3. Short history
• Săpânța is a small village, first mention in a
document in 1373.
• The village was put on the map by Stan Păraș,
a local wood master that founded the Merry
Cemetery, a unique graveyard with colourful
gravestones and naïve paintings describing the
people burried there.
4. Geographic location
• Săpânța is a village situated in the region of
Maramures, in the exreme northen area of
Romania.
• It is placed on the right side of the Tisa river,
which is the borderline between Romania and
Ukraine.
• It is located about 18km away from Sighetul
Marmației, one of the northen cities in the
country.
6. Demography
• The village of Săpânța houses about 3.500
people, most of whom are Romanian, but also
Hungarian, Ukrainian and gipsies.
• 85% of the population is Orthodox.
• People follow every tradition and custom
strictly, all year long.
7. Turistic hotspots
• The village is most famous for its cemetery,
founded by local master Stan Pătraș in 1930.
• The colourful gravestones are engraved with
lyrics about the people resting beneath them.
• They tell stories about people’s lives, families
and jobs within short funny poems.
10. Turistic hoptspots
• Natural reservation “Mlaștina Poiana
Brazilor”, spread on 30 km square.
• It is a swampy area that houses a large viety of
endangered species of plants and animals.
