1. The British viceroy Lord Curzon divided the province of Bengal in July 1905 into the provinces of East Bengal and West Bengal. 2. The partition was done to better manage the large Bengal province, as Muslims were a minority in united Bengal and their rights were being deprived. It also separated the Oriya speaking areas from Bengal. 3. The partition scheme met with opposition from Hindus, as it empowered the Muslim majority in East Bengal and affected Hindu lawyers and press. The All India National Congress protested the partition through civil disobedience campaigns across India. In 1911, the partition was annulled as decided at the Delhi Durbar.
