Cellular respiration occurs in three stages: glycolysis in the cytoplasm, the Krebs cycle in the matrix of mitochondria, and the electron transport chain in the cristae of mitochondria. Glycolysis breaks down glucose, the Krebs cycle further oxidizes the products, and the electron transport chain generates ATP through an electron transport system located in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
