the entrepreneurial world is a risky decision that requires unwavering
faith for you to not easily give up, which the entrepreneurs possessed. This is the core
reason of their successes and achievements. In times where they wanted to accept
defeat because they could no longer see the bright light, they endured the pain,
suffering and agony which made them even stronger, braver and firmer. Along the
way, there were unexpected turning points that they encountered, but they remained
strong and anchored to the reason why they started. Finally, they utilized the skills
gifted to them to the best of their abilities. They maximized their talents and even went
out of their comfort zone when needed.
It surely was not an easy fight for the entrepreneurs, but they handpicked
continuing as their option which I am sure that they do not regret at all. Because after
countless tears and sweats, they finally have reaped what they have sown. Endurance
may seem tiring and draining, but the fruits it produces are always worth it. Because
the entrepreneurs endured and withstand the adversities that came on their way, they

knowing where you are headed. Every true entrepreneur knows that there will be never
have established their own particular business that are now rocking the
entrepreneurial world.
D. ROSELLE M. LAYAOEN
Being an entrepreneur should not only focus around financial matters but also
focus on how each entrepreneur could become an instrument in making a difference, in
making a change not only for themselves but for others as well. The right mindset
should be developed - a mindset that looks beyond one’s own benefits and seeks to
help others as well.
When we were younger, life was centered on material things. However, as we
grow older, we realize that there is more to life than having a house, car and other
luxuries. Having that entrepreneurial mind at an early age is great because it can be
nurtured as time passes by. Entrepreneurial mind is not instilled in us when we were
young; rather, it is learned.
To have a meaningful life, we need to be part of the lives of others by sharing
what we have. For entrepreneurs, part of their success is being able to extend their
hands to others who dream of making a difference. It is like being the vessel of hope
and encouragement to aspiring entrepreneurs
All of the successful entrepreneurs whose stories I have read, I have come to
realize that there are many things to consider before starting any business. In fact, there
are many strategies that an entrepreneur could follow to achieve success, such as
knowing and focusing on your customers, having patience and determination, and

enough time or money to make things right when starting a new business. So it is vital
to focus on the most important thing, which is the customer. To understand the
significance of knowing customers, imagine an entrepreneur with a flawless and
innovative product but does not have enough customers to sustain the business and
the opposite is true. For entrepreneurs to be customer-focused, they need to understand
customer’s needs rather than focusing on great products or wonderful services. Having
the patience and determination could lead you to success. At first, people do not know
your business but if you continue to improve your product and have that patience and
determination, for sure you will thrive and achieve everything you hoped for when you
were just starting out as an entrepreneur. Also, it is important to know where you are
headed. You should always keep a positive attitude in mind. You should be familiar with
all walks of life and arrive at your own destination.
What impressed me about those successful entrepreneurs was that, despite
their struggles and adversity in life, they were able to build very worthwhile businesses.
This does not happen every day to everyone. But probably because they have strong
faith, they were able to reach their dreams. When entrepreneurs acknowledge the
worth of waiting patiently and having determination, they will get back more than what
they could have imagined.
Many people have tried to start their own businesses. Many others have also
failed. We may have a great concept in mind, we may have the resources to start a
business, but if we lack the skills, then we are just wasting time and money. It is also
important to have the entrepreneurial skills. Being a risk-taker is the most important

entrepreneurial skill. You should learn to accept failures and still stand up firm and
continue seeking for best opportunities.
Success cannot be created overnight. As they always say, it takes patience and
perseverance before we can see the fruits of our labor. “The journey of a thousand
miles begins with a single footstep,” said Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu. All growth
springs from the beginning. Successful entrepreneurs are equally visionary founders.
They followed a similar path - they started small, took risks, and eventually expanded
their businesses.
E. ZARAH PALMA
An entrepreneur is a person who organizes and operates a business. As we all
know, there are many successful entrepreneurs around the world, both internationally
and locally, such as Larry Page (one of the creators of Google), Glory Cocson (the
owner of the famous Glory's Empanada), Alfredo Yao (known as one of the famous
juice manufacturers in the Philippines), etc. However, they did not become successful
instantly. Instead, they work hard and never give up despite how difficult it is/if they
are failing.
Furthermore, after reading some of the stories of successful entrepreneurs, I
learned a lot of lessons that I can apply to myself. First, being hardworking because
great things will not come to me if I don't do anything. Instead, I need to work hard to
be able to achieve the things I want. For instance, I need to work hard to learn all my
lessons to get a high score in my exams because if I do not work hard to study, I will
not get a high score. Second, be a risk-taker where I need to take a risk to be able to

