Lateral Thinking - Theory
The brain is not intended for creative thinking
The brains power is in forming patterns
and sticking to these patterns
SO
To become creative you need to block
normal channels and âcut across patterns
in a self-organizing information systemâ
4. Explaining lateral thinking
Mind is like mud â grooves are formed where water/thoughts run. Need to
form new avenues
âDiscovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking
something differentâ Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Nobel Prize Winner
5. Lateral Thinking - steps
1. Select and Define â in this step, the objectives are stated and the focus is
established
2. Generate Ideas â in this step, lateral thinking provides a set of tools and
techniques to generate several ideas
3. Capture and Work with output â in this step, the ideas generated are
evaluated and the best ones are selected/refined
4. Deploy â develop and implement an action plan
6. SEQUENCE IS NOT FIXED, BUT OFTEN IT IS:
1 WHITE â INFO
2 GREEN â IDEAS
3YELLOW â BENEFITS OF IDEAS
4 BLACK â EVALUATION
5 RED â FEELINGS
6 BLUE - CONCLUSIONS
7. The Random Word
The most simple lateral thinking technique
Uses a randomly selected NOUN to stimulate thought about new patterns
The word must be RANDOM to force the new patterns
The mind will take the random word and create a new pattern
8. RANDOM WORDS
1. rocket, crib, taxi, doorknob, tongue
2. frog, ice, solvent, brake, bat
3. Cloud, hose, butterfly, paint, thunder
4. Slide, silicone, wave, lemon, button
5. Song, toilet, peanut, hill, venom
9. Alternative
What is an Alternative?
âŚWhen searching for an solution, we come up with an idea
âŚThere may be another idea that can also accomplish the same result -
alternative
âŚExample situation â quench thirst
âŚwater ď°
âŚalternatives : milk, coffee, tea, wine, beer, soda
10. Provocation
Most of the times, when a statement is made there is a previous reason for
saying it
Gravity pulls objects downward
A provocation is something that is said without having a good reason for
saying it, the reason is generated afterwards
Planes can land upside down!
11. The creative challenge
It is based on the belief that the present way of doing things does not have to be
the best, it is just one way to do things
It is based on examining the way things are done now, on what we take as given,
what are assumptions
WHAT IF WE TRY THIS
