Watch and Read about how this 'bright young thing', Stanford-dropout, Steve Jobs-admirer, was able to establish this start-up company, recruiting all kinds of powerful people to be either her investors and/or board members, and then everything fell apart. There are so many different things to discuss, but we will focus on three topics below. Initial/Original Post Please respond to questions below: It was discussed in the CNN article and also briefly mentioned in Erika Cheung's Ted Talk that all kinds of powerful men agreed to invest in the company or be on the board of directors. Some of them defended Holmes vehemently for a very long time even after the suspicion had arisen. Think about what made them so loyal. Why are we (people in general) attracted to fraudsters? Erika Cheung's Ted Talk and the WSJ article on another whistleblower, Tyler Shultz, give us a glimpse of what goes through a whistleblower's mind. Their stories show us that job security and the concern of retaliation from the company are not the only things that can stop potential whistleblowers from acting. Based on what you read and watch, discuss what factors (which I did not discuss here) can affect individuals' decision to become a whistleblower. You can also think of other factors that have not been presented in the video/article. The video 'Dice Experiment' is a snippet of that HBO documentary, 'The Inventor', for which you watched the trailer. While the psychology described by Dan Ariely, a renowned behavioral economist, cannot explain Holmes's action entirely, the result of the experiment is very interesting. Can you think of any other example of people who committed wrongdoings motivated by the reasons Ariely discusses in the video? .

ment, a speech, or a text message — you no doubt subconsciously ana-
lyze the message for a sense of the character and credibility of the
sender: Does this reporter seem biased? Why should I be paying attention to
this speaker? Our culture teaches us to be skeptical of most messages
that bombard us with slogans, and that skepticism is a crucial skill in
reading and evaluating arguments.
The mottoes associated with various sources of global information
aim to “brand” them by helping to establish their character, what
ancient rhetors referred to as ethos. And sometimes, slogans like “Fair
& Balanced,” “All the News That’s Fit to Print,” or “Do No Harm” can be
effective: at the very least, if a phrase is repeated often enough, it
comes to sound natural and right. Maybe CNN is the most trusted name
in news!
But establishing character usually takes more than repetition, as
marketers of all kinds know. In the auto industry American companies

like Ford or GM are trying to reinvent themselves as forward-looking
producers of fuel-efficient cars like the Volt, and they have mounted
huge campaigns aimed at convincing buyers that their ethos has
changed — for the better. Other companies are challenging them:
Toyota’s third-generation Prius has developed a strong reputation, a
“good character” among buyers; the Nissan Leaf—which describes itself
as “100% electric. Zero gas. Zero tailpipe”—was named “world car of the
year” at the New York International Auto Show as well as a “top safety
pick” by the Institute for Highway Safety, thus building an ethos of clean
energy and safety. Tata Motors, whose motto is “We care,” offers the
Nano, the world’s cheapest car whose character, they say, can be
described as “the people’s car.” All of these companies know that their
success in sales will be directly linked to their ability to establish a con-
vincing and powerful ethos for their products.
If corporations can establish an ethos for themselves and their
products, consider how much character matters when we think about
people, especially those in the public eye. We’ll mention only two very
different examples: actor Charlie Sheen and football star Tim Tebow.

Since emergency departments aren't on a first-come, first-serve basis, wait times were often unpredictable and lengthy. Patients are triaged based on their level of acuity. Long Emergency Department (ED) Length of stay (EDLOS) is associated with poor patient outcomes, which has led to the implementation of time targets designed to keep EDLOS below a specific limit. The method conducted for the concept analysis on EDLOS was the Walker and Avant approach. They were able to research a way of measuring the concept empirically by identifying all concepts used. Authors Aim and Purpose
As a former Emergency Department Nurse, I find it fascinating how the author chose to do the concept analysis on this topic. According to the author, when patients are forced to stay for extended lengths of time in the emergency department, this leads to poor patient outcomes, overcrowding, and an overall inefficient organization. The distribution of stresses on a retaining structure due to surcharge loads should be
carefully assessed in design. The design load factors are 1.5 for strength and stability limit
states, and 0.7 for the serviceability limit state. See Table J1 for examples of load
components for each limit state.
J10.3 Assessment of the effect of surcharge for conventional retaining structures
Each pressure induced by surcharge loads will depend on the load spreading properties of
the retained earth and the stiffness of the wall. Two approaches may be used to assess the
magnitude and distribution of lateral pressures induced by surcharge loading, as follows:
(a) Rankine active earth pressure theory—the trial wedge method and associated force
polygon methods may be employed (see Figure J6).

Numerical modelling approaches (finite element analysis) may be used to assess the

For reinforced soil-retaining structures, the internal stresses are derived from two separate
load conditions, resulting from—
(a) the supporting function, and

Abstract: Many scholars believe that linear perspective existed in classical antiquity, but a fresh
examination of two key texts in Vitruvius shows that 1.2.2 is about modularity and symmetria,
while 7.Pr.11 describes shading (skiagraphia). Moreover, these new interpretations are firmly based on
the classical understanding of optics and the history of painting (e.g., Pliny the Elder). A third text
(Philostratus, Imagines 1.4.2) suggests that the design of Roman wall painting depends on concentric
circles. Philostratus’ system is then used to successfully make facsimiles of five walls, representing
Styles II, III, and IV of Roman wall painting. Hence, linear perspective and its relatives, such as
Panofsky’s vanishing vertical axis, should not be imposed retrospectively where they never existed.

