Demons. Simply the name of these soulless creatures brings an unsettling feeling that makes most
people cringe in fear. For Clarissa Fray, otherwise known as Clary, it is the very name of these

Similar to a community, everything has to be flawless in order for a book to thrive. Cassandra Clare,
author of The Mortal Instruments, does an astounding job on carefully weaving together all the
strands of a perfect novel and creating an immaculate story for teens. For me, the most exciting part
about reading City of Bones was the completely unexpected plot drops. From finding out that Jace is
actually her older brother, to finding out Valentine is her biological father, City of Bones brings a
sense of thrill while turning every page. Some stories in the past that I haven't enjoyed as much such
as After the First Death by Robert Cormier also include plot twists, however aren't as engrossing or

How St. Francis of Assissi and St. Clare Influenced My Faith
Catholicism has always been an integral part of my life. I can remember from very early on standing
in church and being overcome by the slender of the church and also the mass itself. As I grew up my
love for Christ only became greater however my perception of God changed greatly. When I was
younger I saw God as someone to be feared and obeyed, However as I matured I discovered that
God wasn't someone to be feared, but rather God was someone to love. Through this change in
perceptions I began to see God as more of a friend and role model, someone I could talk to
whenever I was in trouble, lonely or in some cases just wanted to share life events. Through this
class I have grown even closer to God. Seeing the devotion and love Saint Francis and Clare had for

For much of human existence, the concepts of fate and free will have been explored as conflicting
explanations for the lives we lead. In Genesis, our mortal suffering and the enmity between people
are portrayed to be the consequences for that original expression of self–determination, when Adam
and Eve chose to defy God and consume the forbidden fruit. However, the Lord's Prayer, as
commonly recited in Christianity, states that "[God's] will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven,"
expressing the sentiment that our own desires ultimately cannot act against God's plans. This
contradiction is further examined as a major element in Thomas Hardy's novel, Tess of the
d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented. Beginning with the immediate introduction of
the Durbeyfield's ancestry through Parson Tringham's offhand remark, Hardy strings together
otherwise insignificant occurrences, which hold great power not only over the actions of his
protagonist, Tess Durbeyfield, but other characters as well. Despite the differences between her
lovers, Alec d'Urberville and Angel Clare, in their upbringings, they are both influenced by the male
ego and society to oppress Tess, and as their journeys intertwine as they find themselves, the
juxtaposition of the two men reveals the inevitability of the tragic fate they drive her towards.

Life is like dominoes, everything happens to set something else in motion. City of bones was written
by Cassandra Clare and it's about Clary Fray, a girl who's life was changed forever. One night in

Themes And Symbolism In City Of Bones And City Of Glass
In the first book of the Mortal Instrument series, City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, the main
character, Clary, discovers that she's apart of this mythological world after her mother went missing.
Along the way, Clary has to find her true potential of who she's destined to be, to save her mother,
and possibly the whole mythological world itself. Moving on to the third book of the Mortal
Instrument series, City of Glass (also by Cassandra Clare), the same main character, Clary, goes to a
country illegally to save her mother after she finds her. While that happens, her brother Jace try to
hold in their true feelings of love with each other, when their father strives to take over all of
Nephilim, (a race of people in the mythological world). Both of these texts interweave in different
themes such as "love", symbolism that supports the theme, and various of different author's craft
moves to show significance. Not to mention, the differences between those themes, symbols, and
author's craft moves that can lead to different outcomes, but still have the same meanings/goals, as
well as overall character development.
In both City of Bones and City of Glass, there are important symbols the two texts show in order to
develop and support major themes throughout the texts. In City of Glass, the main symbol of the
book is the Morgenstern ring, (which is a family ring that gets passed down from generation to
generation in the Morgenstern family). The Morgenstern ring symbolizes the overall emotion of
love. A place where this symbol shows significance, is when Clary finds out the truth about Jace,
that he's not really her brother. "They stood there motionless not saying a word; slowly Clary took
off the ring." Page 489. This shows how this ring symbolizes love because she took the ring off
when she found out that Jace wasn't really her brother after all, and the only reason why she wore it
in the first place was for Jace to make her motivated as a character. Moving on to City of Bones, one
important symbol the text explains is a raven. The raven can symbolize many different things such
as intelligence or wisdom, however, the main idea the raven symbolizes is also the emotion of love.

An Alcoholics Anonymous Group Meeting At St. Clare Hospital
From 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 4, 2015, I attended an Alcoholics Anonymous group
meeting at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, Wisconsin. It was the Area 75 Conference of the "Friends
of Bill Group". It was a truly sobering and enlightening experience and it made me appreciate my
own life much more. This is especially true after a talk I had with a member of the group who asked
to remain anonymous, suffice it to say that his story was a very tragic one. I would like to report on
my general reaction and afterthoughts to the meeting, but I think it would appropriate to recount the
member's story first. I talked to the man, who asked to go by "Richard", after the meeting
concluded. We sat outside the conference room and drank coffee while he told me about his lifelong
battle with alcohol and drugs. I think what struck out the most to me was just how sad and regretful
his tone of voice was as he told his story to me. He recalled how he first shot up with heroin at the
age of fourteen, and how his life was a vicious cycle of drugs and depression afterwards. "Richard"
told me that he was in and out of juvenile halls throughout his teenage years and how, when he was
supposed to be in school, would skip classes to drink on the curb or inject himself with heroin in
some dirty gas station bathroom. "I was in and out of prisons too, once I got old enough." I

