This document provides an introduction to a workshop on using digital technologies to support resilience. It defines resilience as the ability of individuals, communities, and systems to withstand shocks and stresses and adapt. It outlines several shocks and stresses facing Asia, such as natural disasters, urbanization, climate change, and lack of healthcare access. The document then discusses scaling digital solutions through replication or diversification. It provides examples of digital technologies deployed in Asia to support resilience and addresses questions to consider when planning such deployments, such as how users will be engaged and how solutions can be sustained.
3. This workshop aims to
• Provide a glance at a tool that can help you with designing and
planning to effectively, appropriately, and sustainably deploy
digital technologies to support resilience
5. Resilienceis the capacity of individuals, communities and systems to
survive, adapt, and grow in the face of stress and shocks, and even transform
when conditions require it.
Building resilience is about making people, communities and systems better
prepared to withstand catastrophic events—both natural and manmade—and
able to bounce back more quickly and emerge stronger from these shocks and
stresses.

6. Growing income inequality | 25-35% of income inequality in Asia is due to skills gap
(source)
Natural disasters | in 2017, 44% of all disasters, 58% of all related deaths, and 70% of
people affected were in Asia (CRED)
Urbanization and pollution | welfare losses from air pollution in 2013 were equivalent
to 7.5% of GDP in East and South Asia (World Bank)
Climate change | by 2050, yields for wheat, rice and maize are estimated to decrease
compared to 2000 levels, increasing total number of malnourished children by 11
million (IFPRI)
Increased migration | more than 40% of international migrants were
born in Asia (UN)
Insufficient healthcare | at least 40% of people in Asia-Pacific lack access to health
insurance (UNESCAP)
Key shocks, stresses, and gaps in Asia
7. Basically, we’re referring to two different pathways:
• Scaling through replication, where the experience of a digital
solution is replicated for more users, often in more geographies or
through expansion into another vertical
• Scaling through diversification, where an organization diversifies its
products and services to offer new solutions to achieve scale

What do we mean by scale?
8. In short, we’re talking about continued existence based on a
business model that is not dependent upon short-term donor
funding.
Unsustainable solutions, are at their core, not resilient and
therefore lack the ability to enable enhanced resilience over
time.
And sustainability?