know the outcome of the choices I made because there are no right or wrong choices.
If I fail, I fail not because I am not good enough, especially if I did my best, but because
it is not my time yet. In other words, more excellent things will yet come for me in the
future. For instance, I am taking a risk in taking up a BS in Accountancy despite being
unsure of what I want to do with my life. Lastly, never give up even though how
hard/difficult it is because there will be a time where good things will happen in my life.
For instance, I never give up despite how demanding all my subjects are as an
Accountancy student because I know that this will be worth it after I graduate.
F. CIARRA KAYE M. QUIBUYEN
Being successful in life is a dream for a reason. For it might seem so impossible
to achieve but for some, they were able to make it their reality. Growing up, I have
heard many stories of well-known persons whose lives came from rags to riches.
Some argue that success comes from luck. And some will say that it comes from
determination and true grit. Upon going through the inspiring stories of these
entrepreneurs, many realizations have hit me. That success does not come overnight,
but it is anchored with a plentitude of experiences and a built character to prosper in
life.
Firstly, I have learned that with life’s uncertainty, it takes a lot of courage to take
a leap of faith and venture a world that you have a void knowledge with. Just like the
stories being mentioned, it is almost like they have already chosen the path that they
will take for the rest of their lives but they dared to try a venture that is totally out of
their league and still succeeded. Thus, this has inculcated in my mind that we should

never be frightened to try out something new because having a brave heart will never
make you lose. You will still able to get something in return and learn from it.
Moreover, these various stories have made me learn about being persistent
and resilient. Life will always find a way to throw nuts on us. Just like in the stories,
someone experienced bankruptcy, someone got rejected multiple times, someone
was diagnosed with cancer but still, they chose to remain strong on their feet. And so,
they have just proven that no matter how hard the muds will try to drag us down, we
shall never stop standing. Instead, we shall use these challenges to let our burning
desire in succeeding to ignite more. Let’s just be reminded that we have come a long
way just to be swayed by the waves of trials and hindrances. And that in life, what
matters the most are the lessons that we have learned.
And lastly, I have learned that focusing on the skills that we are good at, will
also be a big chunk of the reasons of our success. We should harness and hone our
gifted talents and skills because these will help us to stand out more against
competitors and the odds. By doing the things we are good at, we are bringing out our
real passion that will also encourage us to try to learn more and expand our horizons
in the field that we are in. Hence, we should cultivate and nurture our innate abilities
not just to improve ourselves holistically but also to produce more fruitful outcomes.
To conclude, every one of us have different stories. But behind these stories is
a load of meaningful experiences that helped in shaping us to where we have already
become. After all, it is not just all about the things that we already have achieved but
it will always be the lessons that we have acquired and engraved into our souls and
minds that will serve as the cornerstone of our own lives.

G. KATE DIANNE C. SAGUN
Many individuals have been affected physically, mentally, and financially as the
COVID-19 pandemic has spread over the world. As the pandemic expanded and
online lessons were adopted, I became extremely nervous, and my mental health
began to deteriorate. I started to lose motivation and no longer appreciate learning as
much as I used to.
I began to have optimism and got more driven to put a lot of work into everything
I do after reading the success stories of Michael Kors, Larry Page, Manny Villar,
Alfredo Yao, Editha Dacuycuy, Ricardo Tolentino, and Glory Cocson. I learnt a lot from
them, and perhaps I will be able to apply what I have learned in the future.
I learned from Michael Kors' story that I should follow my passion and
accomplish something that I truly enjoy. Following your own passion is really
challenging, especially when no one is rooting for you. Nowadays, parents typically
urge their children to select a career that will allow them to make more money rather
than allowing them to pursue anything they desire. Being able to live my passion and
accomplish things I enjoy is a great way to live a happy and fulfilling life. As an
accounting student, I am certain that I am on the correct route and will be successful
since I have pursued my ambitions.
Manny Villar was the most influential to me. From his story, I learned that
education has a purpose. He said that education is his strong foundation that is why
he is so successful right now. Education is a foundation for anything we want to do in
life, hence it is critical for everyone to obtaineducation and achieve their life objectives.
If you want to acquire a decent job or start your own business, you need have a lot of

