Energy production,
transmission and use
Energy production and use in Italy and Tuscany by easiest valdano for
Erasmus plus Project our planet our future
Electricity Is not the main form of energy for
industry and households
• In Italy and in Tuscany in particular, we use different forms of energy. We
use natural gas that we import from places like Algeria through an
important pipeline that goes through our territory. In Terranuova
Bracciolini in particular, we have a big pump station for methane gas. We
heat our houses by wood, natural gas, GPL and pellet. Electric power is too
expensive for heating. So we used for illumination All for powering
machines.
• Quite a few houses are installing solar panels on their roofs. They exchange
the power with the power grid.

Natural gas and Lpg for heating
• Natural gas is green but it is not available
everywhere because it costs a lot of
money to bring the gas from the main
pipelines. All towns in the Arno Valley have
Natural gas delivered to the homes. Some
villages don’t, so they have to use LPG or
wood or pellet for for heating. For all other
users there is electricity which is quite
expensive on the italian market compared
to other countries especially in the North
of Europe
Transport of wood and pellet
• Wood is produced locally so it
doesn’t impact too much on the
environment when transported.
From local woods and forests logs
and pellet are produced and sold
by local firms.
• Trees are cut down according to
multi year cutting plans that help
preserve and renovate the
resource.
Transport of gas
• Methane gas is transported via pipes
which are placed underground in most
cases. So its transport does not impact
very much on the environment and
burning natural gas is less harming for
the quality of the air.
• LPG is transported by lorry and stocked
in special tanks near the houses. LPG is
more expensive than methane gas And is
not as clean.
Petrol, diesel and heating oil
• Of course the main form of energy for vehicles consists in liquid fuel
derived from mineral oil. Petrol, diesel or heating kerosene are
transported on lorries on short distances and on tanker ships or
pipelines on longer distances. They both pose great danger to the
environment in case of accident and fuel spilling.
• Some homes are heated by kerosene especially in big towns and
cities. This is the most polluting form of energy for heating and is
highly unhealthy.
Transport and heating
LPG and methane gas for auto traction
• A number of vehicles today uses LPG or methane gas as fuel together
with petrol. Cars and vans are equipped with a special kit and can run
on either on petrol or gas.
• The number of gas stations that provide GPL is quite large. Lots of
petrol stations on the motorway can refuel cars with LPG. The
number of methane gas stations is lower and yet methane gas is less
expensive and cleaner than LPG. On the other hand LPG is more
efficient as a fuel for autotraction. It costs half the price of petrol but
of course it is less efficient than petrol so cars run fewer kilometres on
a litre of liquid methane as compared to a litre of petrol.
