2. INTRODUCTION
๏ Kidney failure, also known as renal
failure or renal insufficiency, is a
medical condition of impaired kidney
function in which the kidneys fail to
adequately filter metabolic
wastes from the blood.
3. TYPES OF KIDNEY FAILURE
๏ Acute kidney injury which is often
reversible with adequate treatment
๏ chronic kidney disease which is often
not reversible. In both cases, there is
usually an underlying cause.
4. ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY
๏ Acute kidney injury (AKI), previously
called acute renal failure (ARF), is an
abrupt loss of kidney function that
develops within 7 days.
5. ๏ Its causes are numerous. Generally it
occurs because of damage to the
kidney tissue caused by
decreased kidney blood
flow (kidney ischemia) from any cause
(e.g., low blood pressure), exposure
to substances harmful to the kidney,
an inflammatory process in the kidney,
or an obstruction of the urinary
tract that impedes the flow of urine.
6. CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE
๏ Chronic kidney disease (CKD), also
known as chronic renal disease, is
progressive loss in kidney
function over a period of months or
years.
๏ The symptoms of worsening kidney
function are not specific, and might
include feeling generally unwell and
experiencing a reduced appetite.
7. STAGES OF CKD
๏ Stage1-5
๏ stage 1 being the mildest and usually
causing few symptoms
๏ stage 5 being a severe illness with
poor life expectancy if untreated.
๏ Stage 5 CKD is often called end-stage
kidney disease, end-stage renal
disease, or end-stage kidney failure
8. ESRD
End stage renal disease (ESRD) is
the last stage (stage five) of chronic
kidney disease (CKD) When
CKD, polycystic kidney disease
(PKD) or other kidney diseases develop
into ESRD, dialysis or a kidney
transplant is necessary to live.
