Universal Design: What
is it?
According to the National Universal Design
Center, universal design is a way to make
learning accessible to all students.
Dr. David Rose from the NUDC states that
universal design is employed to "get those
students who have been marginalized" by
the current curriculum. “
•
The goal of UDI is to maximise the learning
of students with a wide range of
characteristics by applying UD principles to
all aspects of instruction (e.g., delivery
methods, physical spaces, information
resources, technology, personal
interactions, assessments)." (Burgstahler)
•
The chart shows the standards for
reaching "knowledgable", "goal-directed",
and "motivated learners". Thereby
increasing learning for a wider swath of
students
3. What are the Implications
of Universal Design?
•
"UDL includes Universally Designed Instruction (UDI) as well as
the concept of universally designed curriculum (UDC) and
Universal Design in Assessment (UDA)" (Universal Design for
Learning: Reaching All, Teaching All)
•
Students will have greater access to assistive technology to
help their learning. such as iPads, computers, SMARTboards,
etc.
•
Universal design would refocus the curriculum's instruction
with tools and methods that are more engaging to all students,
rather than a select few. Planning lessons that adhere to the
curriculum would mean taking each students' disabilities and
disadvantages into account to insure the most learning takes
place.
•
Accommodations are implemented for students who have
difficulty in a certain area of learning. Giving extra time to a
student, or allowing them to press buttons instead of a
scantron is an example of UDL. (Axelson, 2005).
4. How is Universal Design Implemented in
the Classroom?
•
UDL: Reaching All, Teaching All
has three main rules for
implementing UDL in the classroom:
– 1. Big Ideas- example: the writing of
a story. It encompasses several
"smaller ideas" such as
characterization and grammar.
– 2. Scaffolding- helping the student
gradually removing support so
students can learn for themselves.
– 3. Strategic Integration- integrate
subject with others. Example:
multiplication and division.
– See Social Studies class use UDL: it
includes big ideas, small ideas,
scaffolding, integration, and variety
of assessments!:

5. Implementation (Cont’d)
•
Teachers will plan their lessons in accordance
with the differences his/her students face in
the field of education. UD assessment will also
be used to assess the learning done under the
principles of UD. They can be used in general
instruction or specific lessons.
•
Areas of UDL an educator focus on are:
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
1. Class Climate
2. Interaction
3. Physical environment and products
4. Delivery methods
5. Information resources and technology
6. Feedback
7. Assessment8. Accommodation (Burgstahler)

technology to increase student comprehension!:

6. What are the Benefits
of Universal Design?
•
Universal Design of Learning
increases student engagement,
student comprehension, and
overall learning.
•
"The online, multimedia delivery
of assessment can offer greater
flexibility in interaction than
print-based assessments.
•
That flexibility can enable
assessments to be more closely
matched with the diverse ways
in which students receive,
process, and respond to
information" - Axelson, 2005)
