Applying Communication Principles to Real Life
Assignment Instructions:
Review the true story described in "Perspectives: A Memorable
Hospital Experience" (Box 1.6). Then match the details from the
story at left with the communication concepts at right. (More
than one may apply.)
Excerpts:
A. "In my short 27 years I have visited hospitals in four states
and only one stands out in my memory."
B. "The doctors at St. Jude stopped and spoke with families and
patients and answered any questions they were asked."
C. "During those first hours of our shock and fear over my
sister's diagnosis, the hospital staff worked quickly on our
paperwork without making us feel the least bit rushed. . . .
They were our new family."
D. "We found Mary, who had gotten off work lJ-1 hours
earlier, reading to my sister. Jackie assisted my sister with
manicuring her nails even though it was not part of her
technical duties. The nurses at St. Jude stepped out of their
textbook roles to accommodate the needs of their parents."

made all the arrangements to get us back home to Louisiana."
F. "We have founded a fundraising chapter for St. Jude in Baton
