Sunset Boulevard Play Analysis
On November 10th I went to see Sunset Boulevard. It was at the White Theatre at the Jewish
Community Center. When trying to decide whether the show was a comedy or a drama, I was
stumped. However, I finally decided it was more of a drama than a comedy. For it to be a comedy, it
would have needed to have a lighter plot, which may have included Joe not dying and possibly more
humor. I was not sure to begin with because there were some points throughout the play that were
funny. However, drama, and even tragedy, can have comical parts and sometimes comedies are not
comical. For instance, Chekov considered his plays to be comedies, however, most people would
argue otherwise. Since the play was about the events leading up to Joe's death, I think ... Show more

The problem was with the drops. Sometimes when they came down, if there was a piece of furniture
in the way it would hit it and get stuck. At one point, Joe had to adjust the drop so it would go all the
way down. The thing I found most impressive was the gunshot. The sound and the action were
simultaneous. For a moment, I believed it was a real gun. Anyways, I really liked this play because
of how the plot and the twist at the end. I think the director did a phenomenal job at piecing
everything together to create a good performance that supports what the playwright intended. I had
not read or seen the play before I went, so I didn't really know what to expect. However, while
watching it I realized that I had seen episodes of television shows that have tipped their hat to the
play. I do wish that I would have read the play before I went, though. I know that doing so could set
high expectations, but I think it would have made it more fun. It would be exciting to see what I had
previously read before my eyes. For instance, after reading The Glass Menagerie, I really want to
see the play. I think I would have felt similar had I read the play first. My mother went with me to
the play, and after wards we talked about the different themes of it. It was interesting to hear what
she thought about it, and there were some parts I had to clue her in on. She is not a big fan of plays,
however, I think she liked it because I managed to get her to go

SUNSET BOULEVARD

Name
The movie Sunset Boulevard written by Billy Wilder highlights the screenwriter's potential of
making a reflexive film more than focusing on the style and aesthetics. The movie revolves around
the life of a fallen silent movie star, Norma Desmond, and her fame delusions. With the introduction
of the sound in the film industry, she is brushed off and forgotten not only by her associates but also
by her dear fans. This lifestyle change caused her to be drawn into the world of superstardom and
luxury that she developed for herself in mind. Her universe involved her mansion full of photos
framed of her memories and herself in her past. She identifies very strong with her condition that

The Wilder's Sunset Boulevard wasn't only scaring due to the controversial subject matter alone, but
also due to the realistic casting the leading roles. Swanson Gloria was astounding in the part of
Desmond Norma because of her real–life skill with her faded career. Similarly, Stroheim's career
also diminished after the twenties, as it prepared him for his role that undertook as the silent–film
director that turned the butler in the film. The most interesting idea of this life–like cast was the
chemistry between these two role characters due to their relationships of the past

10, 1950 in New York City. The film was directed by Billy Wilder, and produced and co–written by
Charles Brackett. The film was named after the boulevard that runs through Los Angeles and
Beverly Hills, California. Film stars William Holden as Joseph C. Gillis, an unsuccessful

into her fantasy world where she dreams of making a great comeback to the big screen, with Erich
von Stroheim as Max Von Mayerling, Norma's devoted servant. Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd
Gough, and Jack Webb also make an appearance in this film and play supporting roles. Sunset Blvd.
was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won three. The film was noted to be "culturally and
historically" by the U.S. Library of Congress in 1989. Sunset was also included in the first group of
films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Sunset Boulevard was ranked number
twelve on the American Film Institute's list of the one hundred best American films of the twentieth
century in 1998.

Film Analysis Of Sunset Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder features some very legendary and prominent actors as
well as directors which helps make this film and instant classic. What makes this movie so unique is
that there are both actors and directors in the movie who play themselves. The film stars notable
actors and actresses such as Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Buster Keaton, Hedda Hopper, and
Anna Q. Nilsson. It also features two very prominent directors, Erich von Stroheim and the
infamous Cecil B. DeMille. The actors and actresses seemed to be made for these roles and help turn
this movie into a classic. The over the top acting done by Gloria Swanson, the overly, flamboyant
setting, and the musical score by Franz Waxman all help contribute to make this film a classic.
Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson who plays a washed up silent movie star (Norma Desmond)
which was not too much of a far stretch for her since she had in fact been a silent movie star back in
her heyday. It also stars William Holden who plays a has–been writer down on his luck (Joe Gillis)
who just happens to land himself in Norma Desmond's home. While sidetracked at her home, Joe
decides to help her redo the script she had written. She offers him a place to stay while helping her
with her script, he reluctantly agrees. She falls for him and the feeling isn't exactly mutual but he
realizes that being a kept man might not be such a bad gig. It is clear that they both need one

Themes Of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
The song, 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', by 'Green Day' is a song that highlights the key themes of
isolation and loneliness not only the singer feels but a large amount of society feel, especially during
a crisis or depressing time. The way in which the singer (Billie Joe Armstrong) feels and reflects on
the composer's experience of living in a world all on his own is relatable for many listeners. It does
however, give listeners a sense of hope that one day the loneliness could subside as not only does
life go on, but there may be someone who finds and understands you and your situation. When
facing challenges, we as individuals mostly have a mindset of feeling like we are the only one going
through a rough, when in actual fact, many people have been in a similar situation. The intention of
the song is raise awareness of the loneliness and depression many people feel. It inspires listeners to
keep going despite the hardship they may be experiencing. It also informs listeners to be aware of
the seriousness of depression and how it can rule wider society without many people noticing.
A significant theme presented throughout the whole song is loneliness. The thought of being lonely
and feeling isolated is not desirable and can trigger an individual's feeling of low self worth which
can then lead to more severe mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. The lyric "I
walk a lonely road" demonstrates the loneliness the composer, Billie feels as he implies that he is

Sunset Boulevard And Singing In The Rain
Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Singing in the Rain (1952) both use the transitions from silent to
sound movies to help drive the narrative. Director Billy Wilder's film, Sunset Boulevard and Gene
Kelly and Stanley Donen's Singing in the Rain utilize camera movements and sound to advance the
plot.
Sunset Boulevard follows an unsuccessful screenwriter, Joe Gillis (William Holden), whom a past
movie star, Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), hires to help her return to the big screen. Police find
the body of Joe Gillis in a swimming pool. In a flashback, Joe explains events that happen prior to
his death. Joe tries selling a script to Paramount Studios to pay for his car but they refuse his script.
When a group of men try to repossess Joes car, Joe escapes by hiding the car in a deserted mansion.
Norma hires Joe to rewrite a script that she wants to star in and accepts his situation by moving into
the mansion. Joe learns that Norma use to be a silent film star who believes that she's still famous.
Norma's butler, Max Von Mayerling (Erich von Stroheim), explains that he writes Norma fan letters
and that Norma has made suicide attempts. Later, Joe wants to leave the mansion but returns since
Norma cuts her wrists. At nights, Joe sneaks out to work on a script with Betty Schaefer (Nancy
Olson) and the two fall in love. Joe informs Norma that no one remembers her and that there will be
no comeback causing Norma to shoot Joe who falls in the pool. Policemen and reporters appear at

Analysis Of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" speaks about the isolation of a person as a result of following a
different life route than the other people around them. Billie Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day,
reaches out to the many listeners that feel unaccepted for their wants, passions, and beliefs. His song
goes through a sequence of examples encompassing the idea around following an empty road, where
no one is there to understand his viewpoints and straying off a path that is "ideal" from society, or
the people around him. Armstrong begins by setting a scene with an isolated road that leads to
unknown places. He says, "I walk a lonely road," which was "The only one that I have ever known,"
implying that ever since he was born, he has always been an outcast for his thoughts or passions. His
whole life sequence is represented by this on–going road that is so far away, and so different, from
the people around him. He then transitions from describing the road that he has always been on, to
paint a picture of a "Boulevard of Broken dreams, where the city sleeps." Armstrong is in this city, a
place, stereotypically, that should always be "awake" and bright, that is sleeping while he is on a
road, or boulevard of his broken dreams. The passions that he has and wants to pursue, his "dreams,"
are shut out from the rest of the society and his peers, who just sleep and ignore him while he walks
alone with his broken and unaccepted dreams. Through his perspective, everyone around him can