experience in the field. That's only attainable if you have obtained education, as it is
the only way to have access to a great quantity of understanding. You must be
knowledgeable in order to make money and achieve success in life. In that sense, I
became more motivated to finish my studies and pursue even if it is hard.
I have also learned to think outside of the box and be as creative as possible.
Larry Page and Alfredo Yao's success is due to their resourcefulness and ability to
make everything conceivable. People are always looking for something new or
something that will address their everyday concerns, and entrepreneurs may profit
from it. To be successful, entrepreneurs must take the chance to innovate in order to
make people's lives simpler, and these solutions must continue to evolve in order to
become better, simpler, and more helpful. Then I realized that innovativeness is
applicable not just in business but also in everyday life. People who adapt effectively
to their demands and develop their own solutions are innovators. We can use creativity
to help us succeed in all of our pursuits.
One skill I also noticed while reading the stories is that I must remain strong in
the face of adversity. Like Editha Dacuycuy and Ricardo Tolentino, I must not give up
when faced with problems; instead, I must remain calm and unconcerned. An issue is
not solved merely by accepting it; it must also be transformed into something useful.
As an entrepreneur, it is what I aspire to achieve in the future. Being versatile and
creating a diamond from a splinter.
Finally, the story of Glory Cocson showed me the importance of being able to
keep your business alive. She taught her daughter the formula for her product,

empanadas, and her daughter later became her competition. That is not, however,
how she sees it. She also stated that if she could share her abilities with others, she
would educate her children so that they could support themselves.
To summarize, the entrepreneurial skills I learned are exactly what I need to
get by in everyday life. These experiences taught me how to be more resilient in real
life and how to stay motivated to keep going. In today's world, more and more
individuals should recognize that learning good entrepreneurial skills will greatly
benefit them in everyday situations, particularly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Building a skill set of critical entrepreneurial abilities like adaptability and resolution of
conflicts will certainly make your day more productive and help you progress your
career.
H. DENZEL REYEL S. SANTOS
I have read the story of successful entrepreneurs recently. What was amazing
about them was that, despite their hardships, they were able to develop a successful
business. This does not happen to everyone every day. They were able to achieve
their goals, though, most likely due to their strong faith. Many people have attempted
to start their own business. Many others have failed as well. We may have a wonderful
idea and the finances to start a business, but if we lack the necessary abilities, we will
be squandering our time and money.
Success does not happen overnight. Seeing the fruits of our labor requires
patience and perseverance. Starting a business entails a sequence of mistakes,
detours, stumbles, and hard-won good fortune. What amazed me in their story is on

how each of them responds to those circumstances that determined the fate of their
business. As a result, all of their business got successful.
What I learned about reading the stories of each entrepreneur, the world is filled
with endless options and innumerable opportunities, but your life and career are finite,
which means you only have so much time to find what you're looking for and leave
your mark. This is our chance to shine. It's a scarce resource, so don't squander it.
Find something you enjoy doing and go for it. That is how all the entrepreneurs begin.
I. DESTHYN HYGEIA T. SAYMO
People's lives are filled with unexpected experiences and challenges. These
trials can sometimes leave scars that are physically, mentally, and emotionally
damaging to the person. These scars are life's wounds that contains memories. It is
believed that scars are supposed to heal as time passes by. Indeed, scars do heal,
but the memories of those scars do not. Eventually, the saddest part of life is that our
world changes, but all that remains are the memoirs of the past. We can move on but
we cannot forget. However, it is on our control on how we perceive those memories
and how they will be used to affect our present and future.
For the entrepreneurs mentioned on the first part of this paper, who are Michael
Kors, Larry Page, Alfredo Yao, Manny Villar, Editha Dacuycuy, Ricardo Tolentino, and
Gloria Cocson, I believe that the memories of their scars are their history that shaped
them today. They used those memories as their primary motivators to become what
and who they are in the present. I noticed that these entrepreneurs have one thing in
common: they have all suffered from life's wounds. They have experienced their own
scars. Before they achieved the wealth and success that they have now, they all had

