The play that I went to see was Beautiful: The Carol King Musical. I attended opening night of this
play on Tuesday, February 21st of this year. This musical is about the true and remarkable story of
her uprising career. Carol started off as a song writer when she was only a teen writing with her
future husband, Gerry Goffin. The play is about an extraordinary person who battles everyday
issues, but ultimately overcomes the odds and adversities thrown at her. With her talent in music and
singing; Carol King went on to have one of the most successful solo acts in music history. King's
story is truly inspiring and this play attributes to her legacy not just as an artist but also a person.
The play's genre is musical theatre because singing and dancing are essential parts of the play. The
director's purpose of this play was to tell in great detail the life of American artist Carol King.
The play was performed at the lovely Peace Center. The Peace Center, which is a great fine arts
theatre in downtown Greenville. Has a stage that is known as a Proscenium stage with large curtains
from floor to ceiling. The sets varied from an office setting with a piano that was where Carol and

reading in a jazz club in Chicago. Mac made up a gimmick to bring life to his open–mic formal; his
idea was to match up poets against each other as in a fight. It was in 1986 when slam poetry was

I thought that Kerouac's musical tone of voice accompanying the music playing really gave the
experience of listening to a song rather than a poetry performance. It had a nice flow to the
performance that added to the songlike feel to this performance when listening to it. I especially
heard this tone in lines, such as "we blop and we plop". The use of sound imagery helps in relating
the songlike feel to poetry to the actual musician who is at the center of the poem's content and
meaning. This is not the only imagery seen in the poem, as there are multiple points in the poem.
Kerouac uses imagery as a way to immerse in the poem to give the reader mental images about
Charlie Parker. This can be seen at the beginning of the poem when Kerouac is describing Charlie
Parker, such as the line "Charlie Parker looked like Buddha." Kerouac also used imagery to describe
the music of Charlie Parker as well. Kerouac describes the experience of listening to Charlie Parker
play in lines such as "like the perfect cry of some wild gang at a jam session Wail! Whap!". This
type of imagery gives the feeling of being at one of the great musician's performances. This poetry

In Betty Keller's Tea Party, Alma, a seventy–five year old woman, and Hester Evans, a seventy–nine
year old woman are sisters that share a home together. In their old age and due to Hester being a
cripple, the Evans sisters are confined to their home almost all the time. The small amount of
excitement they do get, is from the neighborhood paperboy that they occasionally get to speak to. It
is made quite obvious at the beginning of the drama, that the two women are starved of attention
and company, it is made so obvious by their eagerness and restlessness about the fact that the
paperboy will be arriving soon. While Alama watches the boy make his way down the street the two
try to decide what story they tell the young lad when he arrives at their porch. While throwing out
ideas they argue about the details about the story and whether the story is appropriate for the young
man to hear. Unfortunately the paperboy must not have time for the old timers stories because as he
passes he throws the paper on the porch and continues on without checking with the Evans sisters
for collecting outgoing bills. So the Evans sisters are forced to wait for their next opportunity for

Cultural imperialism, in a form of New York's World Expo in 1964, stands on the background of this
part of the story. A young Javanese dancer, Sardono W. Kusumo was a member of the Indonesian

Although millions of people listen to music everyday, many people never take notice of how many
genres exist throughout the world. Two genres that take popular notice in the music industry, that
may be considered as "opposite sides of the coin", the genres can easily be compared and
contrasted, no matter which compare or contrast side is favored. The Broadway genre, which is
notably alongside musical theatrics, or simply theatrics in general, is not only for the sophisticated
population in it's essence, but is even favored by adolescents of all ages. Due to the variety of
musicals that have been created throughout the past one hundred years, there is a musical for any
type of person, no matter how much or how little they favor the Broadway genre. The rap genre,
however, can seem extremely different from most genres of music. Nevertheless, if a person finds
an area of the rap genre that comes to their own liking, they may come to the realization that not all
of it is the same, which can be true. Typically, rap, which stands for "rhythm and poetry", has a fast

Spring Choral Concert One the afternoon of Sunday, 03 May, 2015, I was watched a performance of
the North Dakota State University Spring Choral Concert Festival Concert Hall at North Dakota
State University. The NDSU Concert Choir has a distinguished tradition of performing eminent
choral literature at the highest level of artistry. When I was went to the concert, I sat in the middle of

