would get there was around South America. In many instances when there was problems on the west or east coast that needed naval intervention it
took a significant amount of time for the navy to reinforce them. This could end up being a serious problem for the United States if there was any large

a way to connect the two seas so that it could help them to reduce the time necessary to get from one coast to another and so that other ships could get

During the1890s, the United States showed little interest in foreign affairs. The U.S. relied on previous foreign policies which resulted in inconsistent
international trade in the years leading up to the twentieth century. However, following the rise of the industrial revolution in the United States
American business began to recognize the vast potential of the international market place. The U.S. sought out to expand its territory globally to
increase trade and protect its assets more effectively. TheUnited States, at this point in the late 1890s, also began to listen to Alfred Thayer Mahan, an
admiral and naval strategist. Mahan had previously called for a strengthening of the U.S. navy and an expansion of U.S. markets globally. Mahan
also had great influence over his friend and current assistant secretary of the navy Teddy Roosevelt. In 1898 the U.S. was able to exploit a huge
mistake made by the Spanish empire in Havana Harbor. The American ship U.S.S. Maine mysteriously exploded on February 15, 1898, killing 266
American sailors. The American public was outraged and they called for war to overthrow the "Spanish Murders" in Cuba. At this time, Spain was an
imperial power with land possessions in the Caribbean as well as the pacific. They controlled Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and the

The unit was officially named the first United States volunteer cavalry, but after many disreguarded nicknames, they eventually became known as
"Roosevelt's Rough Riders." The volunteers that formed the rough riders came from four states, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.

Amistad is a film that provides a learning and historical experience about the horrific experiences of slaves in transport from Cuba. The movie
fictionally provides a portrayal of events in 1839 that surround the successful revolt by a group of captured Africans headed to the Americas for slavery
aboard a ship. The abducted Mende tribesmen stage a bloody revolt and take over control the ship (Osagie, 2003). This happens off the coast of Cuba.
However, the Africans are tricked by the crew members into believing that they are sailing back to Africa, all the while moving along the U.S Eastern
Seaboard. Two months into the journey, with little water and food, they get captured near Connecticut by a U.S Navy ship. Then an international legal
battle begins that is final resolved in 1841 by the United States Supreme Court.

There are numerous arguments for, and against the Department. Some experts say the Military is too large in peacetime. Some say that it is not big

The U.S. Marine Corps' is thought to be one of the five free standing military departments, but in all actuality there is only three departments. The U.S.
Army, U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Navy are the only branches of the military that are correctly recognized as their own departments. There are two
other Branches of the military that are under the U.S. Navy, one is the United States Marine Corps'. They were created to protect, but now they need

There is the Infantry that has been nicknamed the Grunts of the Marine Corps'. The Corps' contains jobs from mechanics to recruiters, from
Combat to desk top jobs, but unlike some Branches of the Military all of the Marines go through the same boot camps. The Marine Corps has a
twelve week required boot camp. When the New Marines, also known as Pullies, first arrive to either Paris Island or Sand Francisco, they have one
scripted phone call to allow their families to know that they made it safely. For the first two weeks the new Pullie, cannot have outside
communications to family or friends. When those two weeks are up they are then aloud to send letters, but they have to earn the credits to purchase
the stamps and such needed. At the end of the eleventh week the Pullies go through what is called Hell Week, where they are not allowed to sleep for
two days and nights, and still much preform at maxim compasity. When they are finished with their boot camp training they are allowed to see their
family for a short amount of time before they graduate. After their graduation they have a ten day leave before they have to eather be deployed or
continue on to a Marine Occupations Specialty School, MOS school.

Throughout the history of Naval Aviation, one can see a growing force. As new technology and innovations arose and advanced, Naval Aviation
improved as well. In times of war and peace, through training and dedication, naval aviators improved their abilities and tactics to produce the fighting
force it is today. If by chance, the "revolt of the admirals" had failed, the United States Military would not be what it is today and the Navy could not

New air stations opened, training programs began at the new Naval Air Stations, colleges and universities, and with the private industry. Many types of
aircraft were produced and an aircraft engine was advanced from a trial product to mass production and operation.
The flying boat, in 1919, was the first aircraft to fly the Atlantic Ocean. This aircraft was Naval Aviation's outstanding technical product of World War
I. Many aviators were impressed with the flying boat and urged that it would be the means to take airpower to sea. However, other officers believed

February 15, 1898 The events of today have been frightening for me and many other Americans as tragedy has struck in Havana harbor,Cuba. The USS
Maine has exploded and been sunk by unknown and terrifying causes, killing 266 American officers and crew while injuring many others. I as well
as most Americans assume this is the dirty work of the Spanish as revenge against the many American owned sugar plantations. Towards the end of
1897, General Fitzhugh Lee saw a rising concern for the safety of American citizens in Cuba and therefore requested help from the U.S Navy. The
