Abstract
1. ABSTRACT<br />The study investigated the effects of automation on library services in University of Education Library. It looked at relevance of automation to the staff and users, the benefits, effects, on management, operations, training and performance. The researcher used a case study approach, with qualitative and quantitative methods. This includes interview, documentary source and personal observation. The population was 80 for the staff, 120students, 11 lecturers and 3 supporting staff. Convenience sampling was used. Questionnaire was administered to respondents at the University of Education Library, Computer Laboratories and offices of lecturers at their convenience.<br />The major findings revealed significant awareness and urgency of automation among staff and students; I.C.T. facilitates the completion of assignments, lesson notes, research and learning. The study also showed that automation affected management and operations of the library. The study also revealed training needs of staff and users of automation facilities in the library. It concluded that the effectiveness and efficiency in the service delivery could be achieved through periodic assessment which aims at adopting strategies for improvement of performance.<br />The result prompted the following recommendations: The need for adequate education and orientation in the implementation process; teamwork approach in the management of the new system; training programmes for all users who will be affected by the system and finally a periodic review that will take customers’ satisfaction into consideration. <br />