The Vanity of Celebrity Fame: "Sunset Boulevard" and...
A celebrity is not a person known for his/her talent or achievement, but an individual recognized for
his/her reputation created by the media. The phase of stardom is slippery, and media may choose to
represent celebrities varying from exaggerated admiration to mockery. The three texts chosen,
movie "Sunset Boulevard", feature article "Over the Hilton" and television show "Celebrity
Uncensored Six" are texts presenting different perception of celebrities than their usual images –
either corrupted by the encircling media, overloads oneself with self–indulgence, or just mocks
celebrity in a broad spectrum. Such media items empower and impresses the audience by perceiving

Besides being at the brink of madness caused by her self–denial of the passing of her fame, Norma
Desmond had also become rather sexual–transgressive. Some male traits shown in Norma consist of
her dominance – she demands over Max, financial independence – owns factories which constantly
makes profits and her assertive nature – she fearlessly confronts her passion for Joe. The way Norma
is ridiculously insane to a degree of dark humour brings sympathy, entertainment and a corrupted
depiction of celebrity to audiences.
Starred by William Holden, the male protagonist, given one of the most mundane names, Joe Gillis,
is a laconic character who interacts with Norma in a reciprocally dependent relationship. Without
Gillis, Norma feels lifeless, loveless and powerless, she depends on him emotionally, and
conversely, without Norma, Gillis is homeless, finance–less and jobless, he depends on her
materialistically. Also, identical to Norma, Gillis is sexually transgressive as well. He possesses
many feminine identities such as his betrayal of integrity – Joe and Norma swaps roles. He
conforms to the reality where his scripts are rejected and adopt the easier role of being Norma
Desmond's gigalo – weakness of character. In Gillis, audiences see a man who forfeited his personal
happiness to gain money–oriented power over others – however, what he really gained is nothing,
Norma nor her money can give him power. The

Sunset Boulevard Movie Essay
Sunset Boulevard is a movie that needs no introduction, but to keep to proper essay format, I will
give it one anyways. This 1950 classic is a staple in the book of Billy Wilder's film making genius.
Directed and written in part by Wilder, this film not only utilized Billy's classic comedy–noir charm,
but paired him with the incredible John Seitz, and Franz Waxman. William Holden and Gloria
Swanson do a marvelous job at capturing the depth of their characters, and embody the style of
everything that makes 50's Hollywood incredible. But the combination of the three aforementioned
men make for a hard hitting behind the scenes team, one that near outshines the actors themselves.
This being the only film that Wilder made which focused on film–making as a topic in its fictional
story arc; he made a few key decisions which made this a great movie. Wilder chose to allow the
setting to portray itself. While this may be an obvious choice for a movie about Hollywood, using
real locations keeps the setting alive. Wilder also had many actors and directors portray themselves.
This creates a very organic setting, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nominated for seven academy awards for his work in cinematography, and propelled by Wilder's
film noir style, we see the excellent use of lighting and camera work that is almost lost on modern
cinema. The more sinister characters are silhouetted, obscured by clouds of their own cigarette
smoke, or viewed from a slightly upward angle, as to make them appear looming and threatening.
The protagonist of our film is always well lit, shot from a level surface, and is often wholly visible
in every frame he inhabits. Less serious and goofy characters often take up very small portions of
the screen, and are shot on a downward angle, as if to make us literally look down upon them. As
important as the use of angles with characters are, the score to the film is a character all its own.
Franz Waxman is the mastermind behind this very

A Response To Sunset Boulevard
A Response to Sunset Boulevard (1950) A film noir is defined by Webster dictionary as: a type of
movie about crime that uses dark shadows and lighting to show the complicated moral nature of the
subject. Sunset Boulevard is an excellent example of this type of film due to the intense atmosphere,
the suspenseful and melancholy background music that coordinates with the scenes, and also other
things. The film is centered around one main idea: the characters tiptoeing around Norma
Desmond's mental illness. Though Norma has been out of the acting career for 20 years, her biggest
dream is to make a comeback. She still considers herself a star, and believes her way of redeeming
herself is by writing a film and starring in it. However, after hiring

Sunset Boulevard Film Analysis
Billy Wilder's famous and well known film called Sunset Boulevard is a masterpiece for the ages.
Even though it is in black and white, don't think it isn't good. This film has so many twist and turns,
the audience doesn't know what's going to happen next (even though you know the Writer in the
movie is going to die because of the flash back). I thought the movie was interesting with the
beginning of the film when they start out with the dead man floating motionless in the pool as police
officers rush to the senses to understand what had happened to the dead movie writer. Also, later in
the film that really interested me that was never answered in the film was the funeral for the dead
ape and how it had anything to do with the plot of the movie.
Sunset Boulevard is a film about a forgotten, living in her own world of being an old silent star
crushed by new films with sound in her enormous mansion with just herself and her butler. As she
just sits inside her house watching her old films, dreaming of her comeback and how it would bring
her back as being the biggest star on hollywood. But the film isn't just a story about an
unremembered famous actress, it's also a story about love, and this love theme helps makes the film
seem more interesting instead of a boring movie about an old actress living in her glory days. Gloria
Swanson plays the silent star trying to get back on top named Norma Desmond, with her role of a

A fragment of life in Hollywood is being spread over the screen of the Music Hall in Sunset
Boulevard. Utilizing as the premise of their forthcoming, burning dramatization a shameful
circumstance including a blurred, maturing quiet screen star and a destitute, pessimistic youthful
scriptwriter, Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder (with an aid from D. M. Marshman, Jr.) have
composed an effective story of the aspirations and disappointments that join to make life in the
cardboard city so entrancing to the outside world.
Sunset Boulevard is in no way, shape or form an adjusted story of Hollywood, past or present. Be
that as it may it is such a cunning compound of truth and legend–and is so lavishly fragrant of the
past, yet so contemporaneous–that it apparently talks with extraordinary power. Sunset Boulevard is
that uncommon mix of impactful composition, master acting, excellent course, and inconspicuously
aesthetic photography which rapidly does magic over a crowd of people and holds it excited to a
shattering peak.
Gloria Swanson was persuaded out of long retirement to depict the woeful, overlooked film
monarch, Norma Desmond, and now it can be said that it is endless that any other individual may
have been considered for the part. As the rich, boastful relic urgently longing to hear again the
approvals of the swarm, Miss Swanson commands the picture. Indeed in those few scenes when she
is not on–screen her vicinity is felt like the overwhelming fragrance of tuberoses

The Thematic Intentions of
Sunset Boulevard
The film Sunset Boulevard directed by Billy Wilder and staring the main characters of Norma
Desmond, Joe Gillis, and Max Von Mayerling is ideal example of how important film making
techniques help depict a movie's core theme intentions with vivid clarity. Classic Hollywood is the
first thing that comes to mind when one speaks about this film's style. This signature category
combined with the visual style of realism and it's continuity editing; detailed mise–en–scene and all
of its characteristics; and lastly the use of reoccurring motifs with formalistic qualities make the
audience grasp the central theme of just how vicious the actual motion industry can be to the ...

He says, "...poor sucker, he always wanted a pool." This here is our first look at one of the motifs
involving the idea of a dream. Throughout the movie that motif is seen in several different ways, this
is just one of them. In almost all of the depictions this "dream" is some how linked with being
shattered or simply not being what it's thought to be all. The jest of it is the fact that it does draw a
parallel to extreme negativity and it also begins to show specifically how Wilder uses formality in
parts of his direction.
For this establishing scene the realism is viewed simply through the continuity editing that I have
already touched on in some detail about the actual shots, angles, and camera movements involved
here. This "invisible" style that is seen in so many Classic Hollywood films makes it seem like what
is shown definitely could happen in real life. The only thing here that might not go hand in hand
with that is the fact that this type of depiction was definitely not what the industry and the audience
in their own reality was used to. Therefore, the superior thing about this fact is that because we
know that it was not normal for its' time, it takes that central theme of industry decryption and
makes it even more poignant by itself and especially to the people that first saw this

Film, also called a movie or a motion picture, is a form of art of simulating experiences to
communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings by the means of moving images along with other
sensory stimulations such as sound effect and background music. Most of the films express their
main ideas through a fictional plot in a fictional setting. For example, Thor: Ragnarok, a 2017
American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios
Motion Pictures, takes the audience through Thor's storyline and brings out the themes of personal
growth and heroism. Some of the other films are based on true stories, attempting to recreate a

