1. Genre
Genre is the type or category of media text. It is
the classification of media text into groups with
similar characteristics.
2. Different Genres
There are a lot of magazines available in the UK that are different genres.
These are the top 10 selling in the UK:
1: Q (Rock)
158,271
2: Mojo (Classic
Rock)
121,746 (1.0%)
3: The Fly (Indie)
109,734 (1.5%)
4: Uncut
(Britpop)
88,756 (-19.4%)
5: Kerrang!
(Rock/Metal)
80,186 (5.3%)
6: New Musical
Express (Indie)
74,206 (-3.4%)
7: Classic Rock
(Classic Rock)
56,037 (12.0%)
8: Metal Hammer
(Heavy Metal)
45,359 (3.0%)
9: Mixmag
(Electronic/Dance)
41,757 (-1.1%)
10: Word (Electronic)
35,142 (1.1%)
Other magazines of different
genres are available in the market
but these are the top selling in the
UK. Rock and sub-genres feature
heavily in amongst the top selling
as well as electronic. I have
realised most magazines have a
specialist genre but then branch
out into others.

3. My Interest
The 3 main genres that interest me are rock, indie and electronic.
Rock:
Rock is one of the most
popular genres in the
world of music. Despite
fewer young people being
interested in rock music it
is still regarded as the
biggest genre. Rock is
also extremely diverse
and has many subgenres so I could look at
making a magazine in
one of those. There is
however a lot of
competition that exists in
the market that sell
extremely well.
Indie:
Indie is an increasingly
popular genre especially
amongst the younger
people. It was regarded
as a sub-genre of rock
but can now describe
electronic and rap music
for example. It does
seem to be a small
genre because of the
name but it is incredibly
diverse and lots of music
could fall under it. There
are 2 popular magazines
on the market so this is
something I would need
to consider.
Electronic:
Electronic music is
considered a fairly new
genre but in recent years
it has grown in popularity.
Many pop songs have
electronic backing music
these days. It is
increasingly popular with
younger. Electronic music
has a lot of sub-genres
depending on lots of
factors, it is perhaps too
diverse as a lot of people
like some electronic
music but not others so
the genre will have to be
more specific.
4. My Genre
I am going to be making my magazine based around the genre of Indie
Rock. Indie Rock is the largest sub-genre of indie music and is popular with
many rock fans. It is a genre I listen to and am incredibly interested in, I
regularly read magazines that include indie rock such as Q and NME which I
believe will help me create a successful magazine. I am now going to look at
the existing magazines:
The Fly:
NME:
The Fly are the number 1 new music
NME is a weekly magazine and is more
