4. “Our outlook is now decidedly international. It
is inspired by the fact that addressing the
great challenges of our time increasingly
requires collaboration among the world’s best
scholars. It is also driven by our desire to
help our students develop the global fluency
and cross-cultural perspectives they’ll need
to lead us forward.”

15. Global University Rankings as an Indicator for Internationalisation
Various international rankings with focus on international/global
HE emerged in the past few years highlighting the diversity of
institutional and sectoral excellence in HE across borders.
International rankings play a pivotal role in demonstrating the ‘globalness’ of HE
institutions and nations.
As a result rankings have also evolved to recognise institutional progress
in different aspects of internationalisation such as international income
generation, international partnerships, research impact, international
staff and students on campus and alike.
16. How Global BU 2018 Priorities Address this Opportunity?
Global BU 2018 priorities related to strategic
internationalisation themes (e.g. international
research collaborations and campus
internationalisation) give us the opportunity to
demonstrate our inter-nationalisation outcomes
through university rankings.

Leading a globally engaged university
A bubble for global staff, global students and global stakeholder
A continum below that-left side of it says local university and right side says global global staff students etc is right hand side left hand side is import/export
Can we insert examples of global universities?
In 2012, when BU2018 was launched, there were plenty of positives:
…but there were also some real challenges.
BU2018 had set a very clear vision - providing the foundation for a Global BU and setting out the ambitions for BU as a world-class university.
We had a thriving international student population and a large body of international staff; and extensive overseas collaborations across the academic footprint.
However, organisationally we had some challenges:
‘globalisation’ wasn’t considered core to university business; for many it was considered an ‘add-on’
global activity, whilst excellent in pockets, was fragmented across different departments.
Need a clear slide that mention talent thinking and traction-we should have this from JD?

Various international rankings with focus on international/global HE emerged in the past few years highlighting the diversity of institutional and sectoral excellence in HE.
As a result rankings have also evolved to recognize institutional progress in different aspects of internationalisation such as international income generation, international partnerships, research impact, international staff and students on campus and alike.
Equally, we welcomed the first rankings of global HE systems comparing the outcome and impact of internationalization efforts of whole nations earlier this year.
What I have attempted re providing implications for leadership grounded in Global BU’s journey + BU 2018 is how BU 2018 priorities (and outcomes) from your earlier slide link to success in university rankings, global profile and recognition - Global BU 2018 priorities related to strategic internationalisation themes (e.g. international research collaborations and campus internationalisation) are important for receiving external and unbiased recognition for the institutional internationalisation agenda outcomes through university rankings.
There is now global evidence that institutions from across all six continents are striving to demonstrate that they are globally-engaged institutions and world university rankings provide a level-playing field and enable the visibility of their internationalisation efforts and a good example here is the case of BRICS countries, which now hold over 15% of the best universities in the world when we use THE WUR as an example. Chinese universities alone now hold over 5% of world’s best universities according to THE WUR.
PS: I know the conference is also about China so with this slide you recognise the progress of China in internationalising its HE system by giving BRICs and China stats.
