4. REACT has a sound leadership structure that
ensures equal representation from each of the

Kenya. Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.
The hosting country is first of all voted on and
we are fortunate to have already been hosted
by Uganda and Burundi. The next country to
host REACT 2016 will be voted for after
conclusion of REACT 2015 Kisumu, Kenya.
The leadership structure for the main REACT
committee consists of a Chairman, Secretary,
Logistics/Treasurer, Public Relations and
Country coordinators who serve for one year.
The country coordinators handle logistics and
mobilization in partnership with partnering
clubs of a given country and/or
Country/District officials.

24. Nyalenda ‘B’ informal Settlement
Following a comprehensive needs assessment by REACT 2015 hosts the
Rotaract Club of Kisumu, they identified the beneficiary community for this
REACT to be “Nyalenda B Informal Settlement in Kenya.

25. REACT 2015 Justification
In Kenya alone, malaria accounts for
20% cause of mortality and more than
30% of all hospital admissions.
Prevention and control strategies to
mitigate this burden has remained a
public health priority.
However, these campaigns have largely
focused on rural populations thus under-
estimating the burden and impact in
informal urban settlements.
REACT 2015 thus aims to sensitize
residents of an informal urban
settlement, Nyalenda B in Kisumu
Kenya, on simple and affordable
practices for the prevention and control
of Malaria.

26. REACT 2015 Activities
REACT 2015 targets 323 individuals of
Nyalenda B community and will be
implemented by project team members
divided in the areas of health education,
distribution of insecticide treated nets,
clearing of bushes and stagnant water.
Improper disposal of waste especially
inorganic (Paper bags/Plastics etc) has led
to clogging of the already poor drainage
systems. The surface of this waste has
created an ideal nesting ground for
Anopheles Mosquitoes hence the malaria
prevalence.
We shall attempt to open drainage and
properly dispose of the waste, cut bushes
coupled with literature on proper waste
disposal, malaria prevention &
control/treatment and Management.