Most actors do not continue making films one after another until they die but Norma could not get
this into her head. She spent years writing her script to return to the big screen and was set on that
dream. Since Norma was obsessed with the goal of filming again it led her to become foolish about
how famous she actually was and her terrible script. Also a scary realization of having a chance of
ending up demented like Norma. The directors wanted to show us a alarming visual of what life
could be like for actors after their acting days were over.
I recommend this film for anybody that is interested in movies with the genre drama. The film refers
to many references to past Hollywood and screenwriters, so it would help if you know a little bit of

Sunset Boulevard (Wilder 1950) explores the intermingling of public and private realms, puncturing
the illusion of the former and unveiling the grim and often disturbing reality of the latter. By delving
into the personal delusions of its characters and showing the devastation caused by disrupting those
fantasies, the film provides not only a commentary on the industry of which it is a product but also a
shared anxiety about the corrupting influence of external perception. Narrated by a dead man,

When Norma asserts her self–worth, she does so surrounded by images of herself. "I am big," she
proclaims, with a thousand Norma Desmonds staring back at the camera from photographs, posters,
and artistic renditions of the once famous face. "It's the pictures that got small." This convolution of
reality, a reversal that gives Desmond the illusion of both control and continued adoration by
nonexistent fans, provides the foundation for all her more severe misperceptions. As long as it is the
cinema itself that has lost its appeal and not the former silent film star, a change of fates or
Desmond's own gracious compromise have the potential to restore her former glory. As she
ultimately confesses, Norma feels that she left the spotlight (not the other way around) and that it
has been waiting for her ever since. A belief that her seclusion is voluntary allows Desmond to avoid
the finality of her fall from grace. The relationship between Joe Gillis and Norma Desmond also
holds close corporeal ties to the protagonist's material wealth and visual relationship with
Desmond's mansion. Joe's car, the symbol of masculinity and independence, embodies the man's
desperation and his initial motivations for accepting a job with Norma. As Joe admits, the loss of his
car is commensurate to "having (his) legs cut off" and represents the final blow to his dreams of
Hollywood success. At first Joe sees in his venture with Norma a purely professional

St Lawrence Boulevard History
The St. Lawrence boulevard is one of Canada's most known and talked about roads. In the collective
imagination, it has long been the street that separates Montreal in half, which is quite understandable
since the St. Lawrence boulevard is the backbone of the great French–speaking city , it is the matrix
of Montreal. A tourist who would only have a few hours to get acquainted with the city should not
go elsewhere, since the whole city seems to be born from this particular avenue .
The St. Lawrence boulevard is full of history. Before becoming the large and impressive street it is
nowadays, this boulevard was the only path upon which travelers could get in and out of Montreal.
In fact, this unique street served as a pathway to link the North and the South shore of the island,
and consequently, it was a vital contributor to the development of Montreal . Any cargo or people
coming from Europe would enter the port and from there, take the St. Lawrence road in order to
reach their new settlement. In 1717, the French colony built defensive walls around what we now

The Job Of A Social Worker
I. Introduction
The job of a social worker is not confined to one geographical area. As a social worker, one could
possibly visit several different neighborhoods in a single week. Because of the vast variety of clients
that a social worker may encounter, cultural competency and sensitivity is an important concept in
this field of work. According to Garthwait (2016), a social worker "must be capable of recognizing,
respecting, and accommodating differences while treating all clients with fairness and equality under
the law" (p.110). The capability to understand a client's culture, values, perspective, and life
experiences is crucial in determining which services will best suit the individual. Every client is
unique and needs to be treated as such. Thus becoming familiar with a community, a social worker
can better assist clients with their needs.
During Community Immersion, each group was assigned a community in which they were to assess.
One of the communities visited was the city of Santa Monica. Santa Monica is encompassed in 8.42
square miles (Census Bureau). Its borders are the Pacific Ocean to the west, Centinela Avenue to the
east, San Vicente Boulevard to the north, and Dewey Street to the south, as seen in Figure 1. Santa
Monica's residents may be known to lack diversity but the groups of people drawn to this city vary.
In the most popular areas of the city, it is seen that the appearance and tourism are of importance to
this community. This city is known for its

Film Review : Sunset Boulevard
Billy Wilder's film, Sunset Boulevard, was released in the 1950's as it continues to be a popular film
that catches people's attention. The film still captures the heart and mind of audiences that watch it
today with its very dramatic characters and scenes. This film demonstrates a variety of themes and
concepts through the choices of cinematography. Sunset Boulevard shows the dark side of
celebrities and the flaws or downfall of becoming famous. Some main components of the
cinematography in this film include the placement of lighting, the portrayal of specific scenes and
their symbolism, the music choices, camera angles, and the camera position. This film is black and
white but still contains many dark scenes that really capture the audience's attention and give a
suspenseful and depressing vibe. Norma Desmond is a washed–up movie star who only acted in
silent films. But, in Sunset Boulevard, silent films were outdated and Norma became outdated with
them. The silent film business was completely finished and films with talking began to get popular.
She lived in a mansion with her butler Max, who ironically was her ex–husband. Whenever Norma's
mansion is shown in the film it is very dark, messy, and broken. It seems to be a strong
representation of Norma's life since she still thinks that she is a huge movie actress, when in reality
everyone has moved on from her. When Joe first arrives at Norma's house, she is presented in very
dark colors with a dead animal in her house.

Sunset Boulevard is a film noir movie that was released in 1950. When looked at, the main character
Joe Gillis, portrayed by William Holden, can be seen as an anti–hero. Joe shows his anti–heroic
behavior in many ways. For example, he is dishonest, he uses the people around him, and he also is
only focused on elevating himself. One of the many examples of the dishonesty of Joe. One of the
most notable examples of his is when he meets Norma Desmond, portrayed by Gloria Swanson. He
starts out being noble by telling her that she should rethink let him look over the script, however, he
quickly becomes crooked. He tells her falsehoods to try and extort money out of her. This
transforms into him taking advantage of the situation.
He starts by taking advantage of Norma as the movie continues. Again, Joe starts being somewhat
noble by trying to tell Norma that he does not need to move into the house but stay at his apartment.
But, this changes when Norma tells him that everything has been paid for. He quickly drops the
argument and starts to live there. He also lets her buy him fancy suits and gifts without much if any
argument. It can also be seen that he is more concerned about the money and his elevating status ...

Essay about A Review of the Opening Sequence of Pretty Woman
A Review of the Opening Sequence of Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman is a romantic comedy, which is based on the stories of Cinderella, the Prince and the
Pauper and My fair lady. The film was produced in 1990 and directed by Garry Marshall. It is set in
the Hollywood hills and the rough Hollywood Boulevard. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts play the
two main characters, Vivien Ward and Edward Lewis. Edward is a wealthy man who is respected
and admired by others. Whereas Vivien is a lot poorer. Her only way of earning money is by her job
as a prostitute in Hollywood Boulevard.
In the film the music is very important. At the beginning it is set at a party. It is Edward's party so it
is very posh and classy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are also wearing lots of expensive jewellery like gold necklaces, bracelets, rings etc. Just by
looking at the people at the party you can tell straight away that they have lots of money and can
afford to buy expensive clothes and jewellery for parties.
When you first see Edward he is upstairs in his office away from the party. The walls in his office
are just plain white with not a lot of decoration and he is wearing a plain grey suit which is quite
dull and lifeless this is a signifier that he is a businessman and that he doesn't like to wear bright
colourful clothes and that he prefers to stay wearing neutral colours.
In contrast the first time we see Vivien we can see straight away that she lives a completely different
lifestyle to Edward. The first part we see of her that we see is her underwear when she is just waking
up. We don't see her face until the next shot of her when she is getting out of bed. When she gets up
she puts on some jewellery but it looks very cheap and tacky, this contrasts which the type of
jewellery the people at Edward's party were wearing. Once Vivien is out of bed we see what sort of
clothes she wears at night when she is out on the Hollywood Boulevard. She puts on an all–in–one
outfit which is a white top which is very short and very tight on her. It is attached to

The Movie ' Sunset Boulevard '
The film Sunset Boulevard (1950), directed by Billy Wilder, Norma Desmond exemplified a
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) by being demanding, intense and unstable. These behaviors
that are consistent with the elements of abnormality include suffering, social discomfort,
dangerousness, and irrationality and unpredictability. The first element that is consistent with Norma
Desmond's character is suffering. Desmond being one of the greatest movie stars in history suffers
as she experiences the fall from stardom. She also suffers from identity disturbance as she reaches
an unstable self–image notion. In one scene when Desmond recognizes for a moment about her age,
she claims, "Look at me. Look at my hands, look at my face, look under my ... Show more content

