2. Give one example of the interactional norms and preferences
that are typical within the Warm Springs community. How these
norms affect Indian children’s adaptation to non-Indian
classroom norms, such as the participant structures you
described above?
3. Some teachers in the Warm Springs school develop new
classroom routines that are culturally sensitive to the
communicative norms of their students and accommodate to
their typical patterns of interaction. What does Phillips say is
the downside of doing this?
4. What do you think should be the goal for teachers of Warm
Springs children – to teach them to understand the difference
between their community’s norms and those of the mainstream
