Basics of Universal Design
“Universal design” is the design strategy with the goal of
permitting any person, regardless of any type of disability or
disposition, to fully utilize a service or product
This philosophy can be applied in many different fields
(Burgstahler)
When used in the field of education, this strategy is called
“Universal Design for Learning” (UDL) [UDLCenter] or
“Universal Design of Instruction” (UDI) [“Universal…”]

Analysis of UDL and its 3 main
guidelines
Two key words for implementation of UDL are “multiple means”
Use many methods of teaching to appeal to different learning styles
Use “multiple means” of representation (teaching students), expression
(letting students experiment with what they have learned), and
engagement (letting students utilize what they have learned)
