5. INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, BANGALORE.
Doshi was given the Bangalore commission in 1977 after the shortlist
of Architect had been screened .The site was on a hilly area to the
south of Bangalore.
The climate in this part of India is not remotely as fierce as it
around Ahmedabad. There is adequate humidity and plants grow
abundantly through of IIM, Bangalore as a pattern of indoor and
outdoor spaces.
His earlier sketches showed the institution as facal teaching area
with fingers extending into the surrounding landscape, an idea
reminiscent of Khan’s diagonal flotillas of dormitories stretching
away from teaching courts in his IIM at Ahmedabad.
In the late 1970s ,Doshi’s plan tightened up so that the academic
zones were arranged around interlocking courts and terraces linked
by galleries.
7. STYLES ,FORMS USED IN THIS
The dormitories became angled courtyard buildings linked
together by walkways and verandahs .
The plan of the complex as a whole now had obvious debts to
Fatehpur Sikri if not to the maze like space of Southern Indian
temple cities.
Even though the enclosure must vary according to specific
functions, walls, columns ,ceiling are manipulated to create this
ambiguity and duality and to articulate the space, creating fluidity
and continuity punctured walls, colonnades low walls are all
elements used to reach this goal.
This delicate trellis vocabulary was combined with a wall system
using rough blocks of local gray granite.
Such “Sources” were thoroughly translated into a simple and
standardised system of modern.
8. USE OF NATURE BY ARCHITECT IN THIS
BUILDING
Greenery was a third material introducing a vital vegetal ornament.
It might also be right to speak of light and shade as a texture integral to the buildings main
ideas.
Doshi tried to make the most out of the confrontation of modern construction(hovering
concrete walkways, cantilevered trays, etc.).
It can be understood as an analogue of the traditional Indian city.
He referred to the complex as a “bazaar for Education”.
At IIM, Doshi struggled to work out an appropriate grammar of detail, and the combination of
stone walls and slender concrete elements suggests the influence of Joseph Stein.
And the “parasol” used in some of the IIM walkways is indebted to both Le Corbusier’s
hovering slabs and to garden buildings with pergolas in the Bangalore area.
The windows in the dormitory blocks were probably inspired by drawing of Bhutanese
dwellings.