African-Caribbean Concert Report
Last week, I went to an African–Caribbean Concert located in Lee Hall Auditorium at Florida A&M
University. There were so many great performances starting with little girls dancing to African
music and ending with people dancing to the beat of drums. There was a total of ten performances at
the concert and I liked that there was a variety of ways to showcase the talents. Instead of only
dancing, there was poetry, and singing. Out of the ten performances, there were three that really had
my attention throughout the whole performance. These three performances were Excellence Funga

The Langston Hughes Project Ask Your Mama:12 Moods for Jazz filled Sursa Hall on Wednesday,
February 17, 2016. Around 7:30 p.m. the show started with three spoken word poets. These poets
set the tone for the night, which was story telling through poetry and song. Throughout the whole
twelve moods of jazz, a story was told. Throughout the concert, the crowd got to experience a
variety of feelings. A fast tempo usually resulted in a fun upbeat feel, while a slow tempo usually
left the audience with a more relaxed or even sad feel. The Ron McCurdy Quartet and the Ball State
Symphony Orchestra left the audience in awe at the end of the night. Around 8:00 p.m. the crowd

We all enjoyed snapping along with McCurdy and the beat. The flute and violin created a beautiful
harmony. Mood 10: Bird in Orbit had a violent and explosive beat. The bass and drums were more
pronounced in this set. The tempo was up and this mood was very loud.
Mood 11: Jazztet Muted had a fast tempo that created a dynamic feel. The flute would call and the
drums would respond. The use of call and respond made the piece feel very well put together. This
mood mainly focused on a smooth piano solo and a flute solo. Mood 12: Show Fare, Please was the
last mood for the night. The rhythm section maintained a steady tempo. The audience, including
myself, enjoyed clapping along with the beat. Ron McCurdy plays the trumpet wonderfully along
with the orchestra in this energetic and happy tune. Yet another compelling trumpet solo to finish off
the concert wonderfully.
Ultimately, the performance of The Langston Hughes Project Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz
successfully told the story of struggling blacks in the 1960s. The Ron McCurdy Quartet, the Spoken
Word Poets, and the Ball State Symphony Orchestra made the show very enjoyable for the crowd.
The audience was told a story, but the jazz music made them feel it. I thoroughly enjoyed this
concert, and I left with more of an appreciation for

My Career Path
There are many career paths to be taken when trying to decide what would best suit my skillset, but
when you know your personality type it narrows those multitude of career paths down to what most
others with your personality would be successful at in the job world. The personality I was listed as
is an ESFP, people who have my personality typically go into the entertainment franchise. Seeing as
how I have always wanted to be a musician and write music I have chosen my career path as a
performer. I chose this path because I am at my happiest when I am writing music and it is very
challenging to be successful as a performer which encourages me to keep writing so that one day I

Ballet played an enormous role in this beautiful artistic story of The Swan, for the very simple
reason that every movement and every gesture signifies a different experience for someone who is
opening up your mind, and eyes that they're attempting to escape death. The ballet is not about a

As a last ditch effort to be more outgoing in high school, I decided to go to the black history

student led interest meeting we're we all thought of what we wanted to do. I thought for a few
minutes to see what I would feel comfortable doing. Since the only place I felt comfortable at school
was in my poetry class. I decided to do poetry since that is one of the few things that I felt like I was
good at, poetry at the time gave me a since of security and taught me how to be confident in my own

Beltway Poetry Slam Analysis
I attended the Beltway Poetry Slam which was held at the Busboys and Poets in Brookland NE.
During the poetry slam, I silently took notes in the back of the room and I made sure I was not
interrupting the scenery.
Before walking in, I didn't know what to expect. I choose to go to the Beltway Poetry Slam, because
I would have the opportunity to hear and feel the poets' raw emotions. Before walking in, I thought
the poetry slam would have more of a competitive aspect.
There was very little competition and the poets didn't try to rebut or argue back. This experience
helped dispel some of my preconceived notions about how poetry slams work. I thought all poetry
slams are hyper–competitive and but the poets who performed seemed as though they enjoyed being
on stage and they didn't seemed stressed.
During my time at Beltway Poetry Slam, I realized there were several common trends. All of the
poets were Black/African American and they brought up the negative problems pertaining to the
community such as abuse, rape, police brutality, violence, black women struggles, etc; essentially