Fourth element is irrationality and unpredictability as stress–related and paranoia leads to irrational
thinking. In the very last scenes of the film, an unpredictable event occurs when Desmond kills
Gillas, and all of a sudden she then quickly hurries upstairs to prepare for a movie set while being
surrounded by the reporters and police officers. More importantly, with the case of Desmond, the
people around her feed her false belief because everyone is aware that she no longer is herself,
which leads to Desmond securing herself permanently into her fabricated world, then eventually led
to her demise. The film then ends as Desmond experiences the most unpredictable and irrational
behavior.
The causal models that best represent Norma Desmond's Borderline Personality Disorder
abnormality would be the Biological, Sociocultural, and Cognitive–Behavioral model. Firstly, the
biological model helps to determine the causal factors as research suggests that genetics play a
significant role in BPD as the text supports, "people with BPD often appear to be characterized by
lowered functioning of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is involved in inhibiting behavioral
responses" (344). Generally, genetics are a main aspect to BPD, however other models help to
identify Desmond's abnormality such as the sociocultural model, which helps to determine further
explanations on how the potential impact

Rationing and limited amounts of clothing material was necessary and that lead toward to simple
outfits using as little of material as possible. Once World War II rationing ended it inspired a new
fashion line, especially in women's clothing. A big addition to women fashion was the use of
petticoats and collars made with fine fabrics. While in mean it still stayed rather simple like sport
coats, suits, sweaters. Of course the clothing was may have been upgraded with more expense
fabrics and patterns. Another main difference is the smoking issue, back then smoking was almost
encouraged. They used it as a promoting aspect was almost a sex symbol. Unlike now smoking just
isn't a regular thing and is frowned upon. In the film it is accurate with the clothing along with how
smoking is so common. One scene that stands out with clothing is when Joe went to Artie's party
and was wearing his expensive suit that Norma bought for him and Artie's reaction was like he has
never seen that expensive of clothing before. It shows that this movies was separated by classes and
Norma even though she was forgotten was still part of the upper class while Joe and his friends was

Sunset Boulevard Film Analysis
Film noirs describe pessimistic films associated with black and white visual styles, crime fiction,
and dark themes. Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 film noir directed by Billy Wilder. Sunset Boulevard
presents many themes that are common with the genre film noir, but also introduces some
differences from the typical movie in that genre. The main similarity in Sunset Boulevard and a
typical film noir movie is that it was very melodramatic and over the top. Many film noir films have
very dramatic storylines and characters. Whenever something sudden and striking would happen,
the director would zoom in on the characters face in a very melodramatic manner. The girl in the
film, Norma, is very over the top whenever anything bad happens to her. When the main character,
William, is about to leave she threatens to kill herself and at one point even cuts her wrists
screaming and crying that she "would do it again." A lot of times Norma talks to herself in a very
dramatic manner including after she slaps William in the face and storms off. William's whole death
is melodramatic in the fact that she only shot him because he was leaving her and she would rather
he not be alive if he's not going to be with her. Her psychotic break at the end of the movie is not out
of nowhere, but is still flung on you out of the blue in a very sudden, melodramatic sense. The music
is common with dramatic movies with the almost stereotypical, "dun, dun, duns" in the soundtrack
whenever something serious and unexpected happens. Things move very quickly in this movie as
well as other film noir films. For example, he moves in with a woman he hardly knows, she falls in
love with him almost instantly, and he almost kisses an engaged woman the second time he meets
her. This fast pace, melodramatic theme is common in all film noir movies, especially in Sunset
Boulevard. The plot of Sunset Boulevard shares common aspects with many other film noir movies.
The whole plot of the movie is told by a dead man, William, which is a common theme of film
noirs. Especially taking in the facts that the whole story was one long flashback. Another common
aspect is the recurring voice over describing what is happening in the scene and what was going on

The Film Industry, Hollywood And The Movie Industry
Movie Industry/Hollywood
Hollywoodland, known as the most recognizable film industry in the world from the 1920's to now,
slowly went from black and white silent movies to colorful motion pictures in the screens. This lead
to a major production of movies along the road and introduction to big world famous stars that
helped with the expansion of the entertainment business. Hollywood became an overnight success
during the 1920's by making improvements in the film and motion picture industry.
Some symbols of fame were developed as Hollywood kept growing along the way in the 1920's
such as the Hollywood sign and the Walk of Fame. The Hollywood sign had a big meaning behind

Sunset Boulevard Symbolism

An explicit motif that was introduced was Norma's 1929 Isotta–Fraschini car. Which is a widely
desired car that even the studios wanted to use it in a movie. The car represents how as time goes by
nonliving items gain value and people like Norma loose value to others like how the directors don't
want to have old actors in new movies but want old cars in new movies. A symbol in the movie is
the implicit and explicit pictures of Gloria Swanson in her younger days as an actress in real life.
The symbol is that Norma can not get over her past accomplishments to live in the present day. Her
glorifications in life is only of her movies now that she is out off the business, the pictures are only
there to remind her of those days and retrospect make her feel less good about herself as a person
and actress. She still thinks people remember her by sending her fan mail but in turn that is only her
butler max sending her them so she has something to be happy about. The third symbol is the
graves, which represent her second and third husbands which like joe had enough of her crazy
obsession with her past and wanted to leave but they were the only ones to keep her happy so she
killed them when they threated to leave her so they could always be with her. Joe noticed them in
the beginning in the movie with a empty grave beside them unknown to Joe that that grave as for the

of the neighborhood is currently, Hayes would have been filthy rich. During the old days, San

A Comparison Of The Film Mulholland Dr.
Sunset Boulevard was one of the first films to cover the gray area between glory and the fall of a
celebrity, but not the only one. Borrowing many plot points from this film, a lesser known 2001
neo–noir movie Mulholland Dr. tells the story of a young starlet named Diane (or Betty, in Diane's
dream) who orders the killing of her girlfriend Camilla (or Rita), who got the role Diane auditioned
for. After a series of dreams and illusions, crushed by the weight of truth and guilt, Diane takes her
own life in her apartment. There are many similarities shared between the two films as both Norma
and Diane suffer from mental health conditions and could not wake up from the illusion induced by
the mental disorder (Diane committed suicide as soon as she came back to reality). Their fantasies
about themselves and the film industry were not an imagined scenario that represents the realization
of their impossible desires, since their wish to enter (or re–enter) the industry was not totally
impossible; but rather, the fantasy allows them to desire.6 Norma's fantasy of still being wanted by
the industry leads to her going to Cecil B. DeMille's studio in real–life, wanting to work with him
again to produce her film Salomé. A better illustration of this idea is Diane's fantasy with her failed
audition, in which she found closure. In her dream, a Cowboy talked to the director of the film she
was auditioning for, telling him that "the rest of the cast can stay, that's up to you. But the

For this assignment I chose to visit the McDonald's on Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach

first just after what could be considered the dinner rush. When walking into the store the first thing I
noticed was the floor was fairly dirty, especially near the trash receptacles. There were clearly
visible items of food that had fallen off of people's trays as they attempted to clear their trays off. I
got into the line to order and noticed that there were three people ahead of me. There was only one
McDonald's employee working the registers while I saw another standing by on their cell phone. I
believe the second employee not working the registers was a manager. She was unaware of the line
that had grown and when she looked up she signed into a register to help. I had gone into the store
with the intention of only ordering a sweet tea, but if I were to have been offered an item I would
buy it. I gave my order to the manager of only a sweet tea and she gave me my total. It was
interesting to see that the manager did not try to upsell my order as I was only getting a $1 drink. As
the drinks were a self–service, I went to go get the sweet tea and found they were out of sweet tea. I
informed the manager and she said they would get another one out. Rather than get a different drink