Like the founding fathers, he's a great thinker, a believer in ideals,

After this sexual violation and corruption of innocence, Tess flees home. Although she has escaped
the trap of the sexually rapacious Alec for the time being, her circumstance is similar to that of a

describes the melancholy emotions that plague him. Pope gives readers of Studying English
Literature and Language a bit of context for Clare's poem. Clare was characterized as a 'peasant
poet,' making his road to fame difficult. Perhaps the most prominent information provided was that
Clare admitted to an asylum, not just once, twice during his life of seventy–one years. With this
information, it is assumable that John Clare was not mentally healthy. "I am" was actually written
during Clare's second institutionalization in an asylum, Northampton General Lunatic Asylum, that
lasted from 1841 until the end of his life in 1866.
In the first stanza of "I am," Clare explains the source of his sadness. He says that no one cares or
knows of him, showing his feelings of alienation. He goes on to say that his "friends forsake" him,
using an alliteration to draw the readers' attention. Without companions by his side, the estranged
writer tells that he has to shoulder his burdens alone without outside comfort. In these lines, the poet

This week i read the book, City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare. It is a fantasy novel that is 485 pages
long. I chose to read this book because it looked interesting and this author writes some really good
books.
This book takes place in mainly New York City and in 2008 but it doesn't give a specific place. This
setting makes it seem more realistic than what it would with a different time and place. The story is
about fighting demons and it makes a lot of sense with this type of setting.

For me, it also creates a calming effect with the over–all atmosphere of the poem; although the
narrator is tormented and suffering, they still appear calm, as though reaching this decision of not
wanting to live any more is almost freeing them; like making the final move towards 'Heaven' will
be good for them. It is in line 12 that I found another interesting use of written pause, with–
"Are strange – nay, rather, stranger than the rest."
–This creates a very conversational tone, and gives us the impression that they are confiding with us,
or maybe talking to themselves and that we are listening in on something personal, the way they
correct themselves half way through a sentence/ line. It also draws us back to the feeling of total
honesty, as they are not perfecting their speech, just saying how they feel at that moment. I found I
Am to be fairly modern in comparison to other Romantic works of that era, and I believe the reason
behind this is that Clare doesn't limit himself and his work here by keeping strictly to certain
methods of rhyme or line endings; for example the first stanza is 6 lines worth of alternating
couplets, one couplet of which doesn't even completely rhyme in terms of sound; 'lost' (end of line
2) and 'host' (end of line 4). This is more consonance than rhyme. The other two stanzas then go on
in a 'Venus and Adonis' style with line endings

Introduction Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was a novel written in times of unrest
where slavery was a controversial topic and women 's rights were still suffering. Uncle Tom's Cabin
showed the grim reality of slavery and showed the importance for women to gain a societal role
beyond the domestic domain. The reading contains a number of major characters throughout the
novel. The two most notable characters we will discuss is Mrs. Shelby and Marie St. Clare.
Throughout this paper we will compare and contrast these two characters and give specific examples
to illustrate the similarities and differences between these two unique individuals. The first character
we will discuss is Emily Shelby who is the wife of Arthur Shelby who is a Kentucky Plantation
owner and the owner of Uncle Tom. Mrs. Shelby is a kind, loving, and Christian woman who is
strongly opposed to slavery and takes it upon herself to treat them with most respect. Mrs. Shelby
from a spiritual standpoint cares about her slaves relationship with God and teaches his word to
them. Mr. Shelby and Mrs. Shelby treat the slaves with kindness but differ significantly in regards to

I have been a bookworm ever since I can remember, and even before I knew how to read, my
parents read stories to me around the clock; I was reading picture books before pre–k. I have always
loved reading because my parents loved it, and I wanted them to always be proud of me. It did form
into a habit of my own, though, and through this habit, I found myself. Being a bookworm has been
one of my many labels since day one, and I would not have it any other way because reading and
writing has constructed me into the person I am today by teaching me life lessons, expanding my
mind to new concepts, and affecting my social life in surprising ways. Likewise, even through the
simpler books I read as a child, I was able to learn many important life lessons. In grade school, I
was reading 4–5 books a week. Junie B. Jones, The Magic Treehouse, Inkheart, and Song of the
Sparrow all still hold a special place in my heart. Junie B. made me feel that I could do anything I
set my mind to because of her rebellious nature and taught me to try to make the best of every bad
situation. The Magic Treehouse taught me that I could go anywhere or be anything if I believed I
could, and, through this lesson, I learned to believe I could. Inkheart set in me an appreciation for
human imagination and for all the evil that is in this world because every good story has to have an
antagonist. Lastly, Song of the Sparrow taught me that people are mean, and love is not kind. It
taught me that war and love are as complex as the other, and both have the same outcome...
Someone gets hurt. Out of them all, Song of the Sparrow, which I did not fully understand as a
child, taught me my most valuable lesson, and I will never forget it. In addition, just like most of the
children born in the Bible Belt, I was raised on a variety of Bible stories because my parents wanted
nothing more than to raise a moral, daughter of God, but the Bible wasn't the only book that has
helped me shape my morals as a person. The Mortal Instruments, a wonderful teen–fiction series by
Cassandra Clare, was one of those books that made me question everything I believed. There was
teen sex, gay relationships, murder, and a lot of talk about there not being a god featured in