to overcome difficult life challenges that they encountered on their path to success.
Ricardo Tolentino almost gave up and lost hope in pursuing his business life. Alfredo
Yao’s machine was rejected many times. Editha Dacuycuy and Gloria Cocson
experienced family problems. Manny Villar almost lost his first business due to a loan
from one of his suppliers. Michael Kors even went into bankruptcy. Also, Larry Page
needed the assistance of others to finance and complete his project. Despite their
stumbles, they were persistent, determined, complacent, creative, and courageous in
getting back up and in achieving their current spotlight. These entrepreneurs
demonstrate that scars are only scars and that scars are not a sign that it is time to
give up.
Their various success stories made me realize that life is very distinct from
others'. We all breathe the same air and walk on the same ground, but our life
experiences make us unique and set us apart. Their stories taught me that success
is more than just being successful. It is earned through adversity and setbacks. Their
experiences also made me realized that life is not easy. It will always be like a ride
on a roller coaster. There will be numerous loops, as well as ups and downs. I also
realized that reaching success is influenced by a variety of factors that motivates
someone to just keep going and never give up. I think that success is more than just
having parents, family, or friends to lean on or having a big dream to follow. But,
success is the result of all the rejections, disappointments, pain, and cries that came
along the journey. In fact, the scars I am talking about are failures which are blessings
in disguise. These are present in the world to bring out the best in us. If those
entrepreneurs did not recognize their failures, triumph would not be in their life right

now. Scars should be recognized and not forgotten. If they were not present, no one
would consider success to be a life victory, and that life is a game that you must win
in the end.
Furthermore, their stories convinced me that time is the greatest challenge that
we have. Our time passes quickly, and there is nothing we can do to make up for the
lost time. As soon as we can, we should make every second of every minute count.
Our time can be spent with our families, talking with our friends, doing our hobbies, or
the best option, enhancing our entrepreneurial mind. According to Manny Villar, the
gap between people is having an entrepreneurial mind. If everyone could have a good
entrepreneurial mindset, we can all be successful. Alfredo Yao also advises us to
imagine that we must work hard and work smart as if someone is running after us. If
we want to succeed, we must be alert and awake. I also believe that the correct term
to use in our lives is not time-management because we can never manage the time,
but rather we must manage ourselves in order to keep up with the time. The time will
not adjust for us. We must be the one who needs to adjust.
In addition, the hidden trait that I believe to be the most important trait that we
must have in life is optimism. Failures and sad times will never be avoided, but
someday, when everything will be fine and victory will be in our hands, we will look
back on these failures, and we will be so proud that we did not give up. Without a
doubt, life should be lived with optimism/positivity. This will motivate us to persevere
in the face of adversity. We must know that positivity is associated with trust and
confidence. The confidence in ourselves and our trust to our ability to accomplish our
goals will be our driving force. Negativity should only cause us to become disoriented

and unfocused. Truly, we must always look on the bright side of things rather than the
dark side. In connection to this, faith must always prevail over fear. Faith in God and
faith in ourselves provide the best guidance as we travel through life. If we let our fear
outstand our faith, we will only become weaker. Through our journey, many people will
also question us and drag us down. Yes, many eyes will judge us but let us not be
swayed by them. Simply smile and walk away and focus on the goals. Definitely, let
us build our faith stronger to make ourselves the strongest.
To end, everyone can take lessons from the stories of the said entrepreneurs.
Their story is rich in wisdom and good ideas that we can apply in our daily lives.
Moreover, their quotes are not just whatever comes to their mind when they are asked.
Those quotes represent a summary of their lives, and we can make those as our
inspiration and live by them. Undeniably, those said entrepreneurs only show that the
scars they have are not bitter scars but sweet scars as a result of their struggles in
attaining an ultimately blissful and sweet success.