Sunset Boulevard Themes
Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950) is a uniquely crafted film that provides analytical insight, as
well critical underlying themes that focus on the very industry it was born from. The film itself is a
commentary of an evolving 1950's Hollywood, that used a sense of realism and irony not seen by
other films of its time (TCM). These themes are displayed practically flawlessly through clever and
entertaining use of of narration elements, motifs, and whimsical humor. From the very first scene,
the viewer's attention is grasped by a brilliant and engaging scene of foreshadowing. Never does the
film lose focus on its run, as no shot, nor scene fails to add to character development or further the
plot. The film has a wide array of talent within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout his work in the film industry, he gained high success in collaborations with two other
talented screenwriters and producers. Their names were Charles Brackett and I.A.L. Diamond.
Wilder and bracket co–wrote many of Wilder's films including Sunset Boulevard. When speaking on
his inspiration for the film in an interview with Vanity Fair, he cited that, "I wanted to make things a
little harder for myself, I wanted to do that thing which never quite works–a picture about
Hollywood" (Vanity Fair). At first Wilder and Bracket wanted to make the film a comedy and
envisioned the film as a celebrated comeback of a has–been silent film queen (Wilder, B). Though
the two eventually choose a semi–darker path for the film revolving around the plot we know today
and its suggestive commentary on the industry. In fear of censorship from the Paramount studios,
Wilder and Brackett made a phony working title for the film to throw off any overseers, accordingly
titled, A Can of Beans. In the film Wilder strived to give an accurate and realistic portrayal of what
he believed to be 1950's Hollywood. Though this venture was an entirely different experience for
Wilder, for he was not just writing another scrip. He was writing about an industry of which he
worked and lived in. The main character even carrying the same occupation as he did. Knowing this,

The marketing mix is defined as a unique blend of product, place, price, and promotion strategies
that would produce a satisfying exchange with the target market. The products of this store would
include foods that don't expire quickly and don't need to be refrigerated. For instance, Cheezits,
Pringles, fruit snacks, oatmeal, cereal, peanut butter, crackers, are considered to be food items in that
group. Other products the store would have is hygiene products such as deodorant, shampoo, body
wash, q–tips, facial tissues, toilet paper, toothbrushes, nail clippers, and toothpaste. Along with other
items such as word search books, Sudoku, scrapbooking materials to decorate the boxes. Each item
will have a few options such as a cheap and expensive version of each ... Show more content on

If the store was downtown, there are a lot of festivals and such throughout the year and a lot of
people would be walking around. I know when I go downtown I like to walk up and down the
streets to see what stores are around. Therefore, I feel like it would help in regards to trying to get
people in my store. However, if the store was on the boulevard there is a lot of traffic on that street
daily and if they see my store they might stop and want to take a look. Overall, the store would be
somewhere where there is a lot of traffic; however, I wouldn't want it by a Wal–Mart because it
would defeat the purpose. The prices of the products would cost the same as if they were in the
bigger stores. However, it is the promotion that would bring people in. For instance, if they bought
all of their products there and packaged it the sales promotion could either be free shipping of the
box or the box itself. In the advertisements, I could use military members or local people to want to
get people in the door. In a smaller city like Jefferson City, I think those types of advertisements
would bring more people in because it feels

