The spillway of Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Project is designed to
meet the following aspects:
Assure the discharge capacity required to pass the probable
maximum flood (47,490 m3/s) maintaining an acceptable
freeboard.
Assure the possibility to lower the reservoir to improve the
sediment flushing.
The spillway is located between the Navigation Lock and
Intermediate Block. The arrangement of the spillway consists of 7
bays of Surface Spillway (S1 to S7) and 4 bays of Low Level Outlet
(L1 to L4) as shown in Figure 1 below. The design of the spillway
incorporates results of the physical hydraulic model tests carried
out in the Hydraulics Laboratory, Asian Institute of Technology.
