*Currently, there are 3,000 legal refugees in Romania , but the rate is expected to
increase due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and Syrian Wars
20. Immigrating to Romania requires different documents . To be
approved for permanent residency, you must get the approval of the highest-
ranking member in the Romanian Office of Immigration and have all the
appropriate documents ready.
Temporary Resident Permit
This permit is for a foreign national who wishes to stay in Romania for 90
days within 6 rolling months.
Permanent Resident Permit
Two requirements must be met for a foreign national to be granted full
residency in Romania. The applicant must be married to a Romanian citizen
or must stay in Romania with a temporary residency permit for a minimum of
3 years.
21. By gaining citizenship in Romania one is entitled to all the rights and
duties associated with the Constitution and the Romanian laws.
There are three ways to become a Romanian citizen:
1. If a child is born by Romanian parents or parent
2. If a child under the age of 18 is adopted by Romanian parent(s)
3. The other way requires more time and involves satisfying the following
conditions and making an application:
- Can prove devotion to the Romanian state and the Romanian people
- An immigrant must be at least 18 years old , born or reside in
Romanian territory at the time of the request for at least 5 years if married to a
Romanian citizen or 7 years otherwise
- He proves to be able to assure means of existence.
- He has not been convicted for any offense deemed to make someone
“unworthy of being a Romanian citizen”
- He can demonstrate proficiency in the Romanian language