Sunset Boulevard Play Analysis

  • 1. Sunset Boulevard Play Analysis On November 10th I went to see Sunset Boulevard. It was at the White Theatre at the Jewish Community Center. When trying to decide whether the show was a comedy or a drama, I was stumped. However, I finally decided it was more of a drama than a comedy. For it to be a comedy, it would have needed to have a lighter plot, which may have included Joe not dying and possibly more humor. I was not sure to begin with because there were some points throughout the play that were funny. However, drama, and even tragedy, can have comical parts and sometimes comedies are not comical. For instance, Chekov considered his plays to be comedies, however, most people would argue otherwise. Since the play was about the events leading up to Joe's death, I think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The problem was with the drops. Sometimes when they came down, if there was a piece of furniture in the way it would hit it and get stuck. At one point, Joe had to adjust the drop so it would go all the way down. The thing I found most impressive was the gunshot. The sound and the action were simultaneous. For a moment, I believed it was a real gun. Anyways, I really liked this play because of how the plot and the twist at the end. I think the director did a phenomenal job at piecing everything together to create a good performance that supports what the playwright intended. I had not read or seen the play before I went, so I didn't really know what to expect. However, while watching it I realized that I had seen episodes of television shows that have tipped their hat to the play. I do wish that I would have read the play before I went, though. I know that doing so could set high expectations, but I think it would have made it more fun. It would be exciting to see what I had previously read before my eyes. For instance, after reading The Glass Menagerie, I really want to see the play. I think I would have felt similar had I read the play first. My mother went with me to the play, and after wards we talked about the different themes of it. It was interesting to hear what she thought about it, and there were some parts I had to clue her in on. She is not a big fan of plays, however, I think she liked it because I managed to get her to go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Theme Of Sunset Boulevard SUNSET BOULEVARD Institution Name The movie Sunset Boulevard written by Billy Wilder highlights the screenwriter's potential of making a reflexive film more than focusing on the style and aesthetics. The movie revolves around the life of a fallen silent movie star, Norma Desmond, and her fame delusions. With the introduction of the sound in the film industry, she is brushed off and forgotten not only by her associates but also by her dear fans. This lifestyle change caused her to be drawn into the world of superstardom and luxury that she developed for herself in mind. Her universe involved her mansion full of photos framed of her memories and herself in her past. She identifies very strong with her condition that once it is ... Swanson Gloria was astounding in the part of Desmond Norma because of her real–life skill with her faded career. Similarly, Stroheim's career also diminished after the twenties, as it prepared him for his role that undertook as the silent–film director that turned the butler in the film. • 7. Film Analysis Of Sunset Boulevard Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder features some very legendary and prominent actors as well as directors which helps make this film and instant classic. What makes this movie so unique is that there are both actors and directors in the movie who play themselves. The film stars notable actors and actresses such as Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Buster Keaton, Hedda Hopper, and Anna Q. Nilsson. It also features two very prominent directors, Erich von Stroheim and the infamous Cecil B. DeMille. The actors and actresses seemed to be made for these roles and help turn this movie into a classic. The over the top acting done by Gloria Swanson, the overly, flamboyant setting, and the musical score by Franz Waxman all help contribute to make this film a classic. Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson who plays a washed up silent movie star (Norma Desmond) which was not too much of a far stretch for her since she had in fact been a silent movie star back in her heyday. It also stars William Holden who plays a has–been writer down on his luck (Joe Gillis) who just happens to land himself in Norma Desmond's home. While sidetracked at her home, Joe decides to help her redo the script she had written. She offers him a place to stay while helping her with her script, he reluctantly agrees. She falls for him and the feeling isn't exactly mutual but he realizes that being a kept man might not be such a bad gig. It is clear that they both need one another, though for much different ... • 9. Themes Of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams The song, 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', by 'Green Day' is a song that highlights the key themes of isolation and loneliness not only the singer feels but a large amount of society feel, especially during a crisis or depressing time. The way in which the singer (Billie Joe Armstrong) feels and reflects on the composer's experience of living in a world all on his own is relatable for many listeners. It does however, give listeners a sense of hope that one day the loneliness could subside as not only does life go on, but there may be someone who finds and understands you and your situation. When facing challenges, we as individuals mostly have a mindset of feeling like we are the only one going through a rough, when in actual fact, many people have been in a similar situation. The intention of the song is raise awareness of the loneliness and depression many people feel. It inspires listeners to keep going despite the hardship they may be experiencing. It also informs listeners to be aware of the seriousness of depression and how it can rule wider society without many people noticing. A significant theme presented throughout the whole song is loneliness. The thought of being lonely and feeling isolated is not desirable and can trigger an individual's feeling of low self worth which can then lead to more severe mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. The lyric "I walk a lonely road" demonstrates the loneliness the composer, Billie feels as he implies that he is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Sunset Boulevard And Singing In The Rain Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Singing in the Rain (1952) both use the transitions from silent to sound movies to help drive the narrative. Director Billy Wilder's film, Sunset Boulevard and Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen's Singing in the Rain utilize camera movements and sound to advance the plot. Sunset Boulevard follows an unsuccessful screenwriter, Joe Gillis (William Holden), whom a past movie star, Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), hires to help her return to the big screen. Police find the body of Joe Gillis in a swimming pool. In a flashback, Joe explains events that happen prior to his death. Joe tries selling a script to Paramount Studios to pay for his car but they refuse his script. When a group of men try to repossess Joes car, Joe escapes by hiding the car in a deserted mansion. Norma hires Joe to rewrite a script that she wants to star in and accepts his situation by moving into the mansion. Joe learns that Norma use to be a silent film star who believes that she's still famous. Norma's butler, Max Von Mayerling (Erich von Stroheim), explains that he writes Norma fan letters and that Norma has made suicide attempts. Later, Joe wants to leave the mansion but returns since Norma cuts her wrists. At nights, Joe sneaks out to work on a script with Betty Schaefer (Nancy Olson) and the two fall in love. • 13. Analysis Of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" speaks about the isolation of a person as a result of following a different life route than the other people around them. Billie Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day, reaches out to the many listeners that feel unaccepted for their wants, passions, and beliefs. His song goes through a sequence of examples encompassing the idea around following an empty road, where no one is there to understand his viewpoints and straying off a path that is "ideal" from society, or the people around him. Armstrong begins by setting a scene with an isolated road that leads to unknown places. He says, "I walk a lonely road," which was "The only one that I have ever known," implying that ever since he was born, he has always been an outcast for his thoughts or passions. His whole life sequence is represented by this on–going road that is so far away, and so different, from the people around him. He then transitions from describing the road that he has always been on, to paint a picture of a "Boulevard of Broken dreams, where the city sleeps." Armstrong is in this city, a place, stereotypically, that should always be "awake" and bright, that is sleeping while he is on a road, or boulevard of his broken dreams. The passions that he has and wants to pursue, his "dreams," are shut out from the rest of the society and his peers, who just sleep and ignore him while he walks alone with his broken and unaccepted dreams. Through his perspective, everyone around him can not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Vanity of Celebrity Fame: "Sunset Boulevard" and... A celebrity is not a person known for his/her talent or achievement, but an individual recognized for his/her reputation created by the media. The phase of stardom is slippery, and media may choose to represent celebrities varying from exaggerated admiration to mockery. The three texts chosen, movie "Sunset Boulevard", feature article "Over the Hilton" and television show "Celebrity Uncensored Six" are texts presenting different perception of celebrities than their usual images – either corrupted by the encircling media, overloads oneself with self–indulgence, or just mocks celebrity in a broad spectrum. Such media items empower and impresses the audience by perceiving celebrities as people who pay the price of privacy to gain well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Besides being at the brink of madness caused by her self–denial of the passing of her fame, Norma Desmond had also become rather sexual–transgressive. Some male traits shown in Norma consist of her dominance – she demands over Max, financial independence – owns factories which constantly makes profits and her assertive nature – she fearlessly confronts her passion for Joe. The way Norma is ridiculously insane to a degree of dark humour brings sympathy, entertainment and a corrupted depiction of celebrity to audiences. Starred by William Holden, the male protagonist, given one of the most mundane names, Joe Gillis, is a laconic character who interacts with Norma in a reciprocally dependent relationship. Without Gillis, Norma feels lifeless, loveless and powerless, she depends on him emotionally, and conversely, without Norma, Gillis is homeless, finance–less and jobless, he depends on her materialistically. Also, identical to Norma, Gillis is sexually transgressive as well. He possesses many feminine identities such as his betrayal of integrity – Joe and Norma swaps roles. He conforms to the reality where his scripts are rejected and adopt the easier role of being Norma Desmond's gigalo – weakness of character. In Gillis, audiences see a man who forfeited his personal happiness to gain money–oriented power over others – however, what he really gained is nothing, Norma nor her money can give him power. • 17. Sunset Boulevard Movie Essay Sunset Boulevard is a movie that needs no introduction, but to keep to proper essay format, I will give it one anyways. This 1950 classic is a staple in the book of Billy Wilder's film making genius. Directed and written in part by Wilder, this film not only utilized Billy's classic comedy–noir charm, but paired him with the incredible John Seitz, and Franz Waxman. William Holden and Gloria Swanson do a marvelous job at capturing the depth of their characters, and embody the style of everything that makes 50's Hollywood incredible. But the combination of the three aforementioned men make for a hard hitting behind the scenes team, one that near outshines the actors themselves. This being the only film that Wilder made which focused on film–making as a topic in its fictional story arc; he made a few key decisions which made this a great movie. Wilder chose to allow the setting to portray itself. While this may be an obvious choice for a movie about Hollywood, using real locations keeps the setting alive. Wilder also had many actors and directors portray themselves. This creates a very organic setting, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nominated for seven academy awards for his work in cinematography, and propelled by Wilder's film noir style, we see the excellent use of lighting and camera work that is almost lost on modern cinema. The more sinister characters are silhouetted, obscured by clouds of their own cigarette smoke, or viewed from a slightly upward angle, as to make them appear looming and threatening. The protagonist of our film is always well lit, shot from a level surface, and is often wholly visible in every frame he inhabits. Less serious and goofy characters often take up very small portions of the screen, and are shot on a downward angle, as if to make us literally look down upon them. As important as the use of angles with characters are, the score to the film is a character all its own. Franz Waxman is the mastermind behind this very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Response To Sunset Boulevard A Response to Sunset Boulevard (1950) A film noir is defined by Webster dictionary as: a type of movie about crime that uses dark shadows and lighting to show the complicated moral nature of the subject. Sunset Boulevard is an excellent example of this type of film due to the intense atmosphere, the suspenseful and melancholy background music that coordinates with the scenes, and also other things. The film is centered around one main idea: the characters tiptoeing around Norma Desmond's mental illness. Though Norma has been out of the acting career for 20 years, her biggest dream is to make a comeback. She still considers herself a star, and believes her way of redeeming herself is by writing a film and starring in it. However, after hiring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Sunset Boulevard Film Analysis Billy Wilder's famous and well known film called Sunset Boulevard is a masterpiece for the ages. Even though it is in black and white, don't think it isn't good. This film has so many twist and turns, the audience doesn't know what's going to happen next (even though you know the Writer in the movie is going to die because of the flash back). I thought the movie was interesting with the beginning of the film when they start out with the dead man floating motionless in the pool as police officers rush to the senses to understand what had happened to the dead movie writer. Also, later in the film that really interested me that was never answered in the film was the funeral for the dead ape and how it had anything to do with the plot of the movie. Sunset Boulevard is a film about a forgotten, living in her own world of being an old silent star crushed by new films with sound in her enormous mansion with just herself and her butler. As she just sits inside her house watching her old films, dreaming of her comeback and how it would bring her back as being the biggest star on hollywood. But the film isn't just a story about an unremembered famous actress, it's also a story about love, and this love theme helps makes the film seem more interesting instead of a boring movie about an old actress living in her glory days. Gloria Swanson plays the silent star trying to get back on top named Norma Desmond, with her role of a being a spoiled, innocent, and living in her dreams plays ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Sunset Boulevard Essay A fragment of life in Hollywood is being spread over the screen of the Music Hall in Sunset Boulevard. Utilizing as the premise of their forthcoming, burning dramatization a shameful circumstance including a blurred, maturing quiet screen star and a destitute, pessimistic youthful scriptwriter, Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder (with an aid from D. M. Marshman, Jr.) have composed an effective story of the aspirations and disappointments that join to make life in the cardboard city so entrancing to the outside world. Sunset Boulevard is in no way, shape or form an adjusted story of Hollywood, past or present. Be that as it may it is such a cunning compound of truth and legend–and is so lavishly fragrant of the past, yet so contemporaneous–that it apparently talks with extraordinary power. Sunset Boulevard is that uncommon mix of impactful composition, master acting, excellent course, and inconspicuously aesthetic photography which rapidly does magic over a crowd of people and holds it excited to a shattering peak. Gloria Swanson was persuaded out of long retirement to depict the woeful, overlooked film monarch, Norma Desmond, and now it can be said that it is endless that any other individual may have been considered for the part. As the rich, boastful relic urgently longing to hear again the approvals of the swarm, Miss Swanson commands the picture. Sunset Blvd. Essay The Thematic Intentions of Sunset Boulevard The film Sunset Boulevard directed by Billy Wilder and staring the main characters of Norma Desmond, Joe Gillis, and Max Von Mayerling is ideal example of how important film making techniques help depict a movie's core theme intentions with vivid clarity. Classic Hollywood is the first thing that comes to mind when one speaks about this film's style. This signature category combined with the visual style of realism and it's continuity editing; detailed mise–en–scene and all of its characteristics; and lastly the use of reoccurring motifs with formalistic qualities make the audience grasp the central theme of just how vicious the actual motion industry can be to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says, "...poor sucker, he always wanted a pool." This here is our first look at one of the motifs involving the idea of a dream. Throughout the movie that motif is seen in several different ways, this is just one of them. In almost all of the depictions this "dream" is some how linked with being shattered or simply not being what it's thought to be all. The jest of it is the fact that it does draw a parallel