The Festival was also an opportunity to network with big brands in the country and
strengthen the relationship between Kampala Capital City Authority and InterAid/UNHCR.
This is an important partnership for Urban Refugees as KCCA is their host and governs all
their activities. InterAid was participating for the second time and 2015 marked the first time
but as a silver sponsor, paying Twenty Five Million Uganda Shillings then. The experience
from participating the first time indicated the need to continue participating as a way of
engaging Refugees in this activity and creating awareness and sensitization about their needs
and capacities as well as to bring out the positive image around them for a better reception.

Every 1st October is the International Day for
Older persons. This day was celebrated in
Kabusu at the Community Centre and while

partners came on board to partner for the good

Uganda Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance that provided free
screening for non-communicable diseases, Uganda Protestant Medical
Bureau who providing free eye testing while InterAid paid a subsidised

to ensure that they attend to the many numbers of South Sudanese
Refugees that were seeking refuge at the Kiryandongo settlement that
InterAid manages with other partners under the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees as the main partner. Currently, the
numbers have gone down, to that effect the reception area was closed
and the few that come throw are sent to Yumbe resettlement. Managing
the crisis required hard work and dedication, this and more was what
the InterAid team emulated for successful crisis management during
the period. We continue to pray for peace in South Sudan.
Among the many initiatives to up lift
education standards of schools in
Kampala include; the News Papers in
Education program for the schools
especially public schools where Refugees
are able to access free education. News
Papers in Education is an initiative that ensures learners are able to access
news across the country and the world, learn about developments in their
country and shape their minds on the political, social, economic and
culture developments around them. This is made possible through a
partnership between The Daily Monitor that supplies the Newspapers to
these schools daily, InterAid that meets the costs of having the
Newspapers and Kampala Capital City Authority that authorises the
initiative to happen. So far 60 Schools have benefited, Kitante Primary
being the latest beneficiary of the program. The Director for Education
at KCCA outlined the tremendous improvement of performance among
learners as a result of the knowledge received from the Newspapers.
