2. Klaipėda history
The old name of Klaipeda is Memel. It is believed that the
local Baltic tribes (Skalvians and possibly Couronians) called
like that the flow in the lower reaches of the Nemunas and
the German Order just took over that name. Castle and the
town was given the name because it was considered Lagoon
isthmus at Dange River was the mouth of the Nemunas River.
3. It is not known when Samogitian name of Klaipėda
appeared. Sources refer to it only in the fifteenth
century: in the letter of Vytautas in 1413 is mentioned
Caloypede; in 1420 m. in Summary of Teutonic Order
negotiations with Vytautas was mentioned the castrum
Memel alias Klawppeda.
4. Klaipėda castle
Klaipeda Castle was built in 1253 in strategically
important piece of Curonian land - on the left bank of
the estuary near the Klaipeda Strait, which connects
the lagoon with the Baltic Sea.
5. Later the castle was rebuilt many times until the
nineteenth century when it lost its strategic
importance and it was demolished. Currently, there is a
museum in the surviving bastions of the castle.
6. International ferries
Klaipeda has got two ferries: the old one in city centre
and the new one in south of downtown, who moves to
Smiltynė...
7. Cruise Ship Terminal
Terminal by the port that was launched in 2003. The terminal
operator assigned to the AB “Klaipeda Ship Repair” The
terminal occupies 1.2 hectares and is located away from the
center of Klaipeda and only 100 meters to the west. The
terminal berths (No. 28-33)
can accommodate up to 315 meters long,
45 meters wide and 8.6 meters draft.
8. Sea festival
Sea Festival - an annual celebration of Klaipeda city,
traditionally held the last weekend in July. First Sea Festival
(Sea Day) was organized in 1934. August 12. Lithuanian Western
Union initiative. It was attended by 60 thousand. citizens and
visitors. During the interwar period, it was promoted in the
sea,
Marine and maritime occupations.
Celebration attended by important
representatives of Lithuanian society,
politicians.
9. Dolphinarium
A dolphinarium is an aquarium for dolphins. The dolphins are usually
kept in a large pool, though occasionally they may be kept in pens in
the open sea, either for research or for public performances. Some
dolphinariums consist of one pool where
dolphins perform for the public, others are
part of larger parks, such as marine mammal
parks, zoos or theme parks, keeping other
animals and having other attractions as well.
