2. Basic Of Reverse Circulation
RC drilling uses rods with inner and outer
tubes, the drill cuttings are returned to
surface inside the rods. The drilling
mechanism is a pneumatic reciprocating
piston known as a hammer driving a tungstensteel drill bit.
RC drilling ideally produces dry rock chips, as
large air compressors dry the rock out ahead
of the advancing drill bit.
3. Contd.
Reverse circulation is achieved by blowing air
down the annulus of the rod, the differential
pressure creating air lift of the water and cuttings
up the inner tube which is inside each rod. It
reaches the deflector box at the top of the drill
string then moves through a sample hose which
is attached to the top of the cyclone
The drill cuttings travel around the inside of the
cyclone until they fall through an opening at the
bottom and are collected in a sample bag.
4. Reverse Circulation Type
Reverse Circulation Drilling Center Sampling
with special Center Sample Hammer.
Conventional Down Hole Hammer
5. Centre Sampling
This is the newer of the two methods.
This method uses a special Center Sample
Hammer with a hollow center that allows
the sample into the dual wall drill pipe
right at the face of the drill bit.
The advantage of the Center Sample
Hammer is the sample goes immediately
into the drill pipe without having to travel
up the side of the conventional hammer
and into the interchange (aprox 4 feet).
6. Conventional Sampling
This is the original RC with a conventional
Down Hole Hammer and a 'Interchange'
(adaptor just above the hammer with a
vertical slot to let the sample into the center
of the Dual wall drill pipe.
The conventional reverse circulation system
works very well usually producing more
footage in a day than the Center Sample
system therefore the price is a little lower
per meter.
The hole sizes available in this style range
from 3 1/2" up to 24".
7. Application
Coal Mining
Mineral and Energy Exploration
Extraction of Ores.
Engineering and Environmental application
Investigation and grade control
Cementing
8. Advantages of Reverse Circulation
Drilling
Direct drilling cost reductions in the range of 25% to
40%.
Faster completion of drill programs with quicker
delivery of results.
Reduced man-hours at the drill with decreased
exposure to potential accidents.
Reduced contractor activity in the mine reduces mine
support burden.
Indirect cost reductions gained from a simplified
sampling process.
Requires less water than diamond drilling.

12. Regular Flush Drill Pipe
The drill string is tapered to
maximize strength and hanging
length by using lighter 5 in.
outside diameter (OD) drill pipe
on bottom to reduce the weight
and stronger 5 in. OD drill pipe
(Fig.)on top where bending
stresses are higher.
13. The flush joint drill pipe is made of extra
heavy duty steel pipe with heat-treated tool
joints. Shrink fit and welded on. Wrench flats
are provided on tool joints. Available in 5, 10,
15, 20 and 25 feet lengths.
