This is a brief presentation about how the BBC created the biggest newsroom in Europe
Hopefully it will prompt plenty of questions for which there will be time at the end
A little bit of history to begin
Back in 2008 we were all in our own Newsrooms on separate floors in a huge building
The News Channel were on the first floor of the News Centre spur
Online were on the 7th floor of TV Centre
TV and Radio bulletins kept themselves to themselves on the first floor
And BBC World News were in a windowless bunker called N9 on the second floor
We reorganised things to create a multimedia newsroom in the News Centre
Radio TV and Online were all brought together but space was an issue and things were spread across 2 floors with a Global / UK split
Even so , we were able to make changes
Departments were re-organised and a single Newsroom department was created
From 4 locations we now had 2
A new meeting regime was introduced where everyone came along and shared information about what they were working on or planning
We organised swaps and training
We created a new Multimedia Editor who looked across all the platforms and make decisions on resources when there were conflicts
All good – but not perfect
Now we are moving into a building big enough for everyone on a single floor – and with room for our World Service English Language colleagues from Bush House
There are 7 floors above ground and 3 below – including the newsroom and this short film gives you an idea of what we’re moving in to (Helicopter film)
The Newsroom is purpose built – double deckers
For the first time we have Global and UK in the same newsroom – and WS English
We have a central intake desk with all the main newsgathering functions
We recently changed our breaking news policies to reflect the need for copy to help all platforms
This is the central news desk I mentioned – the hub
From it radiates the spokes – output teams from web, radio and TV
In more detail – one side of the desk is focusing on Global – the other on home
The key figures who are the first point of contact for stories and control resources are here
New roles will also be on the desk – Monitoring, Live and Social, Live stream
From the news desk radiates the output teams
The News Channel have their studio on the newsroom floor – my desk is behind camera 3
World News have a gallery next to them but their studio is two floors below
Further away from the centre are our On Demand and UGC teams
Surrounding the newsroom are the resources we need to get on air
Radio studios and Edit Suites
Graphics – able to go on TV Or the web – 4 screens
A technical sub hub for ingesting material or getting video from the web
On the floor above – Weather – serving all outlets and viewable by the general public
And Planning – global and domestic side by side
We’re only 50 per cent full
World Service and Online have been in for some time but some of our highest profile programmes have still to make the move
And once we’re all together we look closer at how we can do things differently
We’re working on a more joined up planning operation (details?)
We’re pilot a new role to improve the way we use and share stills
Lots of programmes means lots of guests – how can we make sure they are made available to everyone efficiently
How we handle copy (Jportal / Quickfire) and getting metadata attached to an item and staying with it through the production process
A joint intake team – multiskilled and able to handle audio and video