Two systems for designing Pompeian wall paintings have dominated modern scholarship: a
one- or center-point perspective and a vanishing vertical axis.1 Neither method works for all the
variations seen on the walls of Styles II–IV. The vanishing vertical axis is considered a precursor of
linear perspective, whereas center-point construction is a form of linear perspective. Many scholars
believe that linear perspective was invented by the Greeks, only to be forgotten during the Middle
Ages and “reinvented” in the Renaissance.2 In contrast, I propose that linear perspective was not
known in any form in antiquity but, rather, was an invention of the Renaissance, which also created its
putative ancient pedigree.
1. Background
1.1. Definitions
First, it is important to define four key terms.
“Perspective” applies loosely to a wide range of systems that convert a three-dimensional scene
to two dimensions. Most scholars, however, mean “linear perspective” when they use the unqualified
term “perspective”. No standard definition exists for linear perspective, but only linear perspective
obeys the rules of projective geometry. Formal definitions refer to “station points” (the point or
place for the “eye” of the “viewer” and/or “artist”), vanishing points, horizon lines, and picture
planes, among other aspects. Horizontal lines converge to the “center point” or, in the case of

In “Parents Keep Child’s Gender Secret”, Jayme Poisson writes an article about the true story of a Canadian couple raising their child without ever revealing the child’s gender (keeping it secret from anyone not in their immediate family). Poisson’s piece allows us to form our own opinions about this subject and forces us to examine why we consider gender so important to the development of a child.
Kenji Yoshino writes about the term covering. ‘Covering’, as Yoshino uses it, means to ‘tone down a disfavored identity to fit into the mainstream’ (552), and Yoshino argues that though Americans value the idea of the melting pot as a model for our culture, that ideal can have unintended negative consequences. Despite our avowed appreciation for multiculturalism, the unstated public expectation is still for people of all genders, sexual orientations and races to conform to rigid expectations.

Abstract: Many scholars believe that linear perspective existed in classical antiquity, but a fresh
examination of two key texts in Vitruvius shows that 1.2.2 is about modularity and symmetria,
while 7.Pr.11 describes shading (skiagraphia). Moreover, these new interpretations are firmly based on
the classical understanding of optics and the history of painting (e.g., Pliny the Elder). A third text
(Philostratus, Imagines 1.4.2) suggests that the design of Roman wall painting depends on concentric
circles. Philostratus’ system is then used to successfully make facsimiles of five walls, representing
Styles II, III, and IV of Roman wall painting. Hence, linear perspective and its relatives, such as
Panofsky’s vanishing vertical axis, should not be imposed retrospectively where they never existed.

Two systems for designing Pompeian wall paintings have dominated modern scholarship: a
one- or center-point perspective and a vanishing vertical axis.1 Neither method works for all the
variations seen on the walls of Styles II–IV. The vanishing vertical axis is considered a precursor of
linear perspective, whereas center-point construction is a form of linear perspective. Many scholars
believe that linear perspective was invented by the Greeks, only to be forgotten during the Middle
Ages and “reinvented” in the Renaissance.2 In contrast, I propose that linear perspective was not
known in any form in antiquity but, rather, was an invention of the Renaissance, which also created its
putative ancient pedigree.
1. Background
1.1. Definitions
First, it is important to define four key terms.
“Perspective” applies loosely to a wide range of systems that convert a three-dimensional scene
to two dimensions. Most scholars, however, mean “linear perspective” when they use the unqualified
term “perspective”. No standard definition exists for linear perspective, but only linear perspective
obeys the rules of projective geometry. Formal definitions refer to “station points” (the point or
place for the “eye” of the “viewer” and/or “artist”), vanishing points, horizon lines, and picture
planes, among other aspects. Horizontal lines converge to the “center point” or, in the case of

This study aimed to characterize workplace violence experienced by healthcare workers at a public hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. A qualitative survey was conducted through interviews with 6 workers, and a quantitative survey was distributed to 32 workers. The main findings were that 41 incidents of physical or verbal violence over the past 2 years were reported, with the majority perpetrated by patients or their family members. Most victims reported permanent feelings of hypervigilance after experiencing violence. Many workers were unfamiliar with reporting procedures or felt reporting was useless. There are so many different things to discuss, but we will focus on three topics below. Initial/Original Post Please respond to questions below: It was discussed in the CNN article and also briefly mentioned in Erika Cheung's Ted Talk that all kinds of powerful men agreed to invest in the company or be on the board of directors. Some of them defended Holmes vehemently for a very long time even after the suspicion had arisen. Think about what made them so loyal. Why are we (people in general) attracted to fraudsters? Erika Cheung's Ted Talk and the WSJ article on another whistleblower, Tyler Shultz, give us a glimpse of what goes through a whistleblower's mind. Their stories show us that job security and the concern of retaliation from the company are not the only things that can stop potential whistleblowers from acting. Based on what you read and watch, discuss what factors (which I did not discuss here) can affect individuals' decision to become a whistleblower. You can also think of other factors that have not been presented in the video/article. The video 'Dice Experiment' is a snippet of that HBO documentary, 'The Inventor', for which you watched the trailer. While the psychology described by Dan Ariely, a renowned behavioral economist, cannot explain Holmes's action entirely, the result of the experiment is very interesting. Can you think of any other example of people who committed wrongdoings motivated by the reasons Ariely discusses in the video?
