Convection Lab
EQ: Explain how energy from the sun causes clouds and sea breezes
Standard: HCPS III 8.8.6 Forces that Shape the Earth Explain the relationship between
density and convection currents in the ocean and atmosphere
7. Procedure
1. Position the Candle in the
plastic bin so it’s under the big
hole of the metal lid.
2. Connect tubing to smaller hole.
3. Place ice pack next to the
smaller hole.
4. Light the candle.
5. Place incense on foil and light
it.
6. Put funnel over incense to send
smoke into the bin.
9. Discussion
1. In the evening, right after the sunsets, which direction will
convection send the air? Explain.
2. How does convection lead to the formation of clouds?
Editor's Notes
Discuss with elbow partners
At the beginning of the day, which is warmer, the sand or the water? Explain why. (Use the terms differential heating and radiant energy.)

If there are two different air temperatures from the candle and the ice,
Then the smoke will move counter-clock wise, rise above the candle, then fall below the ice,
Because hot air rises and air moves from higher pressure to lower pressure.
