If you haven't already been putting some money aside for Christmas, START TODAY! Every little bit helps so start rummaging around for those gold coins and sacrificing coffees and lunches for the next few weeks. One family is saving $20 on fuel by organising errands and carpooling between now and Christmas and also they have given up take aways until Christmas which is $60 per week. So between now and Christmas they can put aside $320! Have a look at where you can cut back over the next few weeks so that the couple of weeks before Christmas aren't such a financial strain. Any ideas? The aim is to NOT use your credit card! Your New Year will start of more pleasantly if you are not worried about how much money you owe! So, thinking about Christmas and the kinds of expenses – let’s here some... ( Out to audience) Keep in mind that you will need extra money at this time of the year and don't forget to include the following... Presents Food for guest drop ins Food for Christmas Lunch or Dinner Alcohol Taxi fares (coming back from those parties!) Maybe even party outfits... Start writing a list of all the EXTRA expenses you can forsee between now and next week - Create your Christmas Budget. You can have a look for some extra tips on the website
is about talking with your family and friends about financial expectations around Christmas. Based on my own experiences, it's pretty important to start talking to family and friends about expectations for Christmas presents and Christmas lunch. It doesn't matter what size the family is, it's important to set your boundaries regarding your budget. You would be surprised how many people within in the family a grateful that you bought up the topic! Money seems to be such a difficult thing to talk about... Just breifly, a budget is a limit. This is the amount of money that you have available for something. It's great when you can come "under budget"! Setting Gift Budgets Have a talk with your family and friends about gift limits. You can sent spending limits per person, have a Secret Santa or just buy pressies for the kids and not the adults. By the way, setting a spending limit does not mean you have to spend that amount - it's the limit. If the limit is $30 and you can make a gift instead, you're ahead! Setting Food/Alcohol Budgets Discuss a budget, perhaps an amount per head for adults and an amount for kids, then set about creating your menu. Some families may have a budget that allows them to have seafood and ham, others may have a more limited budget.
Step 2 is about talking with your family and friends about financial expectations around Christmas. Based on my own experiences, it's pretty important to start talking to family and friends about expectations for Christmas presents and Christmas lunch. It doesn't matter what size the family is, it's important to set your boundaries regarding your budget. So the final step for Planning and Preparation is to review. Take a look at the following points and apply them to how you have gone with Christmas this year... * Did you come in or under your budget for present buying and Christmas food? If you went over, what do you think you could do better next year? Perhaps use cash instead of credit cards? Perhaps have a plan earlier? * Did you enjoy the festivities or did all rush by in a flash? Maybe next year you could book in some time to enjoy the season. My first and foremost tip for everything in life is to have a plan! Start the year off with Christmas 2009 in mind to make it easier and more affordable than ever! Here are the top 3 recommendations for planning for Christmas 2009... 1. Create a Christmas Budget. Based on your spending this year, create your budget for the next year. Make sure you include food, gifts, decorations, special outfits, dinners etc... 2. Start a Christmas Savings Account. Most banks offer a Christmas Savings Account that offers special interest rates. You could also open an online only account. Personally, I prefer these. It takes longer to organise transfer of funds therefore forcing me to stop and think about my spending. 3. Purchase Items in the Post Christmas Sales. I've been doing thise for about 6 years now and this last year did not have to purchase any gifts because my "present box" was full! So I now have my Christmas Savings money available to use for the sales on Boxing Day and in the half year clearance for Christmas 2009 and 2010! The reductions are so great that you can end up going a little crazy. Make sure you still use the other tips and take a list with you. Don't buy it just because it's 40% off, but it because it's on the list. Don't forget to also top up on Christmas paper, cards and decorations!
So... What are those 4 points
* Are some of your frivolous and unnecessary spends holding you back from achieving your goals?
