Generally refers to actions that are in
progress, that is, that are occurring at the
right moment in which we are talking.

Is used for actions that occurred at a specific
time in the past. Like the present continuous,
it is formed with the auxiliary verb "to be"
and the gerund.

The uses of the Continuous Past.
1) Temporary situations:
Manuel is studying English.
2) They may be happening right now:
I am talking to Javier.
3) Repeat actions:
They are always helping each other.
How it forms
1. First the subject: WE (We)
2. Second: the present form of the verb
'to be': ARE (we are)
3. Third: The verb in GERUNDIO (Verbo
+ "-ing"): READING (reading)
WE + ARE + READING
Suj. + To Be + (Verbo) –ing
We can also use the contracted form of
the verb 'to be':
He’s drinking a glass of wine
They’re playing
Denial and Interrogation
1. In order to create the negative form of
the present continuous only the
particle 'not' must be inserted
between the verb 'to be' and the verb
in gerund:
He is NOT jumping
2. To create the interrogative form, as in
the verb 'to be', the order of the phrase will
be inverted and the verb 'to be' will be
placed first and then the subject:
You are reading
Are you reading?
Phrases
1- You are seeing Jane
tomorrow
You are not seeing Jane
tonight–You aren’t seeing
Jane tomorrow.
Actions that began in the past and
we want to point out that they had
a certain duration.
I was eating an apple, when I fell
to the ground.
The interrogation in the
continuous past
To construct the
interrogation, the verb "to be"
and the subject are simply
reversed:
Structure of the interrogation:
Was / were + [SUBJECT] +
[VERB with ending -ing
(gerund)]?
Conjugation of the continuous pastDenial in the continuous past

adding the adverb "not"