I Attended University Dance Theatre
I attended University Dance Theatre over the weekend, and after just recently becoming interested
in dance and appreciating dance as an art form I was excited to watch a live dance performance.
There were a total of nine dances, each of which, were choreographed by different people. Not
surprisingly, every dance was extremely different, and left the audience feeling different emotions.
It was hard picking two dances that I enjoyed the most because they were all fantastic. I picked two
that were simple, in the sense that anyone could determine the reason behind the dance. The first is
powerful, and the second is humorous. It was interesting breaking down the dances, determining the
choreographic and theatrical elements, and concluding the meaning of the dance – if any. My
expectations were high going in, and I was not disappointed. Beginning with the powerful dance in
the first–half – Still?. Still? was preformed by two African American women. I found this dance
interesting because the music was spoken text by Martin Luther King, Jr. in the beginning and
towards the end was poetry that was spoken with strong emotion. The stage lighting was turned
down, almost completely dark, and the two women had dark clothing, which, indicated sorrow,
frustration, and anger almost. The dancers only used a small portion of the stage with no props and a
completely bare stage – the focus was directed to the two dancers.

On Thursday, April 21, 2016, I attended a concert of the MGA Chamber Singers, along with about
fifty to seventy–five other attendees. The 27 members of the MGA Chamber Singers, along with
director Rebecca Lanning and pianists Gail Pollock and Tom Rule presented their musical ensemble
at 7:30 P.M. in the Arts Complex Rehearsal Hall on the Macon Campus of Middle Georgia State

The World Music and Dance Concert series this year was diverse in their expression of the different

Not many 10 year olds are introduced to slam poetry. Fortunately for me , I wasn't one of those 10
year olds who lacked that experience. After performing at a show on South Street, my cousin
suggested that I perform at a slam in West Philly that was strictly for the youth. It was called Philly
Youth Night.The only place in the city where Philadelphia youth can share their voices in the city. I

On September 10th, I had the pleasure of attending the Shapiro and Smith Dance. The performance
was a series of different dance numbers that used different elements of sound and movements to
promote their ideas. The first dance was called "Dance with Two Army Blankets." The dance used
old army blankets as props to throw the dancers around the stage. Often, the blankets were used to
throw these dancers away from other people who they were trying to reach, as if their experiences
with war made it difficult for them to connect with others. This danced was followed by "Jack," a
dance between two men and played around with all the fairy tales and rhymes that were about men

The dancers in "Jack" had used pre recorded poetry while the two ladies of "Pat A Cake" relied only
on what sounds they could make through stomping, clapping, snapping, as well as their own words.
They had no other sound other than what they could create. This created an almost intimate

tragic play about defiance, law, death and love (B. Honig, Antigone Interrupted, 2013, pg. 6). These
elements make Antigone one of the most tragic plays in Ancient Greek Theatre as multiple deaths of
main characters occur within the traditional texts. In order to convey these elements the chorus had
a vital role in the process of the play. In 'Antigone', the chorus at times would directly affect the
action on. The chorus would interact with the actors on stage physically, and through text which
aloud a personal link and connection with the audience on stage (R. Shoutez, The Function of The
Chorus, 2010). Artistic Director, Howard Jenson from The Indiana University states: "In Classical
Greek plays, the chorus IS the main character." (H. Jenson, Artistic Director, Indiana University –
Directing Greek Theatre, 2011) which supports the statement of the importance of the chorus within
Ancient Greek

The Performance Of The Performing Arts
The performing arts give and enhance many traits in a person's life. Students involved in theater
prepares students for later–in–life experiences. Participation also makes people feel a certain
belonging to society. Students learn new skills: increased intelligence, and the ability to connect and
read others' emotions. Participation in the performing arts gives people experience, the feeling of
belonging, and new skills. Firstly, students participating in theater gain experiences for later careers.
For example, someone who understands an audition would know what to expect in a job or college
interview. Assisting in a performance, even on the technical side, can also improve the ability to
withstand stress and being put in a position under pressure (Mintz). This also expands one's capacity
for thinking and knowledge about the performing arts and gives students a greater appreciation for
the arts. They gain new abilities and endure more of the hardships in their lives. Problem solving is
a definite trait gained for the teamwork and leadership roles many must take on in productions. This
prepares them for their career and the hardships and pressure they must endure. Some people even
view the performing arts as transcendent experience, giving them a new way to look at life as a
whole, making it a spiritual experience. Also performing enhances one's speaking ability, or public
speaking. This is extremely useful later in life when, for example, one has to give a
