1. Christmas Customs
in Greece
-We decorate our houses with angels,
bells,
Candles, lights, school, town.
-We decorate a Christmas tree.
-We send cards to friends.
-We write letters to Sanda Claus.
-We visit relatives.
2. This year, in Serres there is
“The State of Wishes”
You can find lots of Christmas sweets, hot
drinks and sandwiches, and an amusement
park with a Big wheel, Dodgem Cars, the
Ghost Train and an ice- skating rink.
You can also enjoy short theatrical plays or
songs by children in a Christmas
decoration.
5. Some people fast for 40 days before Christmas. That
is, they don’t eat meat at all or other dairy products.-
Pomegranate symbolizes fertility and good luck. Some
people break one out of their door and enter the
house on their right foot on New Year’s Day
6. -On Epiphany day, young men dive in chilly
Waters for a cross, blessed by a priest and
thrown into the water.
7. -Children sing carols from house to
house
οn Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and
Epiphany (6th January)
8. On Christmas Eve we eat Christopsomo

9. Melomakarona
Ingredients
2 cups sunflower oil or corn
oil
½ cup orange juice
½ cup brandy
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon clove-gillyflower
2ts.cinnamon
2 vanillas
10. 1 teaspoon o
soda
½ cup sugar
2 cups
semolina
4-4 12 cup of
flour
15gr. baking
powder
Syrop
3 cups sugar
1 ½ cup honey
2 cups water
cinnamon stick
1 orange cut in 2
11. Kourabiedes
Ingredients
• 400gr butter
• 80gr sugar
• 2 egg yolks
• 1 teaspoon soda
• ½ t.s. cinnamon
• 1 kilo flour
• 300gr almonds
• 1 cup of olive oil
• little cognac –
brandy
• 20gr baking
powder
• icing sugar
Procedure
• Beat for 10 minutes the sugar
with the oil and butter.Add the
egg yolks, cinnamon, brandy,
soda , baking powder and
flour.
• Roast the almonds for 5
minutes and cut them in small
pieces.
• Add them in the mixture
• Make small balls and bake for
20 min. at 175 degrees. Throw
icing sugar on them while hot.
12. Diples
• Ingredients for the syrop
• 5 eggs 500gr honey
• ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 cup water
• Salt ½ ts cinnamon
• 3,5 cups flour ½ ts clove
• Olive oil (for frying them)
• Chopped nuts(to sprinkle on them)
