1. Common Induction
Course Description:
Skills for Care is the strategic development body for Adult Social Care workers in England and is
responsible for setting the standards - the Common Induction Standards (CIS) - for people entering
adult social care.
CIS were developed to meet the requirements of the General Social Care Council Code of Practice.
Since October 2006 they have formed the national minimum standard requirements specified by
the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for all new care staff. CIS form the basis for social care staff
registration throughout England and are required to be met within the 12-week induction period
that employers must provide for all new care staff.
CIS are linked to Diplomas (QCF) Health and Social Care Study, and provide preparatory training for
entry into those programmes. CIS will:
• Provide a structured start for new care staff
• Enable care workers to provide high quality care and support
• Provide recognition for care workers in their chosen vocation
• Prepare care workers for entry into Diplomas (QCF) Health and Social Care Study.
You must provide all new care staff with a 12-week induction period incorporating Common
Induction Training in order to meet the national minimum standard requirements for care staff
specified by CQC. Further training courses covering the following Standards in more detail are