to extreme negativity and it also begins to show specifically how Wilder uses formality in parts of his direction. For this establishing scene the realism is viewed simply through the continuity editing that I have already touched on in some detail about the actual shots, angles, and camera movements involved here. This "invisible" style that is seen in so many Classic Hollywood films makes it seem like what is shown definitely could happen in real life. The only thing here that might not go hand in hand with that is the fact that this type of depiction was definitely not what the industry and the audience in their own reality was used to. Therefore, the superior thing about this fact is that because we know that it was not normal for its' time, it takes that central theme of industry decryption and makes it even more poignant by itself and especially to the people that first saw this ... Sunset Boulevard Film Vs Hollywood Film, also called a movie or a motion picture, is a form of art of simulating experiences to communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings by the means of moving images along with other sensory stimulations such as sound effect and background music. Most of the films express their main ideas through a fictional plot in a fictional setting. For example, Thor: Ragnarok, a 2017 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, takes the audience through Thor's storyline and brings out the themes of personal growth and heroism. Directed by Billy Wilder an Austrian born, American filmmaker of sixty films. The movie is almost 67 years old and when it was first released the movie was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, ranked number twelve on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 best American films in 1998, and worshipped by many critics. Sunset Boulevard Essay Sunset Boulevard (Wilder 1950) explores the intermingling of public and private realms, puncturing the illusion of the former and unveiling the grim and often disturbing reality of the latter. By delving into the personal delusions of its characters and showing the devastation caused by disrupting those fantasies, the film provides not only a commentary on the industry of which it is a product but also a shared anxiety about the corrupting influence of external perception. Narrated by a dead man, centering on a recluse tortured by her own former stardom, and concerning a once–promising director who refuses to believe his greatest star could ever be forgotten, the work dissects a multitude of illusory folds to reveal an ultimately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Norma asserts her self–worth, she does so surrounded by images of herself. "I am big," she proclaims, with a thousand Norma Desmonds staring back at the camera from photographs, posters, and artistic renditions of the once famous face. "It's the pictures that got small." This convolution of reality, a reversal that gives Desmond the illusion of both control and continued adoration by nonexistent fans, provides the foundation for all her more severe misperceptions. As long as it is the cinema itself that has lost its appeal and not the former silent film star, a change of fates or Desmond's own gracious compromise have the potential to restore her former glory. As she ultimately confesses, Norma feels that she left the spotlight (not the other way around) and that it has been waiting for her ever since. A belief that her seclusion is voluntary allows Desmond to avoid the finality of her fall from grace. The relationship between Joe Gillis and Norma Desmond also holds close corporeal ties to the protagonist's material wealth and visual relationship with Desmond's mansion. Joe's car, the symbol of masculinity and independence, embodies the man's desperation and his initial motivations for accepting a job with Norma. As a social worker, one could possibly visit several different neighborhoods in a single week. Because of the vast variety of clients that a social worker may encounter, cultural competency and sensitivity is an important concept in this field of work. According to Garthwait (2016), a social worker "must be capable of recognizing, respecting, and accommodating differences while treating all clients with fairness and equality under the law" (p.110). The capability to understand a client's culture, values, perspective, and life experiences is crucial in determining which services will best suit the individual. Every client is unique and needs to be treated as such. Thus becoming familiar with a community, a social worker can better assist clients with their needs. During Community Immersion, each group was assigned a community in which they were to assess. One of the communities visited was the city of Santa Monica. Santa Monica is encompassed in 8.42 square miles (Census Bureau). Its borders are the Pacific Ocean to the west, Centinela Avenue to the east, San Vicente Boulevard to the north, and Dewey Street to the south, as seen in Figure 1. The film still captures the heart and mind of audiences that watch it today with its very dramatic characters and scenes. This film demonstrates a variety of themes and concepts through the choices of cinematography. Sunset Boulevard shows the dark side of celebrities and the flaws or downfall of becoming famous. Some main components of the cinematography in this film include the placement of lighting, the portrayal of specific scenes and their symbolism, the music choices, camera angles, and the camera position. This film is black and white but still contains many dark scenes that really capture the audience's attention and give a suspenseful and depressing vibe. Norma Desmond is a washed–up movie star who only acted in silent films. But, in Sunset Boulevard, silent films were outdated and Norma became outdated with them. The silent film business was completely finished and films with talking began to get popular. She lived in a mansion with her butler Max, who ironically was her ex–husband. Whenever Norma's mansion is shown in the film it is very dark, messy, and broken. When looked at, the main character Joe Gillis, portrayed by William Holden, can be seen as an anti–hero. Joe shows his anti–heroic behavior in many ways. For example, he is dishonest, he uses the people around him, and he also is only focused on elevating himself. One of the many examples of the dishonesty of Joe. One of the most notable examples of his is when he meets Norma Desmond, portrayed by Gloria Swanson. He starts out being noble by telling her that she should rethink let him look over the script, however, he quickly becomes crooked. He tells her falsehoods to try and extort money out of her. This transforms into him taking advantage of the situation. He starts by taking advantage of Norma as the movie continues. The Movie ' Sunset Boulevard ' The film Sunset Boulevard (1950), directed by Billy Wilder, Norma Desmond exemplified a Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) by being demanding, intense and unstable. These behaviors that are consistent with the elements of abnormality include suffering, social discomfort, dangerousness, and irrationality and unpredictability. The first element that is consistent with Norma Desmond's character is suffering. Desmond being one of the greatest movie stars in history suffers as she experiences the fall from stardom. Fourth element is irrationality and unpredictability as stress–related and paranoia leads to irrational thinking. In the very last scenes of the film, an unpredictable event occurs when Desmond kills Gillas, and all of a sudden she then quickly hurries upstairs to prepare for a movie set while being surrounded by the reporters and police officers. More importantly, with the case of Desmond, the people around her feed her false belief because everyone is aware that she no longer is herself, which leads to Desmond securing herself permanently into her fabricated world, then eventually led to her demise. The film then ends as Desmond experiences the most unpredictable and irrational behavior. The causal models that best represent Norma Desmond's Borderline Personality Disorder abnormality would be the Biological, Sociocultural, and Cognitive–Behavioral model. Firstly, the biological model helps to determine the causal factors as research suggests that genetics play a significant role in BPD as the text supports, "people with BPD often appear to be characterized by lowered functioning of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is involved in inhibiting behavioral responses" (344). Generally, genetics are a main aspect to BPD, however other models help to identify Desmond's abnormality such as the sociocultural model, which helps to determine further explanations on how the potential impact ... • 53. Sunset Boulevard Film Analysis Film noirs describe pessimistic films associated with black and white visual styles, crime fiction, and dark themes. Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 film noir directed by Billy Wilder. Sunset Boulevard presents many themes that are common with the genre film noir, but also introduces some differences from the typical movie in that genre. The main similarity in Sunset Boulevard and a typical film noir movie is that it was very melodramatic and over the top. Many film noir films have very dramatic storylines and characters. Whenever something sudden and striking would happen, the director would zoom in on the characters face in a very melodramatic manner. The girl in the film, Norma, is very over the top whenever anything bad happens to her. When the main character, William, is about to leave she threatens to kill herself and at one point even cuts her wrists screaming and crying that she "would do it again." A lot of times Norma talks to herself in a very dramatic manner including after she slaps William in the face and storms off. William's whole death is melodramatic in the fact that she only shot him because he was leaving her and she would rather he not be alive if he's not going to be with her. Her psychotic break at the end of the movie is not out of nowhere, but is still flung on you out of the blue in a very sudden, melodramatic sense. The music is common with dramatic movies with the almost stereotypical, "dun, dun, duns" in the soundtrack whenever something serious and unexpected happens. Things move very quickly in this movie as well as other film noir films. For example, he moves in with a woman he hardly knows, she falls in love with him almost instantly, and he almost kisses an engaged woman the second time he meets her. This fast pace, melodramatic theme is common in all film noir movies, especially in Sunset Boulevard. The plot of Sunset Boulevard shares common aspects with many other film noir movies. The whole plot of the movie is told by a dead man, William, which is a common theme of film noirs. Especially taking in the facts that the whole story was one long flashback. So going along with thatI asked around at couple place to learn about how music influences personality and internal motions; one person was sitting at store that had a music that was playing Indian music, it seemed like he was enjoying it so I asked for the reason. I learned that his personality was self reserved and curious. His taste was not Indian music it self but the fact that they are playing it rather loudly and how they are not shamed for this different type of music. He told me that it is incredible how the new age moved on and that he can enjoyed culture difference in a lot of areas, it sparked the curiosity in his inner self. The Film Industry, Hollywood And The Movie Industry Movie Industry/Hollywood Hollywoodland, known as the most recognizable film industry in the world from the 1920's to now, slowly went from black and white silent movies to colorful motion pictures in the screens. Hollywood became an overnight success during the 1920's by making improvements in the film and motion picture industry. Some symbols of fame were developed as Hollywood kept growing along the way in the 1920's such as the Hollywood sign and the Walk of Fame. The Hollywood sign had a big meaning behind it. Later on in her life she decided to commit suicide due to personal issues and got a memorial stone done after, that declared her the "First Movie Star". According to Christopher Klein, author of "Florence Lawrence: The First Movie Star," an article published on A+E Networks' HISTORY STORIES, the actress did more than just acting. She was known for inventing signaling devices for cars in 1914. One of these devices worked as cars' turning signals, moving a flag up or down depending on the direction of the turn. The other known device was a stop sign that would pop up whenever the brake pedal was pushed. Even though the actress was a clever inventor, she never applied for a patent for her creations, and therefore, she never received remuneration. Which is a widely desired car that even the studios wanted to use it in a movie. The car represents how as time goes by nonliving items gain value and people like Norma loose value to others like how the directors don't want to have old actors in new movies but want old cars in new movies. A symbol in the movie is the implicit and explicit pictures of Gloria Swanson in her younger days as an actress in real life. The symbol is that Norma can not get over her past accomplishments to live in the present day. Her glorifications in life is only of her movies now that she is out off the business, the pictures are only there to remind her of those days and retrospect make her feel less good about herself as a person and actress. She still thinks people remember her by sending her fan mail but in turn that is only her butler max sending her them so she has something to be happy about. The third symbol is the graves, which represent her second and third husbands which like joe had enough of her crazy obsession with her past and wanted to leave but they were the only ones to keep her happy so she killed them when they threated to leave her so they could always be with her. Joe noticed them in the beginning in the movie with a empty grave beside them unknown to Joe that that grave as for the monkey at the time but in a few short months when he would want to leave her a grave for him would be prepared for him as ... Case Analysis : Hayes Valley Hayes Valley is currently known for having tons of new and hip boutiques, restaurants, bars and has been recently one of San Francisco's hotspots for art installations. Situated about three blocks away from Civic Center and about four blocks from Market, Hayes Valley offers a quiet escape for local San Franciscans who want to splurge on fine dining and clothing in contrast to other commercial parts of San Francisco filled with tourist. By no means is Hayes Valley's commercial neighborhood only for locals, it attracts tons of tourist day by day, but in comparison to most of the other neighborhoods in the city, Hayes Valley is a modest destination t that has gone through a drastic change in the last two decades. Believe it or not, the neighborhood was once vacation destination for San Franciscans, since the neighborhood was just outside the city limits (Schwartz). Colonel Thomas Hayes, a county clerk in a time when James Van Ness was Mayor of San Francisco, came to acquire a land grant of 160 acres west of Van Ness Avenue, starting in Divisadero, and bordering, Haight, Market and Turk streets. (Schwartz). If this were acquired during modern times, where value of the neighborhood is currently, Hayes would have been filthy rich. During the old days, San Francisco wasn 't as commuter friendly as we see it today. Getting across town or even a couple miles out of the city was dreadful. • 67. A Comparison Of The Film Mulholland Dr. Sunset Boulevard was one of the first films to cover the gray area between glory and the fall of a celebrity, but not the only one. Borrowing many plot points from this film, a lesser known 2001 neo–noir movie Mulholland Dr. tells the story of a young starlet named Diane (or Betty, in Diane's dream) who orders the killing of her girlfriend Camilla (or Rita), who got the role Diane auditioned for. After a series of dreams and illusions, crushed by the weight of truth and guilt, Diane takes her own life in her apartment. There are many similarities shared between the two films as both Norma and Diane suffer from mental health conditions and could not wake up from the illusion induced by the mental disorder (Diane committed suicide as soon as she came back to reality). Their fantasies about themselves and the film industry were not an imagined scenario that represents the realization of their impossible desires, since their wish to enter (or re–enter) the industry was not totally impossible; but rather, the fantasy allows them to desire.6 Norma's fantasy of still being wanted by the industry leads to her going to Cecil B. DeMille's studio in real–life, wanting to work with him again to produce her film Salomé. A better illustration of this idea is Diane's fantasy with her failed audition, in which she found closure. In her dream, a Cowboy talked to the director of the film she was auditioning for, telling him that "the rest of the cast can stay, that's up to you. But the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Visit Of The Mcdonald 's On Okeechobee Boulevard For this assignment I chose to visit the McDonald's on Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach and the Chick–Fil–A on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard in West Palm Beach. I visited McDonald's first just after what could be considered the dinner rush. When walking into the store the first thing I noticed was the floor was fairly dirty, especially near the trash receptacles. There were clearly visible items of food that had fallen off of people's trays as they attempted to clear their trays off. I got into the line to order and noticed that there were three people ahead of me. There was only one McDonald's employee working the registers while I saw another standing by on their cell phone. I believe the second employee not working the registers was a manager. She was unaware of the line that had grown and when she looked up she signed into a register to help. I had gone into the store with the intention of only ordering a sweet tea, but if I were to have been offered an item I would buy it. I gave my order to the manager of only a sweet tea and she gave me my total. It was interesting to see that the manager did not try to upsell my order as I was only getting a $1 drink. As the drinks were a self–service, I went to go get the sweet tea and found they were out of sweet tea. I informed the manager and she said they would get another one out. Rather than get a different drink I decided to wait to see how long it would take the staff to replace the sweet tea. Once the manager told ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

DAVE: You don't know that. ROBERT: Well, I can assume. This is a poor neighborhood. DAVE: Don't you think that that is a bit of a rash decision? Just because someone is poor doesn't mean that they commit crime. A lot of the problems that we have here in society are because of the social dichotomy in the United States. Look, we just drove through Beverly Hills, past the Pretty Woman hotel, and have now entered a poorer neighborhood within 15 minutes. The rich and the poor live right next to one another. Unfortunately, with the way that society has pushed down the poor in this country, these people that are driving by will most likely never be able to move up the social totem pole. The quality of education that these people have is lower than the general society, they do not have access to quality health care for themselves or their children, and look, I don't happen to see much food stores or quality restaurants. Instead, I see a lot of fast food chains – look, there are three at that intersection DAVE points and ROBERT looks.

Sunset Boulevard Themes Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950) is a uniquely crafted film that provides analytical insight, as well critical underlying themes that focus on the very industry it was born from. The film itself is a commentary of an evolving 1950's Hollywood, that used a sense of realism and irony not seen by other films of its time (TCM). These themes are displayed practically flawlessly through clever and entertaining use of of narration elements, motifs, and whimsical humor. From the very first scene, the viewer's attention is grasped by a brilliant and engaging scene of foreshadowing. Their names were Charles Brackett and I.A.L. Diamond. Wilder and bracket co–wrote many of Wilder's films including Sunset Boulevard. When speaking on his inspiration for the film in an interview with Vanity Fair, he cited that, "I wanted to make things a little harder for myself, I wanted to do that thing which never quite works–a picture about Hollywood" (Vanity Fair). At first Wilder and Bracket wanted to make the film a comedy and envisioned the film as a celebrated comeback of a has–been silent film queen (Wilder, B). Though the two eventually choose a semi–darker path for the film revolving around the plot we know today and its suggestive commentary on the industry. In fear of censorship from the Paramount studios, Wilder and Brackett made a phony working title for the film to throw off any overseers, accordingly titled, A Can of Beans. In the film Wilder strived to give an accurate and realistic portrayal of what he believed to be 1950's Hollywood. Though this venture was an entirely different experience for Wilder, for he was not just writing another scrip. He was writing about an industry of which he worked and lived in.
